OMG67, you are probably right about the situation the Petes are in, but they won't be able to help themselves. They see themselves right now leading the Conference, lowest number of regulation losses in the league and with no one else looking all that scary. Peterborough has been starved for this kind of success since the end of the Dick Todd era. I just can't see a first place team selling even if the long term plan suggests that they should...

The big problem is they don‘t have the assets to buy.

2024---------5th OSH 5th
2025---KGN 3rd LDN 3rd------
2026---------5th
20272nd3rd4th5th OSH 5th

Two 3rds and three 5ths through 2026 isn’t a lot. They do have access tot he 2027 picks but they won’t get them a whole heck of a lot.

I think the Petes are smart enough not to fall into the trap of getting steamrolled by one or two buyers at the deadline. They may be well positioned right now but that is before other teams go through the same process they did last year adding a handful of players to jet ahead of the competition. They know staying status quo won’t help them. They need to Buy or Sell. They really don’t hav much to buy with. Even if they offer up their 2023 1st (Carson Cameron), they likely can only add one elite player or 2-3 good ones. Plus they already traded their Championship winning goalie. As good as the other two may be, if they were serious about contending, they’d keep the guy that got them there last year.

I honestly cannot see a scenario that has the Petes not selling simply because they cannot buy.

I could potentially se them trade Beck and then flip those assets like they did when they added Stillman With the two parts of the MacT trade. Whether a situation exists for them to do that is another story all together but they could do something like that Provided they are able to sell really high on Beck like they did with MacT.

I still circle back to the ‘05 crop. They are almost all gone already. Slim pickings for trad bait next year with the current lineup.

The catch is that things are so messed up in the conference that it is anyone's guess what happens.

Kingston and Mississauga have the players to be hot next year but can also be hot this year. Both have picks available. Kingston may look at what Miss will have next year and decide to move a year early.

It is definitely going to be an interesting time. As to us, I think the 67\s will stay status quo and maybe trade Stoehouse (but then who replaces him?

We do not have the bodies to compete this year this team is going to tire down the stretch we are too short-benched.

I agree that the Petes should make trades and might make a couple, but are they going to trade away a contending team in this conference I am not sure.

We can trade Stonehouse and not have an issue. Technically we need 6 wingers to fill out the top 9.

Foster
Dever
Gerrior
Kelly
Barlas

We trade a 3rd and 5th for a decent OA Centre. Stonehouse goes for two 2nds and two 3rds. Essentially the OA Centre cost us the picks from the Cranley deal last eyar, a solid tradeoff overall.

We still have Whitehead centring Hilton and Korbler. If Uronen comes back before the end of the season then he slots into that lineup. The younger guys on the 4th line can drill up the lineup to cover for injuries. Sirman is likely to come back in the New Year as well and fill in on the wing. There are competent options available.

Can we replace everything Stonehouse brings to the team? No. Definitely not. But, if we do sell off a bit and decide it is more about next season and beyond, that is the likely resulting lineup which isn’t horrible at all. And, depending ont he quality of the OA Centre, it may actually be a solid lineup.

We can make do with the existing D-Men but it would be ideal to try to add a Right Side #4 with a big body and a willingness to use it. Even better if we can fall into an 18 year old at that position. He’d be back next year.

This is a lot of moving parts and not likely to all happen but if I were to build a blueprint for the remainder of the year that wasn’t trying to contend, that is how I would craft it.

I think it could be possible we only make two moves. 1 moving Stonehouse & 2 adding a 3rd line centre for cheap & ending the season like this

Pinelli-Gardiner-Dever
Gerrior-Lawrence-Foster
Barlas- …………- Sirman
Hilton-Whitehead-Kelly
Korbler

Stonehouse Traded
Uronen- Out for the season

Again the challenge with this is that we are only one injury away from a crap storm.

You can not play the last half of the season with only 3 defence pairings and think that you are going to be a competitive team.

Same with the forwards IF Ko0rbler is going to be an afterthought then if I was him I would say thanks but I think I will go home and play where at least I will get ice time to develop sleep in my own bed and not have to worry about things.

No matter if you trade for an oa center this is still a 4-5th place team when all is said and done.

Stay with what we have and look to next year.
For all your crappng on Barlas let me point out that he our top face-off person, has a +5 putting him in the top 3 in plus/minus and is exactly point-wise where a 3rd line center should be.

Give the kid a friggin break. He played wing last year started the season on wing and now is developing into a center. Everyone was doing the same thing to Cam Tolnai look at what happened.

