I missed the game tonight. Looks like we may have gotten “goalied” tonight with the shot clock at 30+ shots for Ottawa and one goal. IS that how it went or were we just a perimeter team tonight?

And I think that is the same sort of issue last year in some respects. We lack depth at centre and capable top 4 D. MacK is such a difference maker for the mistakes our younger D make. HE is so solid.

It will be interesting to see what ends up happening when all is said and done. I still lean towards a mild retool with one of the D-Men (Smyth) likely gone as well as Stonehouse being offered at the right price. I don't know about Donoso. I don't have a strong enough read on the goaltending market. DiVin and Sztuska are both likely available as 19 year old so those teams don't need to open an OA spot for them. I think if Donoso get moved, it is more for his own benefit to a team that sells off a higher valued OA and opens a spot where he can come in and solidify their goaltending. I don't think he goes to a contender at this point.
I know people want a winning team EVERY GAME EVERY YEAR AND GO TO THE MEM CUP.

But that is fantasy. Every team has to hit a pause button once in awhile and regroup and restock.

This is Ottawa's year, and I think next year will be too.

We have a team that in a normal season would have been fighting for 4-6 in the conference. No one expected us to be competitive this year. The difference is that there are weaker teams in our division and Kingston has a did as a coach to start.

This year we have just a line up we have no one sitting in the stands. We do not have the wealth of talent that we can turn to to give a player a night off.

We are a rebuilding team. The lineup shows that.

We have A qualified center. we have a rookie who is learning the center ropes. We have a player who was drafted as a center but hd the usual troubles and was moved to wing now back taking faceoffs. I might as with the best percentage on the team and is relearning how to play center.

We have no real scoring depth on the second line let alone the first except for Pinelli.

Next year if we are lucky, we will have 3 centers and either a rookie center or a euro center. Kingston and Mississauga will have power teams.

Let's enjoy the season as it is and watch the development of the team.

I think this and Wednesday answered the question this is a status quo team. We do not have enough parts to trade anyone so we are going to have to stay the way we are this year and look forward to the players in JrB that will join us next year.

Mostly agreed. I don’t think we will have the 3 centres next year. Whitehead probably queues in the 3-hole. Gardiner in the 1-hole. They still don’t have a 2-hole centre. They don’t have anyone in the organization that slots in there. The only option is to potentially release one of the Imports and they snag one in the Import draft. Status quo won’t help that at all.

BUT, you are 100% right that in a normal year, they slot into the 4-6 hole. But that isn’t the year we are in so decisions need to be made based on what the current situation is, not what it would usually be. Same next year if we consider them a contender but are sitting in the 4-5 hole because the season produces 3-4 elite teams ahead of them. They can choose to buy just because in a normal year they would be a Conference leader. They need ot adjust base don what the situation is in the league that year.

So, in light of all that, as I mentioned, they have another 4-6 weeks to see where they are. IF they are still challenging for a Conference lead (within 6 points) then they have to consider a buy situation. That is something we didn’t fully expect which is fine. I thought we woudl see this exact team this year. I just didn’t think the other teams would be duds With teams like the Petes and Missy leading the way at this point. Odd year results in odd decisions.

Looking at the way things are I see Mississauga and Sudbury if they get their act together being the main leaders. The Petes still could decide, like others, that they can compete they are somewhat in the mix and could decide that next year is the year to retool. considering that they are doing pretty well.
Kingston has the depth so really that puts us in the seeding where we thought we were.

Right now I see the conf standings at Christmas break as

Petes
Mississauga
Kingston
North bay
Ottawa
Sudbury

Then the question becomes what do the Petes and NorthBay do I can see the Petes going for it again if they have the chance.

NorthBay I think will take a look and say sell

Kingston may or may not pick up a player. How well they can rely on Slajko is going to be a question if they decide to go for it.

Sudbury I hear everyone saying they have the better team BUT the paper team is not matching the on-ice team. They have the worst PP in the league.

Ottawa sorry we just do not have the depth forget about missing a center what happens if a player gets injured? we just have a full on ice team.

