I think he can be called up on an emergency basis because of injuries to goalies. I know they have Saari but he is more of a BUG and is only there on emergency basis. He can’t start unless there is another injury etc. Now that Nelson is signed, they should be able to call him up if MacK is still injured because he is the 3rd signed Goalie. I am not even sure if they are allowed to use Saari now. I think they could only use him because they didn’t have a 3rd goalie under contract.

Maybe someone more knowledgable than me in this regard can clarify the emergency goalie rules?

I was thinking more about if Navan would be upset to lose him for the weekend.

If you're a CCJHL team, you become a destination for kids to play by graduating players to the OHL. They now get to brag about him to all their future recruits. It is the Junior Hockey Circle of Life. ;-)
Agreed however my point is if you are a team that has 2 games on a weekend and you are having a great season wth these goalies, are you really going to enjoy if they take him for a weekend just to sit on their bench?

Or can they just bring him up for Saturday's game play him, and then send him back to Navan on Sunday

I think the point is they have the ability to use Saari specifically because they don’t have a signed goalie. I don’t think they can use Saari now that they have Nelson signed. I think they have to use Nelson now.

I wish there was a place that we could check the rules

Here is a number that will make you grateful for the stability of the 67's organization - there have already been five coaches fired in the OHL this season. That's a quarter of the league, and it is still November. That is a brutal indictment of what junior hockey has become - a business. Patience, loyalty, player and character development - forget all that. It is about selling tickets and winning a few more games this week...

Is that a bad thing?

With that has come great emphasis on education, player support, player development, increased fan experience, and for those that choose to play pro hockey after Junior, they are already exposed to the business side of the game.

There are some negative tradeoffs, as you are suggesting (which I agree). However, as more money gets pumped into the sport/league, the money gets spent on advancement. The level of support for players on the 67’s today vs the level of support from 30 years ago is literally night and day. So, it is not all bad.

Part of it, though is teams fail to do due diligence when hiring. Look at Caputi as an example. It is the same in the CHL as it is in the NHL sometimes the players will not listen to the coach.

It's a fair point in that these kids get supported with much better facilities, access to medical professionals and trainers, etc. than they did 30 years ago, and with scholarship money now as well. With that definitely comes pressure to win, but the fact remains that we are dealing with teenagers still. Stability matters, as does education and character development. It just feels that the CHL has turned into the AHL except for 16-20 year olds. Sign of the times, I guess...

Definitely unfortunate, that is for sure. There are always tradeoffs…opportunity costs.

I think we also need to acknowledge this is a development league and that goes for coaches as well. The good ones move up and we need to give those that haven’t been in the league as head coaches an opportunity out of necessity. That can sometimes be troublesome because it is hard to get it right 100% of the time. Teams don’t draft and develop every player. It is also understood that they can’t always hire the right coaches too.

We are fortunate in Ottawa more recently. We did have a little trouble bridging out of the Kilrea era. We had our share of coaching changes. Maybe not as bad as some but we are definitely not immune from this issue either.

Nelson dressed tonight, u have ur answer. Might even get the start

The next few days will be a 3 in 3 weekend against the 9th (Oshawa)and 10th (Windsor) ranked teams. What to expect?

- I hope to see us roll 4 lines and see our youngsters get plenty of ice.
- I hope we as a team have gelled and can win against bottom-feeders.
- I'm looking foward to seeing the newly signed goalie play some trial minutes before [going back down (?)].

If we win all 3, I expect no changes to the lineup. If we don't, will this be an opportunity for Boyd to assess whether we have the depth necessary to develop towards a contending year next year, and take necessary steps?

2 wins by Ottawa but not exactly in convincing fashion. We're consistently widely outshot and outchanced; but, our defence is superb and goaltending outstanding (well done Max! in less than 18 hours). I think though that when we meet a team with teeth we will lose, likely badly.

The bad: Didn't see much of Horner or Hilton after the first. Horner made some good plays, then some really glaring gaffes - I guess that's not allowed at this level. And Hilton was just kinda there, chugging up and down the ice, not doing much negative or positive. He's blessed with size and if he doesn't use it aggressively he won't be here long.

The good: Korbler has some speed. The boys were looking for him on some stretch passes and he had a few (or near) breakaways. Well done and hope he keeps improving.

The troubling: Mews is a key part of this team and plays big minutes. But he doesn't seem to have any bursts of speed. It was most obvious in the overtime when 3 on 3 you are exposed and have to beat your guy. Luckily he's still young, has time to develop, and his other aspects are very good.

Bring on Windsor tomorrow (and Nelson?)