I think we go with what we have unless this team is going to brak it's deals with the CCHL teams that players are with this is the team we have this year and this is the bench we have.

Is it a 6 month recovery? That’s what I am hearing but no one can confirm. I was hoping it was more of the 3 month variety. He’d be back end of February.
Unless somthing drastically changes we will not see him again this season from my understanding

If you’re trading Stonehouse in an effort to contend next year, why stop with him? OA’s are proving to be exceptionally inexpensive this year and 19 year olds are still garnering big prices.

Why go into next year with your OA’s set? If you’re selling one, you may as well sell two or three 19 year olds. After those trades, you deal Max to a team that will start him and add two OA’s on the cheap.

You can call Yanni, Dietsch and Nelson up for the second half and get them valuable experience.

For next year, you have the best picks stash in the league that can be used to acquire anyone in the league and fill two open OA slots. Also, you return essentially your entire team and arguably the best Goalie in the league.

I’m not sure the market will bear enough for the 67’s to get a reasonable return for guys like Mayich and Gerrior. I think it may turn out to be a bit on the weaker side where we end up keeping Stonehouse because of it.

I don't see any scenario where Boyd trades away Mayich or Gerrior.

Firstly, I don't think you can really do any better with the OA spot that Mayich would vacate. He's already a reliable #1 defenseman, part of the team's leadership group, and is now pairing up with the team's top offensive defenseman in Mews. He'll be even bigger and stronger next year. The only scenario I see Mayich dealt is one in which Boyd knows he's going pro next season, which I find unlikely.

Gerrior is a versatile top-6 winger who can play with and complement a variety of centers, and play up and down the lineup where needed. He's a fast skater, aggressive, has a great shot, and has a knack for making highlight reel plays. He's also a great PKer and also part of the team's leadership group. It would take some balls to trade him this year and expect any sort of big upgrade next year but I guess its possible. From what I've heard, I think this is an instance in which the negatives (most notably the impact on the locker room from removing Gerrior) outweigh the positives.

I think where Barberpole is going is would we be able to replace both Mayich and Gerrior next year buying OA’s at a lower price than what we’d get in return for them this year as 19 year olds.

For example, we saw Savard go for a 2nd, two 3rds and a 4th as a 19 year old last year but only an 8th as an OA this year. In BP’s scenario, maybe we trade Mayich for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th but we replace him next year with an available OA D-Man for a 3rd and a 5th. We come out ahead and we aren’t any worse for it.

To me, the logic is sound. Where I think it is flawed is I don’t think this will be a SELLERS market. I don’t feel we’d get a valuable enough return for those two guys to outpace the amount we’d likley need to spend next year when the trade market is more competitive. We may end up on the losing side of that with the market this year compared to where I anticipate it to be next year.

On the flip side, if we had done it last year where we traded the 19 year olds and filled our OA holes this year, we’d have made out like bandits!

Ugh - that sounds suspiciously like a torn ACL. As a two time loser in the torn ACL sweepstakes I feel for the kid - that's a long, tedious rehab after the surgery. He's young, so if he works hard and listens to his physio he will bounce back, but man there are times during that process that you don't think your knee is ever going to work properly again. It's the longest nine months of your life...

I understand the logic, but even disregarding the discrepancy in sellers'/buyers' markets I'm not sure if its more likely than not that we come out ahead honestly...not when dealing with a player of Mayich's quality and importance to the 67s. There is tangible, on-ice performance that we can point to with Mayich as someone that can defend at a high-level, move the puck competently, plays physical and doesn't hesitate to drop the gloves, and there is intangible qualities like his ability to pair up with an elite defender (Matier) and make that pairing better, knowledge and understanding of Cameron's systems, desire to play in a familiar environment in Ottawa, leadership abilities, trust/confidence of the coaching staff, etc.

To me, it seems like we're taking two steps backwards then a step and a half forward.

The execution risk for a player swap involving Mayich is high imho. Less so for Gerrior (who would likely be the one dealt this season in the absence of Stonehouse signing an NHL contract).

Much like selling a stock and hoping to buy it back at a lower price, I understand the logic and it is sound but I see it as high risk. I'm a buy-and-hold kind of guy!

I couldn’t have put it better myself. With this being an OHL Mem Cup hosting year and seeing as many as 5 or 6 contenders out west, this could end up as a seller’s year.

If it’s a buyer’s year, I would suggest buying heavily as the only sure other buyer in the East is Sudbury. Next year will see Missy, Oshawa, Brantford and Kingston likely buying in the East alone unless one decides to push ahead this year.

