No there won't be any expansion. The reason is the amount of games to play/show increasing passed the actual profitability of presenting more and more. The league will have issues with broadcasters, arenas, competition from the MLB, etc... I think they stick to 32 clubs for another CBA at least. Then they can think about splitting into 2 leagues never playing each other. The product will have spoilage issues, however.
They need to solidify their current markets. Arizona moving to Utah is a very good hint at that. There will be other teams going under review until the next CBA. Same objective: Making sure the markets they are exploiting are healthy for the league.
Another hint is Rogers choking on their broadcasting deal with the NHL. They just can't profit after spending that much to beat Bell. They had to start selling to Amazon. That imho means we'll see the league go onto streaming next and that, I hope, will mean the end of all regional blackouts. Another problem with the way the NHL is operating. They can't even sell to everyone because they have to protect local broadcasters. Now imagine adding more local broadcasters who will need more protection again. It just won't work forever.
I'm happy Arizona is moving.
Question: Who's next?