Peterborough has one 2nd and two 3rds over the next four drafts. That is their draft capital For this deadline. They traded their top 3 in the league goalie (Simpson) for a younger goalie (helps the rebuild) and a 3rd. They traded a point per game OA forward (Lockhart). Nothing the Petes have done suggest they will all of a sudden decide to change course. They not only have chosen their course BUT they have also demonstrated their course with their trades to date. Suggesting the Petes may choose to make another run is preposterous and completely ignores what they have done so far this year and also ignores what they have in the form of tradable assets to use to make their team better. Additionally, they traded away the entire top five rounds of their ‘05 draft class. They won’t have valuable 19 year olds next year to use to rebuild with via trade. I think you continually ignoring the obvious is not productive to the conversation. Sorry to be blunt but circling back to the Petes being a potential contender undermines your argument.

Missy could decide to make a run a year earlier. I like the Steelheads but I will REALLY like them next year if they mostly remain status quo. IF you think he Steelheads could be a contender this year, then next year they’d ill be armed with four 2nds in the very next draft which are gold tickets at the trade deadline. They will have almost a complete roster returning with one additional year of development. They will be VERY well positioned. They have a patient and highly skilled Coach and GM. They made seller moves last year while still being a competitive team for the purpose of setting themselves up next season. Although it is more possible they make serious buyer moves to compete than the Petes, I still feel it is unlikely they make those moves after doing everything they neede to do to set their course last year.

Sudbury is poised to make moves. They have assets and a hunger to do it. They have a strong foundation. They seem to be the most likely to make big moves in the Eastern Conference. I always boil it down to assuming if someone said put $100 bet on the table and tell me which team is most likely to make big moves, I have to make a final decision at that point in time. Sudbury is the team I place the $$ on.

Kingston is the team next most likely to buy big but I still feel there is a gap between their motivation and Sudbury’s motivation. Sudbury wants it more and is more willing to make the big moves. That said, Kingston has assets and likely a strong willingness to win if the market is right. On this, we agree.

North Bay is in a similar pick position as Peterborough. They don’t have the assets to trade at the deadline. They have some conditionals set to return to them but those picks won’t be available as trade assets. Provided th market is right, they will likely move assets out to replenish their picks. They aren’t quite as motivated as Peterborough but pretty close.

Barrie is sort of caught in no mans land right now. Neither good nor bad. They have picks but not loaded. They scream status quo With a slight lean on selling.

Branford is more a year behind where Missy is and a year ahead of where the Petes are. They will lean on selling but could stay status quo without losing sleep.

Oshawa and Niagara are the basement dwellers right now. Oshawa will fight for a playoff spot and likely will make it if one of the selling teams slips too far in the second half. Niagara is in the mix to pick first overall again.

Ottawa is the monkey in the middle. Maybe buy, maybe sell. If they buy, they buy small. If they sell they sell small. Stonehouse may have big value on the trade market, maybe not. He’s harder to read because there are dimensions of his game that can’t be measured with traditional metrics. I assume other GM’s see that as well but how they value it will be seen if/when he gets traded. Edmonton saw the dimensions he brings so it is not like we are talking out our asses.

There was an interesting conversation tonight on the intermission during the Peterborough and Sudbury game on YourTV Peterborough. Scott Arnold who is a member of our local media and is the colour commentator on the Petes TV broadcast said that he thinks the Petes will be buyers at the deadline. It was an interesting comment. The Petes themselves have never said they will be sellers. Rob Wilson said in a recent interview that he is pleased with the results but the team is not sure what they are.

Peterborough is a unique situation at the moment they are in first place in the conference after sweeping their trip north but should be going into a rebuild to recover assets they traded away last year for their championship run. They are short on draft picks in the first five rounds for the next three years with only two, 3rds next year and two 5ths this year so they really don’t have any assets to add players but doing a complete rebuild and trading many of their veteran players is going to really upset many of the fans. Many of them don’t think of it in terms of the OHL cycle but that the team’s best players are being traded. Many fans were upset when Connor Lockhart was traded. Most fans are not going to accept the team going from a contender in 1st place to possibly not making the playoffs. If they were a middle of the pack team or lower it might be more acceptable but not a team that is currently leading the Eastern Conference.

At this point I am not sure what they are going to do. I am torn. My head tells me they need to make a couple of strategic trades to add two young players and draft picks but keep enough to be a middle of the pack team but my heart wants them to keep this team intact.

I think Mississauga will add in an effort to have a play off run this year and try and win a championship next. North Bay likely will try to contend and will likely add a player or two. Kingston has turned it around under their new coach but is this year or is next? Oshawa is the dark horse. They are strong up front but need to add a defenceman or two. Ottawa I think has a chance if they can add an offensive overage centre and a defenceman. Sudbury has not lived up to expectations. Is it coaching or not the right mix of players? Brantford, Barrie and Niagara are not in the mix.