You’ve got to read the market and time things correctly.

And I think that is pretty accurate. The inconsistency in the market not aligning with the competitiveness is suspect and makes it very difficult to decide on a buy or sell decision for MANY teams this year, not just Ottawa.

I really think this trade market will not reveal itself until after the New Year’s break. It may even be delayed further with a flurry of deals only a couple days before the deadline. I really think there are a handful of teams that could go either way and need to get a stronger sense of the market trending before they make a final decision.

A great signing.

Got to wonder if MacKenzie is getting invited to Canada’s world junior camp?

Got to wonder if:
1> MacK’s injury is longer term than we know
2> Whether a pending deal for Donoso is out there and Beast is accurate in assuming Nelson is the backup in that scenario
3> IF the 67’s are simply getting his signature to paper in the same manner as they do for a lot of players mid-season that we don’t see until next season.

They do have three in three this weekend. If MacK is not back, maybe they bring up Nelson for The game agaisnt Windsor. Windsor on the last game of their Eastern swing coming in as the 20th place team may be the right game to give Nelson.

They did mention during the intermission commentary at the Mississauga game on Saturday that MacKenzie is considered day to day.

There was one real buyer (Hamilton) after the shut-down; prices were not low.
Only a couple of obvious buyers, and one obvious seller with anything worth selling right now.

It would be fun to see Nelson on the bench as backup Friday and Saturday with a start on Sunday. I know I said he should continue playing in Tier II and I still feel that way but it is still awesome to see a 16 year old goalie get an opportunity. While MacK is out, why not pull him up for the weekend?

Navan has 2 games this weekend so not sure if Nelson is available.

The big problem is they don‘t have the assets to buy.

*IF* the Petes are still having this kind of success towards the deadline then this is the most realistic option I would think. First off depends on the type of player or duo of players you can get if you are trying to base it off the McTavish deal. @OMG67 and I both feel the same way about what the Petes should do at this deadline but yes if we entertain a potential buy and sell (McTavish/Stillman/Pharand/Melee/picks) then it would be the Petes flipping most of what they get for Beck for an '05. Just did a quick scan of teams with and '05 that fit this mould and would have reasonable interest in making a deal and this list is not that big. The list is even smaller if the Petes want to acquire someone who can make an actual impact and doesn't have 3 or 4 points in 20 or so games this year.

At the 2022 deadline '03 Mason McTavish was traded to Hamilton for:
- '05 F Alex Pharand (2021 round 1, 14th overall)
- '04 F Jonathan Melee (2020 round 2, 21st overall)
- 2nd round pick 2022
- 2nd round pick 2022
- 3rd round pick 2023
- 3rd round pick 2023
- 3rd round pick 2024
- conditional 4th round pick 2025.

For the purpose of this discussion, we have to assume that Owen Beck is sent to Saginaw for:
- '07 F Aiden Young (2023 round 1, 16th overall)
- 2nd round pick 2025
- 2nd round pick 2025
- 3rd round pick 2025
- 3rd round pick 2026

As I am writing this I think you might be able to swap out Storch for '05 Nic Sima and that might be the player the Petes would 'flip' assets for and you get him in the same deal. BUT if we continue on with our initial thought then realistically the only players that would maybe be available as a Beck deal and flip assets would be:
- '05 C Easton Wainwright (SAR)
- '05 C Declan Waddick (OS)
- '05 RW Charlie Paquette (GUE)
- '05 LW Vilmer Alriksson (GUE)
But the biggest name by far would be '05 C Carey Terrance who probably wouldn't be available
but for the right offer you never know. Terrance would require the entire Beck return and a bit more but if you're the Petes and Mike Oke why not go bold and give it a shot and then sell Terrance next year even thought the Otters won’t be moving him lol unless they are crazy out of it by the deadline but they still wouldn’t. Last year Beck was a 2 year guy and was putting up more points and and went for much less than Stillman did as a 2 year deal.

Navan has 2 games this weekend so not sure if Nelson is available.

I think he can be called up on an emergency basis because of injuries to goalies. I know they have Saari but he is more of a BUG and is only there on emergency basis. He can’t start unless there is another injury etc. Now that Nelson is signed, they should be able to call him up if MacK is still injured because he is the 3rd signed Goalie. I am not even sure if they are allowed to use Saari now. I think they could only use him because they didn’t have a 3rd goalie under contract.

Maybe someone more knowledgable than me in this regard can clarify the emergency goalie rules?
