Congrats to Ovie! Now 3rd all time in goals scored with 767! Beautiful goal to boot. :)

As well, he passes Brett Hull for 23rd all time in points scored with 1392. He also now only needs 3 points to become the highest scoring LW of all time.

Also, Ovie only needs 7 more shots on net for 6,000 in his career.

The Legend continues to grow. :)

Geez, 767. What a moment.

Let's all enjoy this. God forbid if Ovechkin slumps or breaks his leg or something, and never gets to 801/2, but if something does happen and he had to quit suddenly, this is an absolutely incredible thing. To score that many goals in this era, with his (younger, esp.) physical style, this consistently... it's just staggering.

As many others have noted, almost as much as the goal scoring it's the longevity and health-retention that's almost the most amazing thing.

Ovechkin needs to donate his body to science before he dies so researchers can figure out how he did it.

(Great message there from Jagr, too!)

I don't usually get rosy-philosophical about hockey culture (which has taken some hits, recently, and deservedly so), but can I just say that it is very nice IN NHL PRO-HOCKEY that past greats almost always acknowledge and sincerely celebrate current greats as records are matched and broken. And current greats show respect for past greats.

This is in contrast to some other pro-sports... Let's pause to remember Barry Bonds' comments to the media like,"Y'all can forget Babe Ruth now!".

Agreed. 😜

God forbid if Ovechkin slumps or breaks his leg or something, and never gets to 894/5, but if something does happen and he had to quit suddenly, this is an absolutely incredible thing. To score that many goals in this era, with his (younger, esp.) physical style, this consistently... it's just staggering.

Well, that's still a ways away. One step at a time.

I think my point is: People need to appreciate being 3rd all time in goals. Forget 2nd and 1st, at the moment. Just appreciate Ovechkin's being 3rd, which is crazy.

He doesnt play D or do anything else other than wait for PP opportunities. Makes its easy to avoid injuries.

Ovechkin has led the league in even strength goals five seasons including 2019-20. He is fourth this year, the active leader in total, and if you remove all of his PP goals he'd still be approaching 500 goals. Since 2015-16 his ranks are: 1, 2, 3, 1, 4 but go off on the narrative from like 2014 that he's a PP specialist. And of course he won two MVPs before Adam Oates moved him on the PP unleashing him.

4th all-time with 483 ES goals. Likely to finish 2nd (55 back from Jagr, 83 back from Howe, and 134 back from Gretzky).

no nerding out at all. lol That is interesting though. What is the record and by whom?

Joe Thornton is currently the all-time leader in PP minutes (5,974), and Ovechkin is right behind at 5,964. Not only will Ovechkin get this "record" in a few more games, he'll likely become the first player in NHL history to (officially) reach 6,000 minutes.

(I'm certain that a few players actually have more than 6,000 minutes on the powerplay - Bourque and Coffey being the most likely - but it's only officially been tracked since 1997-98).

It's quite telling to see that every twitter post on his quest for the goal record, is filled with negative comments toward this guy.
He will end up the Big Pappi of Hockey. Loved by a fan base, hated by the rest of the world.

The majority of hockey fans are fans of Ovechkin and think he's unreal, Twitter is not a real place

Needs 13 goals in his last 21 games to hit 50.

Gonna be close.

Well you know that he will get the ice time and SOG opportunities to do it but it doesn't matter either way if he makes it or not, his legacy has already been established among the all time greats and it's extremely unlikely to change.

Rangers fans hate the Caps and many hate Ovie… I adore the guy. Exciting player to watch, still thrills often, even if not as regularly as when he was young and the exuberant personality and sense of humor to go with his uniquely physical goal scoring ability… guy is a legend.

To be fair to Barry Bonds the Ruth all time record had an ugly American cultural history around it and Bonds was an easy target for the media to hate.

Hockey greats, generally speaking do seem to be more humble than other major sports greats but that isn't really a big deal to most people anyways.

It’s just absurd to think that what he’s doing is not adding to his legacy. The milestones keep adding up whether you want them to or not.

The point being that he is the greatest goal scorer of all time and if person A has him as the 11th best forward of all time for example, getting 50 or 48 this season isn't really going to push the needle is it?

Even for the small contingent that are really goals focused, they already have Ovi up in the top 10 close to #5, he isn't breaking into Mario territory is he?

It's even debatable if he is a better forward than Jagr at this point all time, although it's an interesting discussion to have.

Also let's not forget what legacy means either and I'll leave it at that.

I feel the same way about King Henrik. I have never been a Rangers fan but I always liked and respected him. He is a legend and all class. The same goes for the Bruins and Ray Bourque.

"SOG Opportunities"?? That's one I haven't heard from you (other than complaining that he takes TOO many shots)

Ovechkin:
a) Has one of the most dangerous shots in NHL history (from essentially anywhere within the blue-line)
b) Is one of the best players in NHL history at generating shots
