Dallas's loss tonight opens the door to Colorado actually taking 1st place in Central. Avs are 5 pts back but have 3 games in hand.

That would be a terrible mistake for them to make.

St.Louis GM said he was just doing a retooling...so terrible mistake he will make.
Doug Armstrong's a pretty good GM. He's not going to trade all three 1st round picks and certainly won't trade the Blues 1st as it's going to be a lottery pick. He simply has a lot of weapons at his disposal to make a pitch for Meier.

Retooling rarely works...ask Marc Bergevin
The problem with retooling is it often starts with the cognitive dissonance that the team is good and that the problem is 2-3 cancers. You know like said MB who tought he had a good team and Subban was the problem while in fact the reality is the team was Price.

Blues have an even worse defense than us and it's midnight for Bennington his Cinderella story is over. Adding Meier wont do anything. They have two good young forwards they should sell the rest and start over.

Bergevin tried retooling but he actually looked more like he was rebuilding.

He did everything wrong.

He missed the playoffs 4 years in a row and probably would have finished bottom 5 in the fifth year if not for covid.

He then proceded to go all in on a year where his team clearly was not winning or even ready. ( He got lucky to get to the finals and players where playing for Price and Weber so they had a lot of added value to that run )

He then lost really good assets like Danault and Tatar for absolutely nothing and handcuffed the team with a lot of really really bad contract.

If he did a real rebuild, he would have missed the playoffs also for 4 or 5 years. But we would have the equivalent of the value of a lot of players in draft picks or quality prospect right now.

If Bergevin would have been a competent GM, we would either be at the start of a really good upswing or at the start of a rebuild after 10 years of playoffs appearances.

We lost at least 5 years because of him and we never attained the peak we could have also because of him.

Don't say that you know you'll force us to suffer thru 10 guys coming here to say the Hawks rebuild was not planned and that it was an accident. Like if it mattered.
Colorado - rebuild
Tampa - rebuild

Only one team can win so nothing’s a guarantee but cup winners are almost always rebuilds. So from that perspective YES it works.

No way STL ownership will allow an all out strip down and rebuild, even more so now with local cable revenue in jeopardy with bankruptcy filing

This supposition is based on unwillingness to recognize it’s a business first & foremost and believing winning makes the asset more profitable which in modern sports doesn’t unless it’s a play toy for a mega rich tycoon.

The Blues are owned by a consortium of local St Louis businessmen - a hodge podge like the Expos were. Nothing matters more than steady cash flow year in year out.

Armstrong’s done a terrific job given the limitations he has to work with

What exactly is the mistake?
He started to sell his UFAs as if he was going for a rebuild, but then announced he was just doing a retool. Now he has holes in his top 6 and need to acquire top 6 players to fill those and that doesn't fix the team issues at defense/goaltending...

And Meier should cost more than ROR to get, so the whole process will end up a negative budget in term of assets management.

I'd try to get Meier even if I was rebuilding.

He's only 26. Still got many years of good hockey left.
