One way or another Leafs had/have holes to fix on D. Tavares gives them the option to move high value, lesser core pieces like Kadri and Nylander to fix those holes, without crippling their offense.

Adding Tavares was never the problem. It's not trading Nylander for a D - something they can still do eventually albeit with diminished returns post-contract extension.

So he was overpaid when he was nominated for the Norris just 15 months ago?

The only time it's really an overpayment, the only reason you can even try to fancy the thought, is because he had lingering injuries. Outside of that he's a #1 D, and newsflash, you wont get a #1D in this league under 8mil after restriction age ends. Unreal, the level of bias here.

3m over? Find me a true #1 D outside of restriction age who makes 6 million.

There are only 2 dmen with a higher cap hit in the entire league (doughty, karlsson). 3 make 8m on the nose and only 4 north of that.

A lot of it has to do with how the negociations went with him and the bridge deal. I don't blame him or his agent to try and get the most money. I just don't think he's worth his contract for 3 reasons : his injuries have been serious. I don't think his style (as of today) will age well. He has showed signs of slowing down. Now he may very well prove me wrong, and I hope he does. Blame MB if you want, but I look at pietrangelo/Hedman type deals and I think we missed the boat.

And L.A could have had an even better offer. You dont know that they didnt.
does not matter really, cause it's that simple really

Bergevin wanted the L.A. deal
Pacioretty said NO
Bergevin ended up trading Pacioretty to Vegas.

so give credit to MB for making a good trade if you want, but please lets not pretend (cause that's what it is) what he got from Vegas was a PRIORITY...

seriously, it's becoming stupid now...

Going to head over right now for a laugh or 2 or 11... million :naughty:

Thanks for the heads up!

The Marner threads on the Leafs board is the most entertaining to read all the outrage. The Marner threads on the mainboard are pretty good as well. The Leaf fans who have turned on Mitchy Maple Leaf will quickly get over it though once Marner re-signs and puts up a 5 point night. :)

Those trades weren't rebuilding trades. Those trades were done because those players became problematic. Both were traded for NHLers of about the same age. It's not because we got a prospect back in one of the two trades that those are rebuilding moves.

I'm buying that completely. They were persona non grata trades. Galchenyuk and Pacioretty were seriously cramping Bergevin's style and casting him in a bad light. Glad Bergevin found a match for his arrogance in Walsh. Fun times while Bergevin and Walsh traded barbs and the awkwardness that resulted the longer it took for Bergevin to trade Pacioretty.

Fan ultimatums are the biggest joke of the internets. Remember all those fans who were supposed to quit hockey when the last lock out happened? Yeah, they all quit, didn't you know?

It absolutely matters. Let's say LA gave us a much better package. How is it Bergevins fault that Pacioretty nixed the trade? Bergevin got a much better offer in this case which would undoubtedly be a priority.

You do not know that.

It's only you assuming that what he wanted and what he got are the same thing.

It does actually, and is one of the reason people fail in life, planning...
So... what Bergevin got was NOT what he wanted? He accidentally stumbled on a 19-year old prospect instead of a 30-year old vet?

I don't know what case you're making here.

It’s hard managing these high players and their contracts. Nylander should have been moved. Marner will not stand for being paid less than Matthews or Tavares

NYR got what a rebuilding team gets.
Toronto got what a rebuilding team gets.

We got something in btw... And "hope" that a few good prospects (Suzuki, Caufield, Poehling) can exceed draft expectations and become Marner/Matthews/Kakko(?) type impact players... Before the wheels fall off Weber or Price demands a trade
Stop with this meaningless argument. A team could win a Cup without both of them ; It won't be the end of this franchise the day they are less effective . They will only play secondary role like Chara , and the Primeau , Brook, Romanov will be there instead

I completely agree. It gives marner a position of strength because they let Nylander pull off his little show last year. Id love to be a fly on the wall to see what kind of welcome these guys get when they crawl back in the dressing room, especially after potentially missing games.

Considering that neither have ever won a cup... Thank you for pointing out the obvious.

Next time perhaps try to respond to the post your quoting with something other than trivial nonsense.

FYI, the odds on Primeau, Romanov & Brook not becoming NHL regulars is greater than the odds of them becoming cup winners, let alone impact nhlers... Terrible take.

If they're only going to play a secondary role they might as well be traded while they still have value.

It's the most entertaining topic I've read on HF in months especially since the report of Marner turning down the 7x11m offer yesterday. Some of the overreactions and the amount of outrage by some Leafs fans over this have been quite ridiculous though. Some fans it seems take this stuff way too seriously but it does make for some pretty entertaining reading. :)
The Subban bridge threads were epic.

$6.25mil per for Morrissey seems like a lot, but I do wish Mete was more of a Morrissey. #everydayislikesunday

I disagree here, Morrissey is WIN number one defenceman, he's worth at least that. I would for myself pay him 7.5M whitout any problem.

I was expecting someone to eventually bring this up and yes they were epic but the Marner threads are even more epic IMO. I guess that's what happens when the Habs and Leafs are the 2 largest and also the most passionate fanbases on HF.
