I was at the game today and while it was great victory by the 67s in the shootout over the Spirit, the 67s PP needs more work especially on the 5 on 3 in OT shooting the puck and crashing the net instead of making these fancy passes looking for the perfect play to shoot and score. No wonder why it went from the #1 pp in the league to 6th. Hope the PP improves in their remaining 8 games or they could be in trouble come playoff time.

Agreed. Matier went from running PP and putting up points to not even being on the ice for a 5 on 3 in OT? How he was not on the ice on left side is crazy.
Anyone have the PP numbers from before the Minty acquisition to now ?
There will lie the point of this post.

The announcers for the game said something about Ottawa's PP being near the top early in the season, but now they sit 6th at 23.3%. A bunch of players have dropped off. Rohrer, Costantini, Beck. Adding top end scorers does that. It would be hard to push Morrison and Mintyukov down the depth chart, but that can be hard to accept for Matier as well, who has only scored 3 goals in 2023. One guy who seems to score when you need it is Gerrior. Add Pinelli, who shoots the puck a lot.

ou can't really say Beck dropped off as he did not [play most of the year.

I have said it earlier and will say it again. Ottawa needs to run 2 PP units

Call them after the deadline with Beck Gerrior Morrison Minty and Constatini

Before the deadline

Pinelli Tolnai Rohrer

Matier and Smyth

Play them a minute each problem then becomes the other teams as they can not put their top PK guys out for the full 2 minutes and most teams donot have 2 PK units

It will be interesting to see how we handle the last week or so of the regular season. It looks like we will have the Eastern Conference wrapped up in a few more games, and likely the OHL regular season title a game or two after that. We won't be playing for anything in that last week. Do you go full out, or sit out your go-to players for a couple of games?

He's played almost exactly the same number of games this year as last. With 8 goals this year and 22 last season, he's having a hard time scoring. His shot % is very low at 7% (most of his teammates are at about 15%.) It isn't that he's not working at it or trying, but something has definitely changed. Nagging injury? Changed line? Less PP time? I don't know but I think he could be key to a long playoff run.

No doubt his goals are down but his point total/per game is essentially the same. So I'm not overly worried as long as somebody scores from his playmaking. I will agree you would expect increased point production just from normal junior progression but taking into account the time he's missed the last 3 years it's not surprising. I think he's very close to bringing it to the next level and you're right we'll need it in the playoffs especially with Boucher being a ?.

If we learned this week that Boucher is done for the year, would anyone be shocked? This is feeling a lot like the Josh Norris situation with the Sens, where they tried rehab but the shoulder couldn't stand up to the rigors of actual game play.

No, and if I were a betting man I’d place a wager on us never seeing him again in a 67s uniform, sadly.

Hopefully Barlas and Sirman aren’t dealing with anything too serious and we get those bodies back in the lineup next weekend.

Some other random observations:

- Fortunately, we have a lot of guys playing really good hockey right now. Gerrior has been awesome, Mayich, Gardiner, Pinelli, Stonehouse, Constantini, Tolnai. Lots of guys upping their games recently. Foster in particular was great yesterday; I think he was a healthy scratch for a game or two, so good to see the push back on his part.

- Beck is coming around. He was the best player on the ice, imo, during the mid-week game against Kingston. Getting good looks, nice release on his shot, good playmaking (and all without Morrison). As we expected, and finally.

- Mews and Marrelli have settled down and have been a good #3 pairing for us in recent games. Having Smyth back on the blue line to take shifts with them and provide a more physical look to our defense has been a stabilizing force on our back-end.

- I have no problem giving our top line players a night off from time to time. Rohrer looks like he could use a game off, as could Tolnai and Constantini. No use pushing it too hard down the stretch, as that tends to be when injuries happen. Our remaining slate of games isn't what I would call high-difficulty or high-importance. However, there is only so much Cameron can do with the repeated injuries. Ewles was taking shifts at the wing yesterday. Not ideal.

- I think we can win without Boucher. We may need to. In recent weeks, we've won a series of big games without him. Sarnia on the road, Peterborough on the road, North Bay at home. Obviously he'd be a big part of our lineup in an ideal situation, but the team has shown the resiliency to win without some key players in the lineup.

- When Gardiner, Barlas and Gerrior are healthy and playing together, look out. That is one hell of a puck pursuit line.

- Big negatives for me are: 1) the PP, which we've discussed ad nauseum on here, and 2) their puzzling inability to clear the d-zone regularly. They get hemmed in constantly and bleed scoring chances. Too many drop passes, and cute plays behind the net - usually in the first period. There was one shift yesterday where Saginaw was going through a line change, and the man with the puck (Matier I think) made a drop pass to his defense partner who fumbled the puck, allowing Saginaw to get in on the forecheck and cycle deep in our d-zone for a full shift. Sloppy.

Overall I like the team and still think we have a good chance of making a deep playoff run. Cameron needs to work on the PP and d-zone breakouts imo. The PP solution could/should be as simple as having Mintyukov and Matier at the point and have them blast away with Stonehouse/Rohrer in front of the net. Not every scoring chance has to be a cross-ice one-timer. Get back to basics!

