Only way to cut down on head hit is to suspend players more. The NRL plays one game a week on the weekend and there's usually between 3 and 5 suspensions every week, Almost any illegal hit is a suspension.

They are enforcing the rule the way it is written, which make most head hit legal, the only illegal one are the blindsided and the "targeted".

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an
opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and
such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.
In determining whether contact with an opponent's head was
avoidable, the circumstances of the hit including the following shall be
considered:
(i) Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the
opponent’s body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor
timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the
body upward or outward.
(ii) Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by
assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full
body check unavoidable.
(iii) Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body
or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way
that significantly contributed to the head contact.

One of the thing that needs to change in the NHL is the old excuse "it's going fast". Pro athletes have incredible reaction time. eSports guys too. We're talking between 100ms and 250ms. When a player hit another player in a vulnerable position we should at least see an intention, a reflex, trying to diminsing the severity of the contact. With the abscence of said intention it should be an automatic suspension.

The NHL rule is garbage. It should always have been the same rule as IIHF.

She is right that it shouldn't be necessary but wrong that things are changing. Walsh should insist on severe penalties for head hits. The suspension should not come with loss of pay though. Hopefully players who get multiple suspensions can't get jobs because teams aren't going to want to pay them to sit in the stands.

Means hitting is out if they go that way, as there are a lot of "clean" Hite that just catch the head.


The ironic thing is in the next CBA they'll likely go with more severe punishments for hits to the head if deemed requiring supplemental discipline, which in turn will have the PA defending that play saying it isn't that bad and just downplaying hits to the head.

Punishing hits where players crouch to explode upward with their legs would really help to reduce the amount of head contact because even if the initial point of contact is in the chest, they end up sliding upward in the head if they aren't timed perfectly.
