I just want to know what the hell happened with Lundell and Luostarinen this year? Is it "young guys struggling under PoMo"? Confidence issues? Something else?

Lundell especially was expected to take another step; instead he seems to be regressing. Both were supposed to be part of the "younger core". (So was Knight, for the matter.) I know prospects/young player sometimes have ups and lows in their development, but seriously, what’s going on there?
I think having to play with Cousins isn’t doing those two any favours.

Any concern about signing Reinhart long term, when he is turning 29 early next season? Doesn't that kind of go counter to how we handled the Huberdeau situation?

Love Reinhart, he's obviously having an amazing year. But there is some risk to having a high cap on him, say ages 29-36.

I think Reinhart's game ages well, he relies on his high IQ more than most. Plus I think trading Huberdeau was about more than strictly his age/cap hit and there were probably other issues like fit and compete.

Could see us giving him $8-8.5M AAV x 8 years.

Don't really disagree with this, although I think the org. seems to really like Ekblad and its possible to keep all those guys plus Ekblad given where cap is going. Also trading Ekblad won't open a lot more extra cap because you'd have to replace him on defense with someone equivalent (~$5M like you said). So it'd really only open up ~$3M in cap by dealing Ekblad.

I can see us trading him, but I think it would be more about giving us flexibility to add a bit more depth, concern about his injury history and adding some futures from a trade to replenish our pipeline. Won't be enough extra cap to add anything significant. Also why I see the most likely scenario is us keeping him.

I've never gotten the impression that the mgmt is in love with Ekblad but I'd reckon that since the Panthers never have had enough competent dmen to challenge the incumbents then it's easier to lean towards Ekbad being a vital piece for success. Meaning that Ekblad might be $7.5mil dman for another team but some $5mil dman pro scouted by Zito will likely be more valuable for the Panthers.

The savings might be only like $3mil but if Zito can get a better dman to play with Forsling and upgrade the bottom pairing in the process then I don't think Zito will waste time with trading Ekblad.

You could be right but also Cuzzy seems to be more noticeable than them lately. That kid sure is a hard hat & lunch pail player. He may not score but he certainly works his ass off. I was hoping he was going to keep pestering Benn and maybe take him to the box with him.

I think I’m in the minority when I say that Ekblad probably sticks around.

Guy still anchored our team to a SCF appearance last year munching monster minutes. I don’t really see many others on the roster rn who are defensively sound enough to step up and fill that role…so unless we are getting something else back.

I don’t think Montour will be repeating last year again…OEL can step up…but he’s also like 32.

I’m a firm believer we have a cup winner here with a few more tweaks. I’m looking mostly at the third line than changing up our D personnel.
You are not wrong on what he brings, but in my opinion, collectively, the defense can make up those minutes and skill.
We have a very good defense right now, and that was even before Ekblad and Mountor came back, so, I think management is looking at those possibilities, they need to give Reinhardt a raise and others.

I can't even imagine if Lundell and Loustarine were playing at least at the pace of last year, there is always something.

Cousins may not score, but he is always in the middle of the hustle, always in the play.

I think Zito and his regime doesnt have any, ANY extreme loyalty to players/staff that they did not hire themselves. Huberdeau getting moved should have been your signal. Brunette also. The only one they have showed loyalty to from the old regime is Barkov thus far.

Bob's contract is an anchor so it's hard to say where the loyalty is there, ALTHOUGH they do have history in Columbus. Who knows how much they even wanted to stand up for Q if at all. They didnt hire him either. Draft picks? See Tippett.

Gudas they tried but he was overpaid. Dont be surprised if the loyatly isnt there for Ekblad but is more present for Montour/Forsling.

The only outlier here is Spencer Knight. I have no idea how he got that contract. Maybe he was drunk.

He's not leaving Pittsburgh. I don't know if you saw the texts that leaked when the Penguins were f***ing him around, but there's zero chance that guy is leaving Crosby. I'll be stunned if they don't retire together.

Ya I vaguely remember, wish we had of pulled the trigger years ago when it was floated around here for Borgstrom (when he had that Denver hype) + 1st + 2nd
