I can see him playing up to 42.

These are worst case totals .

Age
36: 10 more goals this year
37: 35 goals
38: 30 goals
39: 30 goals
40: 20 goals

if he falls short of this totals at any age he will come on for a 41, and possibly a 42 year old season to break the record, but he likely gets more than those totals.

tldr, Ovi is going to break the record.

I can see a league minimum contract for a few mins a night in a PP specialist role even at 50. The record is inevitable at this point and more about when, not if. People acting like a 40 year old OV is gonna retire 20-30 goals shy of one of the most prestigious records in sports is silly.

I really hope it doesn't come to that for him to break the record.

Probably a stupid question, but could an invasion of Ukraine have implications for Ovy catching Gretzky? Something like visas for Russians being pulled by NATO or North American countries?

That would be an extremely drastic measure. If you pull the visas of Russian citizens living in NATO countries, you’re basically starting WW3.

We don’t know if Ovi doesn’t have the American citizenship by now. Malkin is a US citizen, Ovechkin might be as well after 17 years of residing in DC.

This is not a thread to discuss Ovechkin's political positions. This is your warning.
Is there a zero Russia-talk policy on the boards right now? I can't find any thread or sticky regarding the rules on this subject. Genuinely curious not trying to be an asshole.

4) Threadjacking/OT/Politics: Posts that waste space or time on the site, annoy users due to characteristics or repetition, disrupt the site functionality, or cause threads to veer off topic may be considered “threadjacking/OT”. This also applies to signatures, user titles, avatars, profile fields, and so forth. Stay on topic as much as possible. Post new threads in the appropriate forum only. Political discussion is not permitted on the forums except within the narrowly defined scope of hockey-related matters.

Rules are pretty clear on that.

They are, and that's unfortunate because there are things that ought to be said.

Quite hot topic though, also hockey-related. Plenty on russians star players in the league and this isn't going to be something that's just going to go away fast. What happens if some player or players openly support these war actions? How fans are reacting? Are teams forced to do something? It can be a hard topic not to discuss this in hockey forum.

If something related to hockey happens, we will see.

Until then, it's a non-negotiable no because people have shown they are unable to discuss it within the rules.

Regarding Ovie, he’s only few goals from Jagr but I hope he won’t get it this year. I like Jagr more.

Yeah you missed the part where you asserted that Ovie can't be part of a big 5 because that would indicate 5 players were all on the same level, except nobody else is on Wayne's level, so you kinda made no sense there.

Anyway, there is no "big 4" because Lemieux and Orr are massively overrated and have no business being put on a level with Gretzky. They both have massive gaping weaknesses on their resumes. Not so for Howe and Gretzky.

This is absurd. Look at the list of points per game all time and tell me "Lemieux is massively overrated." He's the only one that lives in the universe with Gretzky, with a massive drop below.

I hope he doesn't break the record. He's too one-dimensionally offensive, likes shooting too much. Gretzky scored the most while simulataneously having more assists than any other players has points, I'd like this record to be held by the more complete player.

If Lemieux is on Gretzky's level, then Kucherov is on Crosby's level. (Kucherov's peak season is equal or greater than Crosby's).

But they aren't, and the thing that separates them is longevity.

Lemieux has 3 MVPs to Gretzky's 9. It's not even close.
