That’s a lot of players without ice time.
I think one will be traded Laforme

3 will be sent to Jr

1/ Smyth by the time he gets back 100% healthy & gets his legs back up to speed he won’t be able to jump right into OHL action send him to a Jr team to play there when he comes back & bring him back next season.

2/ Horner send him back down to Hawkesbury. To be completely honest i am not even sure that Horner was not just up on an affiliate card to get a taste of the OHL before next season

3/ one of Marelli or Quick put one with OJS

Remaining would be
1 of Frankie Marelli/ Ethan Quick
Gavin Ewles
Caden Kelly

Frankie Marelli stays
Gavin Ewles toss up
Bradly Horner stays in Hawke
Derek Smyth toss up
Ethan Quick Says as spare
Caden Kelly should go to Jr B
Steven Laforme Junior B or give him his 1 game and let him go get ready for university

This is based on keeping 8 D. You are going to want to keep everyone fresh and get some of the young guys game time in case they are needed in the PO

I her people talking about selling next yearBUT with a returning case of

Luca Pinelli>Vinzenz Rohrer>Will Gerrior
Brady Stonehouse>Brad Gardiner> Beck
Cooper Foster Chris Barlas>>Jack Dever

Matthew Mayich > Jack Matier
Marelli > Ewle
Thomas Sirman > Henry Mews

plus 1 Euro
plus 1st and 2nd and 3rd round draft picks

I think we are going to be one of the best returning teams for 23-24.

If we had the facilities we might even be competitive enough to bid for the CUP

I don’t think Beck or Matier will return. Both most likely to turn pro. So I’ll give this a go without them.

looks good but I think you need to switch Gardiner and Barlas
I stillthink that is a pretty competitive team. Not sure I would be a seller next year

Matier and Beck returning.. you're dreaming. It's late though, we'll go with that. Got about a 10% chance of getting 1, 0% chance of getting both.

Yes, there will be plenty of solid returnees but you have to look at the big picture. 15 picks were just moved for 2 players this season. Next year the Mem comes to the O, so regardless of how they look to start, surely other teams will be emptying cabinets and creating powerhouses similar to the likes of Ottawa, Windsor, Peterborough this season. We won't be able to combat that.

In 2-3 years it could be go time again as we didn't get rid of any of our '06s and have strong '05s as well. In 2 years time, the team would be led by possible OAs Stonehouse (50/50), Rohrer (Unlikely as he will likely go pro before OA season), and Pinelli who will be drafted and fighting to be one of the league scoring leaders. Outside of those 3, Foster, Gardiner, Barlas, Kelly, Dever headline the forward candidates to take large strides and become leaders of that 2024-25 season. The back end should be really strong assuming high development in Mews, Marrelli, Mayich (OA). Sirman/Mackenzie would then round out that final OA spot and the other will be dealt + Gerrior is also likely be traded by end of next season. This all being under the assumption that none of these players move next season, which is a very likely possibility to re-build the cupboard.

2024/25
Pinelli - Gardiner - Stonehouse (OA)
Foster - Barlas - Kelly
Quick - X - Dever
X - X - X

Mayich (OA) - Mews
Marrelli - Ewles
X - Horner

Mackenzie (OA)
X

Pretty good start with 2 years of draft classes/trades in between.

I admit that I missed Matier and no he will not be back.
Beck is an unknown Calgary has not signed him and with the injuries he has had may want to see more from him or may just let him go back into the draft.

Either way this is a team that could find itself in first place again next year at this time.

If you are in first it becomes very hard to destroy your team.

If it turns out to be just picks for Mintyukov then that’s a great deal. Team is fully intact next year. 10 forwards and 7 defence plus both goalies return. I’m sure out of that bunch we will have some assets to free up at the deadline to recoup some of the picks used this year.

Pretty crazy really. As Barberpole said, we had this duo targeted pretty much from day one. We’ve talked about it at length.

You have to think James Boyd probably had the 2nd best deadline of any of the GMs this year. You have to tip your hat to Mississauga. Snagging both VanVolsen and Martone is quite the coup. They get my nod for best deadline. Boyd truly needs to be second without a doubt.

An .800 win% team adding the 2nd and 3rd leading scorers and not parting with a body is crazy good asset management. To have the picks to do it requires a lot of discipline.

For the record, there are lots of tickets available for Kamloops this year. They are around $650 each For the package. I looked last week on a lark….
I get the excitement on your part, but best deadline is very subjective. A few teams did very well imo.
Sarnia added Pastujov, Kyrou, Del Bel Belluz, and Del Mastro.
If Beck returns, the Petes may have got the best value in a trade.
It’s been a crazy trade season that is not yet finished.

