If we learned this week that Boucher is done for the year, would anyone be shocked? This is feeling a lot like the Josh Norris situation with the Sens, where they tried rehab but the shoulder couldn't stand up to the rigors of actual game play.
No, and if I were a betting man I’d place a wager on us never seeing him again in a 67s uniform, sadly.
Hopefully Barlas and Sirman aren’t dealing with anything too serious and we get those bodies back in the lineup next weekend.
Some other random observations:
- Fortunately, we have a lot of guys playing really good hockey right now. Gerrior has been awesome, Mayich, Gardiner, Pinelli, Stonehouse, Constantini, Tolnai. Lots of guys upping their games recently. Foster in particular was great yesterday; I think he was a healthy scratch for a game or two, so good to see the push back on his part.
- Beck is coming around. He was the best player on the ice, imo, during the mid-week game against Kingston. Getting good looks, nice release on his shot, good playmaking (and all without Morrison). As we expected, and finally.
- Mews and Marrelli have settled down and have been a good #3 pairing for us in recent games. Having Smyth back on the blue line to take shifts with them and provide a more physical look to our defense has been a stabilizing force on our back-end.
- I have no problem giving our top line players a night off from time to time. Rohrer looks like he could use a game off, as could Tolnai and Constantini. No use pushing it too hard down the stretch, as that tends to be when injuries happen. Our remaining slate of games isn't what I would call high-difficulty or high-importance. However, there is only so much Cameron can do with the repeated injuries. Ewles was taking shifts at the wing yesterday. Not ideal.
- I think we can win without Boucher. We may need to. In recent weeks, we've won a series of big games without him. Sarnia on the road, Peterborough on the road, North Bay at home. Obviously he'd be a big part of our lineup in an ideal situation, but the team has shown the resiliency to win without some key players in the lineup.
- When Gardiner, Barlas and Gerrior are healthy and playing together, look out. That is one hell of a puck pursuit line.
- Big negatives for me are: 1) the PP, which we've discussed ad nauseum on here, and 2) their puzzling inability to clear the d-zone regularly. They get hemmed in constantly and bleed scoring chances. Too many drop passes, and cute plays behind the net - usually in the first period. There was one shift yesterday where Saginaw was going through a line change, and the man with the puck (Matier I think) made a drop pass to his defense partner who fumbled the puck, allowing Saginaw to get in on the forecheck and cycle deep in our d-zone for a full shift. Sloppy.
Overall I like the team and still think we have a good chance of making a deep playoff run. Cameron needs to work on the PP and d-zone breakouts imo. The PP solution could/should be as simple as having Mintyukov and Matier at the point and have them blast away with Stonehouse/Rohrer in front of the net. Not every scoring chance has to be a cross-ice one-timer. Get back to basics!
