Any news about a NMC?

Love the term of this deal and AAV is about what I expected. Solid deal here I love it.

Alfredsson, Heatley, and Spezza all left because either he wasn't willing to either pay them what they were worth or he'd shipped off one of the others because of this and left them with less and less options.
 really ?
well thanks for providing us with shocking news :shakehead

I was really expecitng 5x5.5, so this is great.

Hoffman put up the numbers again last year so the "flash in the pan" theory is minimized.

The dude has skill and is a top 6 goal scorer. Definitely worth 5AAV.

The deals that set the market were Forsberg (6x6) and Schwartz (5x5.3). So it makes a lot of sense that they got good market value.

Nice narrative, too bad it's false.

There isn't an ounce of truth in any of that. Each of those situations was unique.

Alfredsson's situation got messed up rather badly however he and Melnyk have obviously reconciled their differences given he works for the franchise.

Spezza wanted a change of scenery and was granted a trade at his request

Heatley - there are lots of rumours surrounding what transpired here and I am not going to get in to any of them - Heatley demanded out, he got what he wanted, and in hindsight it worked out well for the team.

Seriously, Alfie and Spezza pretty much didn't want to go through another couple of rebuild years. Alfie had 1-2 years left to his career and wanted one last chance at the cup with his Swedish friends in Detroit. Money was undoubtedly part of the issue but none of us know how much for sure. I'm convinced one last shot at the cup was his main reason for leaving. Spezza had been a Superstar for the Sens most of his career. He was the whipping boy in Ottawa most of his career also because of his style of play, getting the C just intensified it. Don't think he enjoyed his year as Captain and wanted to get a chance at a cup and change of scenery. He was open with the team and they traded him for peanuts instead of losing him to Free Agency for nothing.

Heatley is a d-bag and his trade request ended up being a blessing in disguise for the Sens.

Great deal! Excited to see what he can do playing in the top two lines consistently after scoring 29 goals playing games all over the place, including the 4th line.

Crickets from all the leaf fans who said the sens wouldnt pay him. Keep em coming fellas you guys are batting about 1000% right now between this and stamkos. Please keep the Karlsson is going to leave the sens threads coming... Not that I am worried but lets make it a sure thing!

This is a good deal for both sides. If he puts up close to 30 goals a season for this contract, he's going to really cash in on a 6-7 year deal when this deal is up.

That's a giant pant load of a post. Please tell me you were kidding.

But...but...people said we didn't have the money to sign him, what gives? :scared:

Sens are a budget team with an internal budget as well, even I can tell you that as a Habs fan, I can even give you proof such as Melnyk quotes. As for them not having money go sign Hoffman, I doubt anyone knew the answer to that...

Meh, no need to single out other fan bases. There were a fair few of our own who were saying the same. There hasn't been any legitimate reason to think a deal like this wouldn't happen. I thought it would take another week, so I'm happy it got done earlier than I expected.

Melnyk quotes are always fun...but what impact has this had on the team? The answer being - the Sens are just careful with their money, and its GMs have become more creative in how they structure trades/deals.

The internal budget hasn't been a hindrance yet to the team's trajectory.

Yep, and the philosophy of the budget is to extend our core pieces and compliment them with smart depth signings/trades/draft picks. The budget philosophy tends to get distorted into a cheapness narrative however, where every core piece that the Sens need to extend is gonna bolt to a more glamorous market. These markets tend to be original 6 markets and it's a neat coincidence that original 6 fans are the main ones to propagate this narrative.

The issue is many of his quotes are taken out of context.
