San jose could trade him for 3 times the price they bought him for or sign him long-term :laugh:

It's a lot of good pieces coming back, but I really thought in the end Ottawa would get that one piece like Glass to make it worth while. Sens fans probably aren't too happy about this return.

Man. I do feel for some of the Sens fans. It's clear to me keeping him out of the East was more important than the actual return. It's gonna suck hitting rock bottom this year without the first, but hopefully they can start to build themselves back up.

I literally don't really follow hockey trading as closely as I should I guess but this sounds like one of the biggest trades in NHL history to me, is that something you guys would agree with?
It’s definitely going to be one of the most memorable.

I hope someone asks Melnyk if he refused to trade him to the East. If so, I can understand why Tampa whiffed. If not, I have NO IDEA what Tampa just did.
Look at what we sent to the Rangers for McDonagh. Two good, safe NHL-level prospects in Howden and Hajek, a first, and a conditional second, plus a roster player.

THAT deal blows what the Sens just got out of the water for an inferior player. I refuse to believe we didn't have a better deal on the table for EK at the deadline than what we paid for McDonagh.

Not like it matters at all.

If I'm reading this correctly, the Sharks have to re-sign Karlsson AND make the final for the Sens to get a second 1st rounder? So they can lose in the conference final and still re-sign him and the Sens get nothing else? Wow.

At least you helped clear some of that cap for them, Dorion. Enjoy Boedker.
The second condition is that if they trade him to the east this year they have to give up a 1st round

Foolish. Ty Dellandrea better end up a prime Mike Richards.

Also should mention, he's like our 4th or 5th best prospect.

Heiskanen
Robertson
Hintz
Dellandrea maybe.

We could've had a defense core of:

Lindell-Klingberg
Methot-Karlsson
Heiskanen-Honka

While I agree Ottawa did horrible, I also am not sure if I like this for San Jose.

If he re-signs, this would be another robbery of Ottawa by Wilson, but If he doesn't re-sign, that's a lot to give up for one year. Even with Karlsson do you have San Jose in your top 5 favorites? Because I don't.
Although the return is horrendous, Tierney is a decent player. I look at their forwards and am not impressed at all.

But that top 4 defense. Sheesh. They just took the top spot from the Predators. Like by a mile.

If this is purely for a rental it makes it a little more understandable I guess.

tbh its not that bad considering its an expiring deal. Balcers and norris are decent prospects. One is a 1st rounder and the other is developing nicely. Then they get another first and 2nd round pick condition that could turn into another 1st. Thats 3 first rounders for a rebuilding team. Ottowa is in better shape than montreal, especially if they can get jack hughes.

Unlikely Sens get Hughs if they can't get their own 1st rounder this year.

hehehe

As for people saying "best case scenario is they have a 20% chance at Hughes"

While yes, that is true. However the whole thing is just a gallon of gravy. We make the playoffs and we have a top pick with the potential for Hughes and the top guys. We miss the playoffs and we have two picks with the potential for Hughes.

Even if you don't get Hughes, you add a top-5 pick to a roster full of good young talent, built around an emerging star player and Art Ross contender. Go Aves.

Ah, so if SJS makes the playoffs, which they will, BUF gets their 1st in 2019, and OTT gets the 1st in 2020.

I missed that 1 of the 2nds was in 2019 and not 2020, so at least OTT gets that this year
Buffalo has the first no matter what. When Kane signed there, it was bumped to a 1. The question I have is whether or not the pick is still lottery protected now because they can't push it to 2020 because they gave it to Ottawa. I mean, no chance they are a lottery team this year, but I'm just curious.

Sens fans keep saying the AVs only have a 18% chance for Hughes, but a stacked draft of Centres. Same odds the following season, 2020 - Lafrenière is a Winger, teams build around C or D.

They lose again if AVs get Hughes and Sens Lafrenière.

Lafrenière is in Crosby-McDavid category.

There's probably something more going on here. It must be common knowledge that Karlsson intends to hit the UFA market or intends to sign with a specific club that won't pay out anything in a trade.

So SJ is essentially paying the equivalent of two 1sts and two 2nds for a player that is all but guaranteed to be a rental. If that's the case, this trade makes a lot more sense, and Ottawa actually does alright.