Brantford deserved the win. They had the better scoring chances (including two posts in the 3rd), though their goals were sloppy - a give away in front of the net by Pinelli after some poor defensive zone puck movement by Ewles and Smyth, and a wrister from the point that Donoso should have had (I couldn’t see whether it was tipped or not). Ottawa got their shots but the Brantford goaltender was really good.

I thought Lawrence had a really good game, and Brady is coming along nicely. Some guys didn’t see much ice time in the second half of the game. The defense is very thin without Marrelli (though I think he’s sick so should be back soon).

A little bit of both. The Bulldogs showed more consistent effort and Drobac stopped when they lapsed. Ottawa lacked consistent net presence and, again, practically stuck one in their own net. This group routinely stickhandles through their own crease. Pinelli did so last night and it ended up in the first goal against. Easiest tap-in Xhekaj will ever see.

The 67s seem to have a 2nd line, two thirds and a 4th. There is no top line that provides consistent offence. Two home games in 3 days, a total of 2 goals scored. Last night, when things blew up, with the goalie pulled and 1:16 left, it was our leadership group that was goaded into penalties and they sat out the rest of the game.

Very weak effort overall. Shots on goal can be deceiving. One play stands out. An outlet pass from the Ottawa blue line to an unchecked forward at the Bulldog blue line. No-one anywhere near and he then fires the pack back to an Ottawa player at the Ottawa blue line, giving up an entry into the offensive zone. I'm not sure what they are covering at practice. Very frustrating to watch.

Barrie with Frasca injury and now Akey out for the season will not be middle of pack. Instead of a re-tool, there could be a hard sell and lottery pick in the cards.

I counted again because so many believe NB needs to recoup picks.
(‘similar pick position as the Petes’)
Conditions on Fantili & Zito have not been met, so at this time NB possesses 20 picks in each of the next two drafts. The only missing pick is 2026-2nd.

LOL thank you for not making me feel alone.

I understand what people are saying about Sudbury. but you have read my mind or we think alike. This team on paper should be better than it is and I am wondering if making them play as a team is an issue.

I actually think that Mississauga will run with what they have it seems to be pretty effective, especially with the goaltending they are getting. The worst that can happen is they get beat in the playoffs or are not the top team. Hey that is not bad if they can gain the experience and return to roughly the same team next year.

I think Kingston will stay roughly the way they are and go for the experience. I know Vaccari is playing well but I am not sure Salajko is ready if they need him.

we in Ottawa don't have the depth to be a top contender. No matter what we do we are going to be a short bench and getting tired.

I will stay with my prediction please everyone remember this is my where will they be at christmas.

Understood but the point is they can’t ADD because they don’t have access to the picks. That’s why I said they have some picks coming back later but they can’t access them now to make a run if they chose to do so.

I think that needs to be highlighted when some are suggesting sell/buy etc. Like you said, they don’t need to sell because they do have some picks coming back but that doesn’t mean they can buy because the picks will replenish. They have to have the picks to be able to add. So, NB is in a precarious situation. They are sort of handcuffed.

Thing is buy or sell, odds are NB is at the bottom of the central next season.
NB needs an all-purpose middle six RW and a big stay at home net clearing D to be the eastern conference team to beat (imo).
The Battalion can use ‘26-3,4,5 and ‘27-2,3,4,5 picks and an ‘06 D, import D, a goalie without any affect to the future.

Those pieces aren’t going to get much though. I assume the goalie you list isn’t DiVin. They need him. Their other goalies won’t garner much if anything Considering what goalies go for. Same for the other bodies you referenced.

That would be a really tough shuffle to fill two spots like you suggest are needed.

It's about time the OHL start to recognize Luca Pinelli a bit more. 17 goals in 18 games (so far) and it feels like it's just being overlooked. Time to put some respect beside #20's name

Not sure about that. What would be the cost of a Smith, Smyth, or Smith? The Battalion may have filled that void with an ‘04 jrA D. The middle six spot imo would be Veccia ideally.

He’s definitely had a good season So far. Does he get a little attention from team Canada? Maybe not this year but probably a decent chance next year.

Quite interested to see what Team Canada looks like this year to be honest. But I could definitely see him being as close to a lock as it gets for next years team as well.
