Something strange today. I googled chl import draft 2022 just to get the date of the draft. CHL.ca came up and when i opened it the draft order for july first appeared with players already listed up to pick 24 as if the draft was ongoing. I was at work so had to leave my tablet a few minutes and when I came back the names were gone and only the draft order remained. Can anybody explain this. Do they do the draft earlier and only announce it on july 1rst ?? For what it's worth i remember two things
1-the first pick was a Norwegian goalie
2- Ottawa picking 20th took Gustaf Kangas a swedish center
I checked him out 2005 born, 6'1" , 172 lbs.

Very weird!

My guess is they were probably testing it before posting and didn’t wipe out the names. My assumption is they test the editor to make sure when the draft is live the names populate once they are drafted/entered. They probably used some eligible as placeholders to test it.

This. They do this at some point before every draft just to make sure it works. There’s usually a test run the day before the draft too where team reps have to go in and “draft” random players to test the system.

Yeah that makes sense, i was just surprised when i saw the list.

That should not really be a surprise he had a good year and is age-eligible and a first-round pick. They usually get invited.

I hope he makes it

I also ass u me that Rohrer will get an invite to his National team

The interesting question will be Beck and Matier

Just looking at THE BLUES they have a lot of goalies. What do you think Boyd should do with Cranley if he does not crack the Blues roster somewhere. I really do not think we want to go into the season with 3 goalies.

Beck - I think he will get an opportunity provided he is healthy. He is responsible at both ends of the ice and can score goals. Pretty much a prototypical Forward for Team Canada
Matier - it will depend on whether there are other D-Men with similar attributes. I’d say he is on the radar but not sure he will get the invite. If I had to predict, I’d say he is on the outside looking in.

Cranley - He is a signed player. So, it is likely he will end up in the ECHL. The Blues have Five signed goalies and Cranley is the youngest but three of the signed goalies are one year older than Cranley. The Blues currently do not have an ECHL affiliate but it usually isn’t difficult to loan a goalie. My personal opinion is he should be returned to junior for another year of development. I think him moving to the Pro’s right now would be a really big mistake. But, if he were to return to Junior, I highly doubt it would be with Ottawa. I think he would start with the 67’s and Donoso but he’d get moved to another team to make room for MacKenzie ASAP and to open another OA spot up. There will be teams out there in need of goaltending. There always is. I don’t think moving Cranley for a 3rd or 4th round pick would be overly difficult if he were to be returned.

You might have missed the announcement about 10 days ago but both Beck and Matier have been invited to team canada development camp.

I meant actually making the roster in December for the tourney. It will come down to how many D-Men have the same attributes. Usually two guys like him make the team. There are 14 D-Men on the camp roster. If there is a shortage of his style players, he has a chance. If he is competing with 5 other guys for two spots? Maybe not so much.

Beck is a prototypical Team Canada player that can ply up and down the forward lines. I would be surprised if he didn’t make the squad.

A lot of what Matier does during the season will determine if he makes the team.

Yes they make cuts at camp but there are usually a couple of spots that are in flux depending on the regular season

I think it is less based on season performance than you think. Last summer Kerins was at the summer camp, then flew out of the gate leading the scoring race at various points in the early season, and still did not get the invite to the fall camp.

Realistically there are very few opportunities to play yourself onto that team if you are on the outside looking in.

Matier does have a few things going for him. First, he is a righty. He’s got size and can skate. He wouldn’t be counted on to score….a all. His job would be to shut down the opposition and play a strong physical game.

It will come down to what the other RH D-Men bring to the table.

What we don’t know is how well he can play with an elite LH D-Man that can score. Can he play as a #2 or is he strictly a 5-6?

Anybody heard anything about the 67's plans for the import draft? Are they passing and sticking with the two we have or are they picking at # 20. I expect them to pass at # 80.

Because of where Rohrer is projected to be picked, I imagine they will pick at 20 and see what happens. But, I haven’t heard anything either way.

How does it work I thought you could pick only if one of your imports was a first rounder or you had to waive one?

I have a feeling that they will take a homerun swing on a Forward. The team has plenty of depth but needs a game changer.

Gaidamak to Niagara could easily be a trade, as Ottawa has owned his rights for over a year.

Totally agree. We need that #1 center. Hopefully they target a high end 19/18 y.o. that can help us now. Wouldn't see the logic of a 17 y.o this year.

I’m not sure when the trade window opens but with the Memorial Cup Final tonight and the CHL Import draft being on Friday, I imagine the window opens tomorrow.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Ottawa moved Gaidamak. With such an early Import pick, Ottawa could snag a better player.

Although I agree that an 18 or 19 year old would be ideal, game breaking players in the age group typically don’t report to the OHL in any serious consistency. Most will already be NHL picks and would be eligible to play AHL.

In light of this, unless they have an agreement with an NHL team in advance, I expect to see a 17 year old drafted.
