Ovechkin has been on the ice for 96% of the Caps power play time this season. That's insane. Lol. I wouldn't even think it would be possible.

It's been a common thing for him for a lot of years now and also shelters the fact that he simply hasn't really been close to the player he was in his young peak years but GOALS.

He's already undoubtedly a top 10 player in NHL history. Another cup for sure puts him in the top 5 imo. And he may not need another cup if he surpasses 99's goal totals.

Orr
Gretzky
Lemieux
Ovi
Howe
Hasek
Messier
Crosby
Richard
Beliveau

A few thoughts, pretty much all of them controversial..

How can you put up a list like that without including Bobby Hull, probably a better goal scorer (the real GOAT) than Ovechkin. If he didn't spend such a chunk of his career in the WHA, Ovechkin may be chasing both him and Gretzky.

And if your list is in order, I applaud you big time for putting Orr at number one (so many people are seduced by Gretzky's numbers and put him ahead of Orr... big mistake). But putting Ovechkin ahead of Howe or Crosby (or even Hull) is just wrong. Hull wasn't a one-trick pony like Ovechkin... Hull scored in a variety of ways/methods. Better skater as well.

... and I would put a separate list for goaltenders. Their position is too different to accurately compare to skaters.

Speaking of Hull, it seems that his past has caught up to him, and in the light of Chicago's horrible inactions of the past and purging of late, he has been "cancelled" as ambassador. Will Ovechkin's legacy also be tarnished if he doesn't go back to the podium, take accountability of his previous Putin support, and publicly disown any allegiance to the war monging megalomaniac?

OK This is the thread , with a sticky first post ( which means that the OP is on top of every new page )

In the Title it's saying no politics AND in the Op there's a general warning not to talk about OV political view ... the same warning who is in top of every new pages ( again ).

I think it's pretty clear , then why are the mods have to keep coming in this thread all the time to clean it ?

And yet, through some strange witchcraft, at his most advanced age yet, he is tied for second in even strength goals, fourth in even strength points and has an even distribution between goals and assists while sitting something like fifth in the league in scoring. But all those PP points are really sheltering how bad he actually is overall.

Why it's insane? Most of times, it's first unit of PP that scores.
Because he's been out there for 96% of the total PP time! How can you not see that that is crazy? I can't imagine anyone else is even close to that high in the NHL, even defensemen.

Let's talk about Ovechking without talking about the one thing everything is talking about. Go!

Will they boo Ovechking tonight @ Philly? I mean I couldn't think a reason they would, but will they?
It would be much more fair if Flyers booo their own players for this poor season

There is not a good case to be made that Hull was a better goal scorer. Ovechkin compares equally or more favorably to today's exponentially more talented NHL than Hull compared to the old NHL where 96% of the talent was from one small country.

Hull chose to play in a lesser league, and that's his problem. The fact that he didn't want to compete at the highest level is a mark against his career. How much credit would you be giving Ovechkin had he gone to the KHL 3.5 years ago?

Hull wasn't a one-trick pony like Ovechkin...

One trick ponies do not lead their era in points, while leading it in goals by 52%, while being top 10 in assists, while also being top 3 or 4 in hits.

Your post is blatantly dishonest, and probably better suited for the history forum where lies and distortions are applauded and defended by a small gaggle of people who have some sort of collective motive to do so.

He got off to a majorly unsustainable but amazing start (especially in the assist category) and he's now been under a point per game since well before Christmas with half of his goals into an empty net. Don't be surprised if he doesn't return to that level for the rest of the season.

One small country and an extremely small league of six.

Certainly, but he’s also known to finish strong every year and he’s 36. People really like to detract from the overall offensive force he has been for a LONG time by pretending his exclusively a power play producer, and has been forever. While he certainly puts the meaning into “man advantage”, he is far from the one trick PP specialist people want to paint him as. Instead of being happy that we got to see one of the GOATs (this goes for all of them) people always want to find reasons to belittle their greatness (it’s happening with McDavid, Brady, etc. not just Ovie).

One small country that still today produces more NHL'ers than any other country.

Another thing I don't like is how his team is helping him beat the record. He leads the league in ENG with 7 despite being pretty bad defensively and not used on the PK in other situations.

Gretzky has more ENG but was famously on the PK and scored 73 shorthanded goals compared to Ovechkin's 5.

I cheer for the guy scoring despite being outnumbered and not the guy being helped to score on an almost defenseless opponent.

Even to this day it is staggering to go back and look at the records Gretz holds. Just on a different tier than any other player in history in so many categories.

Alot of those guys were dummies couldn't carve like they can these days
With the red line on, even today players would find the ice smaller..... add to that the sherwood culture, systemic hooking, and big boys like Scott Stevens waiting in the neutral zone or at NJ blue line and I can tell you, boys would not do as fancy plays as today!!!!

Lemieux missed 22 games with cancer.

The other games he missed were primarily due to a bad back, and many were simply due to him being a quitter. Clearly, durability was a huge weakness for Lemieux.

Quitting is an obvious weakness. Poor leadership was also a huge weakness for Lemieux - one that Jagr inherited. You realize that the Pens traded away a hall of fame defenseman at the beginning of his prime (Zubov) for a washed-up player in return, all because Mario was pissed that Zubov didn't pass him the puck enough on the power play, right?
no! he was traded because he would not shoot. we don't need another msnbc.

Indeed, approximately 42% and falling, as opposed to 96%+ in Hull's day, and that small country has doubled in size since Hull's time in the NHL.

So yeah, Ovechkin is facing far superior competition, while stacking up against said competition equally or better.

There is no rational basis for Hull over Ovechkin.

I hope he doesn't break the record. He's too one-dimensionally offensive, likes shooting too much. Gretzky scored the most while simulataneously having more assists than any other players has points, I'd like this record to be held by the more complete player.
I think it is insane that Gretzky leads NHL in all time goals but no one ever mentions him when it comes to goal scoring. Which is fine, he was a better playmaker than scorer.

Nope, if it isn't there already, it is not going to be. He needs more MVP/Lindsay worthy seasons on his resume.

The point = over your head
