Interesting that he’s the only player with more goals than assists. I wonder what other players goal scoring totals would be if they focused on goal scoring as much as Ovi.

Either way, it’s an elite list. He’s one of the best of all time.
Common question asked by people who do not watch the players around Ovechkin routinely fail to convert easy chances for absolutely no reason at all. This was brutally exposed when Ovechkin couldn't find the back of the net in the first half of last season.

The extended health struggles of Backstrom and Oshie, Kuznetsov's mental issues which led to him basically giving up on the ice for most of half a decade... It's led to a weird situation where Tom Wilson has been the most reliable (combining availability and season-to-season consistency) secondary goal producer on the team. Offensive dynamo, Tom Wilson. And then Tom had an injury season.

Contrary to what a lot of people seem to think, Ovechkin does not, in fact, exist in some weird magical hockey bubble where the rest of the stuff going on with his team does not affect him.

You could also invert that statement and wonder how many assists Ovi would have if he had a pass-first mentality. I would imagine he’d be well over 1,000.

Either way, being the greatest goal scorer in the history of the sport is a far more prestigious accomplishment. He will hopefully retire as the sole member of the 900 goal club.
Yeah absolutely. He is a good passer and his assists totals would be much higher, but how much goal scoring would he sacrifice? Maybe he’s not close to Gretz.

I just find it interesting to think about when comparing the great scorers even though there’s no way to know for sure. He will go down as the greatest goal scorer but I don’t think he’s the best. Some people may not agree there’s a distinction.

Wonder if any of the other 5 had the pleasure of playing with players like Joey Crabbe, Tyler Sloan and the black hole of shooting known as Marcus Johansson.

Do you know that overhyped Sid just running away from minuses to the bench? That was the main reason PIT didn't get the PO spot last year.
Plus/minus is a trash stat. Cheaters absolutely can rig this stat. One like Ovechkin prefers to stay on the ice, the other like Sid prefers fake pluses to frame his teammates (usually it's Malkin).

How much is Crosby paying for the rent in your head?

Seven hundred goals and seven hundred assists

Gretzky 894 - 1963
Ovechkin 853 - 700
Howe 801 - 1049
Jagr 766 - 1155
Dionne 731 - 1040
Esposito 717 - 873

I wonder if Sid can reach this too. He has the assists already obviously at 1009. He currently has 593 goals with 2 more years under his contract after this at the moment. 30 goals a year would put him on 682 (Less the one he's scored this year). He would need to play another year but not impossible.

That is due to games played/injuries for Malkin

Malkin: 1149 games : 499 goals, 804 assists = 36 goals and 57 assists per 82 for his career with majority of it being in low scoring period (2008-2018)

OV; 1428 games (counting tonight): 853 goals, 700 assists = 49 goals and 40 assist per 82 for his career with majority of it being in low scoring period (2008-2018)

OV is the greater player all time due to crazy 3-year peak+goal scoring prime & logenvity but Malkin is an all-time great hurt by injuries and low scoring league/linemates impacting his assist totals.

Malkin is pretty significantly a better overall passer+playmaker than OV just like OV is for goal scoring vs Malkin

They are the 2 clear cut best Russian careers in the NHL (old legends from Russia who came in late 20s and 30s not as good NHLers as these two)
Thought this was going to be an ov bashing post from the opening, solid post

I think he gets there.

The reality is that it’s a 20 year sample size and he's had more assists than goals 4 times.