Agree with most of your post except their inability to clear the d-zone. Yes it happens but not in a major way imo, heck they are by far the best defensive team in the league. When they do get hemmed in they don't tend to give up a lot of quality chances due to the tenaciousness of their puck pursuit. Combine that with two good goalies and I don't see it as much of an issue...jmo. Good point on Matelli/Mews they seem to have found another gear and are not getting exposed as much as a month ago. For the playoffs though still prefer at least Smyth (who they are easing back in) on the third pairing ideally with Sirman.

Perhaps I'm just nit-picking or focusing too much on the d-zone breakouts, just something I've noticed and its become a sore point for me because we have the talent to execute much better in our own zone but sometimes just aren't able to clear the zone efficiently. Donoso and MacKenzie are most oftentimes able to pick up their teammates and clean-up mistakes, and I certainly agree that the 67s have high-quality goaltending. The defenseman are typically able to limit chances to the perimeter, and as I said the Mews/Marrelli pairing has been improved as of late and having Smyth back helps a lot too.

Dave Cameron did his weekly radio hit on TSN 1200 today. Good news - Logan Morrison is fine, and maybe could have played Saturday. "Out of an abundance of caution" and all that good stuff. He'll be back next game.

Tyler Boucher? Almost no information other than the fact that he is being checked out by the Senators doctors and trainers. It was all very cryptic - if Cameron knew anything, he sure wasn't sharing it...

Anything on Barlas or Sirman?

I think their is a fairly good chance that we have seen the last of Boucher, and if not will he be a positive factor anyways. Looks very tentative so shoulder must still bother him quite a bit.

I hope Barlas and Sirman get back soon so they can get some real playing time before the playoffs. Also will give Cameron time to tinker a bit with the makeup of the team for the playoffs.

JF Plante reporting that Boucher is in fact done for the season.
Sigh - you could see that coming a mile away. I could hear it in Cameron's voice yesterday.

Obviously this is a blow, but not completely insurmountable. The big deadline acquisitions, Minty and Morrison, are playing extremely well, we have depth in goal and balanced scoring. Getting Jack Beck going in these last few games would be big. The OHL is wide open this year - it's not like there's some fire breathing dragon waiting for us in the Western Conference. Let's do this...

Unfortunately there is a great conversation going on with the . We have tried to figure out how to add more people to the conversation but are unable to so here is a copy of Sirius thoughts that copmbine my and One Man Gang 67 thoughts
Agree with most of this Beast. They have built a good team who is performing very well but I agree with OMG that we need to adjust for Boucher ( we don't have a choice). Most of these guys have played together so it's not about blowing things up as you put it, it's about finding our best combos for the playoffs. I would suggest the following as I really liked the few shifts Rohrer took with Beck/Mo.
Beck/Mo/Rohrer
Pinelli/Tolnai/Stoney
Foster/GardinerGerrior
Barlas/ 4 man rotation/Dever

Mayich/Matier
Cos/Minty
Smyth/Sirman
MewsMarelli rotate as seventh D.

So my thought is we rotate the 3 centers and Vinnie on the fourth line. For the D I don't care how good Mews/Marelli have been I want size/experience on that third pairing. For my money it's SmythSirman. Mews can contribute on the second PK.
One last thought I know I'm putting a lot of firepower on that first line but I do feel our second and third line will have enough easier match ups to give us enough scoring.

Everything Cameron has done this season to-date suggests that he'll play Sirman at forward, and dress both Mews and Marrelli. If our 18th skater comes down to Marrelli or Dever, I think Cameron will dress Marrelli as 7th defenseman and rotate him in with Mews and Smyth depending on game situation or opponent.

I see Dever (who I think has been quite good, honestly) and Kelly getting very minimal games in once the playoffs come around. Down the stretch they will play more with Barlas and Sirman out, but hopefully both of them are back soon so that Cameron can set his lineup before the playoffs.

Mews has seven points in his last ten games - he looks like he is getting his second wind, so to speak, and his talent level speaks for itself. I think it's tough to leave a kid with that much skill sitting in the stands when the game today is so much about speed and skill. Manage his ice time and situations appropriately and I think he'll be a solid contributor in the playoffs...

Both Mews and Marrelli went through a rough stretch after the trade deadline but have definitely settled down in the last few weeks, and as you pointed out Mews has been really good offensively. Maybe having Smyth back has helped, and maybe coaching/putting both players in better position to succeed.

I don't think Ottawa has anyone that's underwhelming right now and there are no real holes in the lineup, even with Boucher out. Lots of guys trending upwards too, and a weekend with 6 possible points coming up. Would be good to lock up home ice advantage for the entirety of the playoffs and rest some of our guys before the playoffs.

London lost tonight, so they are even a point behind North Bay now. As of right now, we just need to go 4-4 in the last eight to sew up home ice throughout the playoffs, and that's without help. It's looking pretty certain that our last few games will be simply about getting guys healthy for the playoffs...

I think mews marelli and ewle will be given a chance against Oshawa in the first round. Then it will be their play that decides who gets how much ice
