Now that I've calmed down a little from the excitement, I want to (try to somewhat) reassure Sens fans. That package may not look like much, but it's largely comprised of useful pieces.

Tierney is young and could be an option long term at #2/3C as a tweener. He's a pretty good playmaker with speed. DeMelo isn't good and I'm just glad to be rid of him. He's a placeholder, nothing more. Norris is a solid if unspectacular prospect. He won't light the world on fire, but could grow into a role as a middle six role player. Balcers is the real prize. He's got world class talent, but is obviously a question mark. A 1st and 2nd don't really need much explanation.

All in all, there's no elite talent (outside of a longshot in Balcers), but it's a big package of mostly useful pieces.

People have been saying this for years and it hasn't happened yet. If they extend Karlsson, it won't happen anytime soon either.

Was Thornton always 39y, or Pavelski 34y, or Burns 33y when those comments were made? No, they were in their primes.

The superstars of the team are getting old and theyll be struggling to rebuild the prospect pool in the following years.

Mean while in Ottawa, I saw a ad on indeed looking for a GM, all you needed was you high school diploma and be willing to work the convince stands. And in San Jose people are donating any gold jewelry to build a statue of Doug Wilson.

I actually don't think Duchene liked Karlsson at all, so I doubt him being traded bears any relevance to him signing or not.

He was probably hoping for something in return though. Right now he's looking at Stone and saying, "So how are we going to score ALL the goals for the next three years?"

The deal also includes two conditional picks:
  • Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  • If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.
Why would a conditional pick, based on reaching the Stanley Cup Final, need lottery protection? Doesn't that go without saying?
they would get the 1st in 2021 if Karlsson re-signs and Sharks make the SCF. In 2021, Sharks could be outside the playoffs.

But these are bad conditions. Sens got murdered in this deal.

Inner conference deals usually do require a steeper return...It's fair to think that SJ would pay less than TB for a player who would have to be dealt in the same division...That being said this is a brutal return.
We paid more for McDonagh. Ottawa got less for arguably the best defensman of the modern era.

They have to go all in, this season.

Not super surprised, a multi of relatively minor pieces, couple first and 2nd. Good start to rebuilt without getting any big sexy piece back

I know when I trade a hall of famer in his prime, I'm looking for NHL players in return and nothing less!
I expect as much knee-jerk from a trade of this magnitude (and I think it's symptomatic that you ignore the other facets of the return to make this quip). But Melnyk wasn't dealing from a position of strength, he could risk losing Karlsson for nothing. Sens fans, for all that they don't have to be thankful for, should be thankful that at the very, very least, Karlsson didn't walk away as a UFA.
