I sincerely don't understand your objection. This isn't a generic goal-scoring thread. It's a thread dedicated to one thing: Alex Ovechkin's pursuit of the all-time scoring record. It's been tracking the story of Ovi's progress from about 750 goals to the celebration as he passes 800.

I agree – we're witnessing history. IMO, the point of this thread is to pay tribute to it.
I do see your point, but it's an all encompassing milestone thread that's been happening for years (this thread specifically has been active for about a year) recognizing all sorts of milestones. The first page is counting down to breaking Howe's record for most goals by a single franchise.

The subject of this thread changes with each new milestone.

I feel like 800 goals is significant enough to warrent isolation. Especially for posterity. If someone wants to look for this read years from now to see the reaction to Ovi scoring 800 they couldn't even find it.

Okay so... Ovy's probably gonna score 50 again, or close to it. It seems like he could play into his 40s.

At what point does 1000 become realistic?

If he finishes this and next year with 50 goals each, that puts him at 880 with 2 years left on his contact, dude would need to sign another year and score 40 goals each a season at 39,40 and 41 but hey if anyone can do it it's him.

40 would be good,
45 would be great,
50 would be PERFECT!

I doubt it. Gordie Howe was an anomaly. Ovi would be lucky to age like Jagr or even Selanne.

Bolded is a strange statement considering OV has already aged better than both.

30 goal seasons after age 30
OV: 6x (soon to be 7x)
Jagr: 4x
Selanne: 4x

40 goal seasons after age 30
OV: 5x (soon to be 6x)
Jagr: 1x
Selanne: 2x

50 goal seasons after age 30
OV: 3x (possibly 4x)
Jagr: 1x
Selanne: 0x

PPG seasons after age 30
OV: 3x (possibly 4x)
Jagr: 3x
Selanne: 3x

After age 37 (OV's current age), Selanne had 1 30 goal season and 1 PPG season while Jagr had zero and zero. I'm confident OV will do better.

He eligible as both LW & RW in 2012-13 season :nod:

I would go a step further and say that OV will have a 30 goal season post 40 if he decides to play

If it's strictly about the memory and not the money then why tf would you bring up the value of hockey cards in the same paragraph and make it about money?

I just said it bothered me that something part of the game and way more tangible than cards were worth less monetarily lol

It doesn't mean I collect them for the money, or for that matter, the kid would be thinking about it

anyway back to Ovechkin

The League getting high scoring again could not have come at a better time for Ovechkin (I am not saying this as a "hater" just that we're kinda back to a season where it seems like 40 goal scorers are going to be handed out like candy which really helps Ovechkin as he ages but remains productive to keep racking up goal totals without having to lead the league in Goals... which is more than fair considering how much lower scoring Ovechkin's era was to the guy he's chasing).

Not having longevity is generally outside of a players control. Their body breaks down, injuries take their toll or players lack fitness.

The fact that Ovi has remained as steady of a scorer for as long as he has cements him as the greatest scorer to ever play the game. If your debate rests on coulda's and woulda's you've already lost.

Ovi will stand alone at the top of the goalscorers peak soon. The only way to beat him, is to beat him.
I mean I have lost I don't think Ovie is the greatest goal scorer of all time

I think he's up there

And I don't think I can lose by having an opinion

If we go by goals per game he's 7th all time

there is lots of ways I can skiew an argument in my favor.

I out him in my top 5 of

Mike Bossy
Wayne Gretzky
Mario Lemieux
Ovie
Rocket Richard

There is more to things than longevity

He is in elite conversation I dont feel the need to label him as the best

I feel like if you have the career all time numbers than you check all the boxes.

You don't get to that level by not being among the best. And longevity should absolutely be a factor. Just because of all the what if's a major one is also "Well what if their scoring fell off later on in their career and all those per game numbers massively dip?"