It’s not just about what you add, it’s about what you subtract. Sarnia and Peterborough subtracted massive pieces that cannot be replaced by making some seller moves next year. When you trade once in every ten years type of first round picks, that is hard to recoup. You have to hit on the deeper picks and try to make it up in the aggregate. That can be tough.

Ottawa, on the other hand, can simply trade some bodies next season and recoup picks. They will just be of a different year for the most part. That is assuming they do that which I think is likely.

I put Mississauga #1 because they managed to turn three really good players into one really good player and two likely to be bonafide studs. I don’t remember a team EVER being able to do that. Snagging the #5 and #6 in a super deep, high end draft? Unheard of. Only time will tell how good VanVolsen, Martone and MacDonell will be.

I think the lesson learned in this deadline is to not go into a sellers market without a ton of draft picks to give yourself flexibility. It gives you more options.

Let’s see if Barrie can make some deals today with their picks.

I agree with Richmond’s exceptional selling, though no team may have ever sold as much.

(If) the Petes have Beck returned to sell next season, he is one of if not the best value had this deadline. It might not even be close really. Before Wright was returned, Beck was arguably the top defensive forward, face-off guy, producing 1.33 ppg with Schwindt & Veccia as line mates 5vs5.

The Sting & Petes managed to add much more than I thought possible. Add/improve is interchangeable.

LeDroit (JF Plante) reporting in an actual article that James Boyd has confirmed the deal is official between Saginaw and Ottawa. It is awaiting league approval.

Considering it is only a draft pick trade, there is no reason to assume the deal will not be approved. The League will confirm Ottawa owns the picks that have been used and then sign off on it. At that point we will see what the picks are.

The challenge next year is with so many teams participating in the Sellers market this season, it sets up a buyers market next season when so many teams are trying to recoup picks/players.

I like the Beck deal from the perspective that Peterborough can recoup assets but it is highly unlikely they recoup a comparable player to JVV. I don’t think the market will support that type of a return. They will get a good player and picks but probably not the calibre player they gave up.

I’m not saying Sarnia, Peterborough and Windsor didn’t do well. They snagged the other good players. But, I think Ottawa wins on the buyer side. To add the best OA and best D-Man available (no disrespect to DelMastro. I personally like him better) for picks that can easily be returned next year if they wish to do so is the best possible outcome for any team buying. Worse case scenario you only have to release 2 players next year to get your picks back which provides a reset year without a serious rebuild. Not losing any 16-17 year olds with such a good class of ‘05-‘06 players returning is an exceptional result. I really don’t think it is close. It would be a different story if Ottawa only traded picks and got “good” players like Harrison and Holmes. I’d then say they cheated out. But to get two dynamic players for picks easily replaced in the future is crazy.

James Boyd easily wins the Buyer side. Richmond easily wins the Seller side. I really don’t see an argument to be made otherwise.

What’s your cupboard look like for the next couple years?

What’s your cupboard look like for the next couple years?

We came into this deadline with seven 2nds, ten 3rds and six 4ths. I don’t usually look past that form a “cupboard” perspective. We used two 2nds, two 3rds and two 4ths on Morrison. That leaves us with five 2nds, eight 3rds and four 4ths. Total of 17 picks.

As of now, we have ten forwards, seven D-Men, and two goalies returning next season. We should still be set up well.

Looks like more trades today. As Granderson says, there’s a good chance we move a body or two and recoup a few middling picks.

EDIT:
three 2nds
four 3rds
two 4ths

for Mintyukov

Boyd did what he had to do to acquire Minty...the price was very steep, but worth it for one of (maybe the?) best players in the OHL.

Any possibility we trade Ewles or Laforme today to recoup a couple of (low) draft picks?

With our 6 defenseman, plus Marelli (7th D), plus Smyth when he returns, plus Horner...there is certainly a surplus.

Up-front, we have what I would deem to be 11 regular forwards, and Kelly and Dever in the mix for #12/13. Plus Quick, plus Laforme.

Walls and Plante are making kind of a big deal about us holding onto Niagara's 2nd round pick in this coming draft (likely to be very high in the 2nd round). Are we still buying?

You guys just got the best player in the league. Take good care of him.
He was so fun to watch, kid has all the tools and now you have the 2 of the top 3 scorers in the OHL. As @Kingpin794 said the best player in the league is a 67. I'll be a 67 fan come playoffs. He will do some head scratching when he just dominates a game. All the best on your quest for a Memorial Cup.
