Ottawa Senators for sale (upd: sold to Michael Andlauer)

Swing and a miss... I guess you're not aware that the team comes with a + - $150M land asset out in Kanata eh?

You mean the land which location is the exact reason the team want to move elsewhere downtown?

Ok lets add 150M, if you want, I really dont care. :-)

Is that land and building included in the price of the team? Pitt and nash didn’t own their buildings and went for around $900 mill.
Yes it is, Canadian Tire Centre and massive surrounding lands are owned by the team. Ottawa is unlikely to sell for as much as Pittsburgh or Nashville without a concrete deal with the NCC.

But for what it is worth- A/ Rumoured sale price is in excess of $900M so maybe they will... B/ Forbes has Ottawa listed as equally as valuable as Nashville so anyone suggesting that they'll sell for $500M is obviously uneducated and trolling.

If figured the melnyk children would not want to continue to hold onto the land and building for another 3-4 years while the new owners worked with the city to get a new arena built. They’d probably want to unload everything all at once.

So I should
Not be surprised that the sports media doesn’t separate out the price for the team and land/building.

I fully understand Reynolds & co decision. You're talking 1B for a NHL team you wont move. Thats half the price of a NBA franchise.

So much more lucrative investments around.

Lol so much for Reynolds bringing a TV show and whole new level of popularity to the league/Sens.

Did Reynolds ever say he'd do a TV show?

Even if he did - would it be as successful? Part of the charm of Welcome to Wrexham was just learning about Wales, the town of Wrexham, and it's supporters. How it's like the third-oldest pro football team in the world or something.

I like Ottawa just fine, but it's a government town, not a quirky Welsh mining town. And the Sens are a fine team, but just generally a very mediocre on-ice performance and a history that only goes back 30 years.

Friedman also said that Vivek Ranadivé, the owner of the Sacramento Kings, is on the scene here.

It was part of the hype machine when he announced he was interested in buying a part of the team. Tho one would think he would want to market his investment as much as possible.

RE bolded - I couldn't agree more.

It’s been reported he had already been filming some of the stuff behind the scenes. Also reported the show was going to give viewers a behind the curtain look at the sale process and arena construction.

Jeffrey and Michael Kimel

The Kimel brothers are the principals in the Harlo Capital Group and are former minority owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

They first approached the late Eugene Melnyk about making a bid for a new arena at LeBreton Flats late in 2021. He was advised by the NHL not to take on any partners until he won preferred bidder status, and that’s a big reason why Jeffrey and Michael are interested in this project.

Jeffrey Kimel is the CEO of Harlo Capital in Toronto.

The organization describes itself as a firm that invests in development projects “strategically located to provide reasonable access to transit infrastructure and to the public and private amenities that have proven to be crucial to the ultimate success of real estate developments.”

Michael Kimel is the co-founder and chairman of the Harlo Entertainment Group. He sat on the management committee of the Penguins before the club sold in 2021 and was named one of Toronto’s top 50 most influential people.

These two are hockey fans who love the game, and having singer Abel Tesafaye (The Weeknd) aboard doesn’t hurt.

MICHAEL ANDLAUER

By all accounts, Michael Andlauer is ready to take the next step.

A minority owner of the Montreal Canadiens since 2009, he wants to see if he can help lead the Senators to the Stanley Cup. Andlauer, 57, is a beer-league goalie who has spent his life in and around the game.

Andlauer purchased the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs in 2003 and in December 2022 he raised $86.6 million by selling 1.76 million shares in the Andlauer Healthcare Group.

He has been working quietly throughout this process and is a member of the NHL’s board of governors. He regularly attends meetings as an alternate for the Habs, and those close to Andlauer say he wants to see what he can accomplish running his own team.

Andlauer founded ATS Healthcare in 1991 and built it from the ground up. He had a contract with the federal government to move the COVID-19 vaccines throughout Canada during the pandemic.

STEVE APOSTOLOPOULOS

League sources confirmed to Postmedia on Monday that Toronto-based billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos entered the final bidding process.

His name emerged in March as one of two formal bidders for the NFL’s Washington Commanders and he was a finalist with a $6 billion bid before the Snyder family reached a deal with a group, led by Josh Harris, that includes Magic Johnson.

An ESPN report said Apostolopoulos also held talks with Michael Jordan about purchasing the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before turning his attention to the Commanders.

We’re told Apostolopoulos has been quietly going about his business since the Melnyk family decided to put the Senators up for sale. He was given access to the data room by GSP and made a “non-binding” bid at the March 6 deadline.

NEKO SPARKS

A Los Angeles-based producer and CEO of Pixel Lime, Neko Sparks has made some notable moves during this process, not the least of which was bringing in rapper Snoop Dogg as a partner.

His partner in this venture is former Los Angeles Kings captain Mattias Norstrom and former New Jersey Devils chief marketing officer Daniel Cherry. Sparks came here in November when the Senators first went up for sale and has been working diligently on putting an ownership group together.

He told CTV Ottawa in March that his group will have the right structure in place. He’s trying to get local money on board.

A report by Sportsnet on Sunday night stated Sparks has brought a First Nations group to the table and they could hold as much as a 10 per cent stake in the team if the bid is successful.

I have a feeling it was Andlauer all along. He’s been staying silent through all of this and already is already on the BoG. Bettman likes his guys.

Bettman was probably dissapointed Reynolds chose Remington since he wanted him to go to Andlauer at some point.

Paywall. Good article looks at the nuts & bolts of getting deal to finish line.

Decision on new ownership likely coming this week. Then the lawyers get in to workout the purchase agreement before it goes to BOG. But sounds like it can close before the draft.

Bratty Family are stand up guys and know Bettman as well.

The bonus with them is they would've brought in house development expertise.
