Anyone who says "Yeah well Gretzky's still way better" is missing the point. You shouldn't have to say that, because it's understood. If Ovechkin does this, doesn't make him better than Gretzky. Having to point that out reeks of insecurity. Gretzky was the most complete player ever. It's ok if OV was the better scorer. I believe he already is, would like to see him make if official, though.

Why all the negativity and downplaying of Ovechkin achievements? I swear, Ovi closing in on Gretzky is too much for some people to handle.

The part in bold is the type of post that is probably what drives what you call "negativity and downplaying of Ovechkin's accomplishments
You as well, there was no question in my post. I was responding to another comment about Gretzky being very productive until late in his career. Both he and Ovechkin are.

My original point being, the idea that Ovechkin is just hanging around for the record is ludicrous. Hes still a very good NHL player.
He is most likely going to hang around to break the record but if you actually watched him play this season the term very good NHL player isn't an accurate description.

The fact is that almost every 38 year old in NHL history wasn't a very good NHL player at that point of their career and even more so for forwards.

Sure but why wouldn't he with that PP TOI, offensive zone starts ect and if you watch him play he literally is a floater out there and not even an option to pass to to gain the zone on the PP.

Let's take your note under your name here "

Objective and Neutral Hockey Commentator" and watch the games he is in with no knolwoledge of who th e actual players are, ie zero biaes and one would conclude why is that guy wearing #8 getting so much PP TOI and what exactly is he doing out there so much?

But again this thread isn't for that it's about the goals race so let's stop pretending about him being a very good NHL player at this point because pretending is being generous.

I am pulling for him, but it feels like it will be very close—either way, he is still the greatest goalscorer of all time. He likely needs another 3 seasons to do it with decent production and will likely need to be carried a little or become a powerplay specialist eventually as well.

No, it haters attempting to rationalize how a player who sucks can lead the Caps in points.
I mean any Joe Schmoe can lead an NHL team in scoring, just give them PP time!
Give Nic Dowd top PP minutes, instant all-star!! It's that simple!!:sarcasm::laugh:

Ovechkin can't drive a line by himself anymore, nor is he innately worth his contract, but he's still a very productive player.

We are going to agree to disagree here and often when someone contextualizes something statements like the one you make here get thrown out for what purpose exactly?

Now you are being a hater...that's the ridiculous bar here.

Ive seen you post so much against Ovechkin and rationalize your poor take over and over. Now into semantics of what a good hockey player is?? Thats where you draw the line in the Ovechkin milestone thread?

Were you just waiting for someone to say something nice about him not directly related to chasing Gretzkys record and then you got your chance??? Bahahahahahaha

No, if scoring was so easy you'd see teams slash payroll and give mediocre players minutes. Scoring is that simple!! Teams would load up on the back-end instead.
Nobodies like Ovechkin = instant scoring leaders! Just give em minutes and PP time!
