HF Habs: Out Of Town Thread: 2023-2024 season

The business is not about actual fan interest, as long as corporate boxes & seats are sold and paid for. Pro sports is about using the pro sports team as a flow through share / a means of legalized money laundering - winning is a pure nicety and makes the few diehards happy.

There isn’t some miraculous “fan interest” that developed over last 2-seasons in Fla, it’s the same market that’s been there for the previous 20+ years.

Vinik never bought the TBay team for Lightning /hockey, he in fact didn’t even bother showing up for 2-Cup finals not wanting to miss his beloved Red Sox - he bought the team as a means of non taxation on his hedge fund to flow it through to own waterfront area around the arena.. the Lightning were simply throw in for the deal

It wasn’t that long ago TBay, Canes, Fla were all written off as dead franchises

I don't get it, is the money dirty? Why does it need laundering?

How does owning the team/arena gives him a tax break on a skyscraper next door? The whole area is nice now it's a win for everyone no?

I assume it's the same scheme in Ottawa.

Based on US tax code no corporate tax on hedge fund profits converted via land development programs in conjunction with state / city / town in rebuilding efforts
Basically the tax $ are committed to the “Amelie arena “, “Buffalo downtown” development programs with Vinik & Pegula (in above examples) converting the taxes they owed into ownership of “new” property (flow through) which include sweetheart tax deals / deferrals as negotiated w state / local govt

Red Wings are smoking the Leafs 4-1 after the 1st.

That just means we'll beat the Red Wings twice in a row to end the season with two shutouts.

Avs got rolled pretty bad Mittelstad 13min -3 what a terrible trade
Getting shutout basically clinches the Art Ross for Kucherov. Unless McDavid can somehow have four four point games or Mack has two 5 point games and Kucherov gets nothing in the rest of his current game or the final two.

Been watching the Wings/Leafs game and since the start of the 2nd period the Wings have looked like complete garbage and have barely had a dangerous scoring chance since then.

After a great 1st by the Wings and going up 4-1 they certainly haven't looked a team fighting for their playoff lives since the start of the 2nd that's for sure. They still have time with the game still tied @ 4 with just over 8 minutes to go but still not looking good.

Wings survived the late Leafs PP and now Domi takes a penalty with 10 seconds left so a Wings PP to start OT. Wings get a huge point to keep their playoff hopes alive and really need that extra OT point here.

Cuthbert as said the name Matthews 1458 times this game. :)

Wings with the huge OT win.

Yeah, can't wait for the NHL to move back into a failed market with their 36th+ team.

It's a good sized tv market. They made the wrong move to go to glendale. That rink was in the middle of nowhere in a big entertainment/shopping district plan that halted because of the recession.

They should have gone to Scottsdale.

Teams expecting to contend should never lose 7-0 to anyone this close to the playoffs. Monahan is boss!
Tell that to some of the idiots in the tank thread. One even called him a POS just because he scored. That thread is full of tards man.

As someone who lived in Atlanta area for two years between 2008 - 2010, specifically North of the city - a posh area with a lot of corporate presence and wealth, I can tell you that those people did not give a rat's ass about hockey. Many didn't even know Atlanta had an NHL team. I still keep in touch with some people there and, trust me, they're not going to go watch hockey. Atlanta is a bad hockey market. Atlanta is a pretty bad sports market even.

Hockey market , not a hockey market is irrelevant…. as long as someone is ready to fork over $1.7B — $2B for an expansion franchise fee NHL owners are happy as a pig in sh*t
