Nelson was solid! Especially in the shootout. That became quite the duel haha.

Also love Cameron giving some kids behind your bench some gum after PD1 then pucks after PD2. Made there nights u could tell.

GL rest of the way!

Ottawa carried a lot of the play but you could tell the energy was low. They struggled when trying to get the puck to the net. Not a lot of fight for position.

Nelson did well for a 16 year old rookie in his first start. He needs to do a lot of work on covering up on those short rebounds. He seems very slow reacting to the pucks dropping from his chest to the ice In that 18” perimeter. He needs to swallow up those shots more. He seems to be the type of goalie that lets it hit him which is good provided you can get on the loose puck after.
hey he stopped the puck. I think the challenge is that the defence is used to Donoso and MacK to grab them, and they also need to learn to help Nelson.

Dude. He’s young and needs improvement in that area. No question. It is the responsibility of the goaltender to get a glove on the puck laying directly in front of him. We aren’t talking about a split second. We are talking a delayed response time compared to league average. If you can’t swallow the puck on the shot, you need to cover it up. He’s 16 so he will get an opportunity to improve.

Other than that, he seemed to be fine. It didn’t look like he had a slow glove hand or bad blocker or weak 5-hole. He didn’t seem to swim around the crease as much as Michelone So he seems positionally sound. It is only one game though so it is really hard to judge all of those things but it was a really good start for a 16 year old. That is a tough gig in this league at that age. Kudos to him.

Two PP goals (one with the pulled goalie) and one on a delayed penalty with the goalie out. So, effectively, no even strength goals agaisnt.

Two PP goals with Derek Smyth on the ice ... one in the last minute and a half. Both times he's standing in front of the crease looking totally lost. Why Cameron has this kid out there killing penalties in front of a rookie goaltender at the end of a one goal game is just beyond comprehension.

I totally agree, Cameron thinks his size and reach will help but if you are stationary like a post then it is a real disadvantage. Protect the front of the net, but on the tying goal in the 3rd the Sarnia player had time to miss and still get another shot that went in.

Just as a side note Foster and Dever must have been really feeling sick. Neither one played very much and they were not used in the shootout.

Gerrior also didn’t play much and when he did, he had ZERO drive. They had him on the 4th line.

No Foster, Barlas, or Stonehouse tonight. They are really limping right now. Only 17 skaters. We’ll see how much drive they have with the flu running rampant through the room. Michelone in net.

Gerrior, Smyth, Dever, Gardiner, Kelly all game time decisions could be a bench of 12/14 players by the sounds of it.

Maybe a dumb question but why wouldn’t they bring Hilton and Brady on this road trip? You’d think the team would know if a bunch of these guys weren’t feeling well before they departed Ottawa and would have planned accordingly.

Smyth and Sirman beaten on that one, surprise surprise.

For a supposedly flu ridden team, these guys are taking shifts longer than Phil Esposito in his prime.
