I don't like this at all, but I was literally looking at data showing how integral it is for Ottawa to have the Stützle/Norris/Pinto combo together when I saw the news. Might as well share what I found since it's relevant here
Record this year with all 3 in the lineup:
Home: 14-6-2
Away: 12-8-3
Overall: 26-14-5
There was 1 game in there where Norris was injured early, Jan 21st at MSG. We got smoked 5-0.
Records with one or more not in the lineup:
Home: 3-3-0
Away: 2-8-0
Overall: 5-11-0
Pinto hurt his shoulder in the first Tampa game before the break, only playing 3 mins. Norris was already out, so they were down both guys for that game, and of course the next 4 which were against Tampa again, Florida, Montreal, and Winnipeg. That was the worst streak of the season, going 0-5 and getting outscored 23-8.
Of course this can be explained by lack of depth and it might not matter specifically who is out - when you have top players missing, it hurts. But man, it made such a huge difference having a pair of centers in the 2/3 slots that were very good 2 way players, especially on the road. You struggle to get the right players out so that someone like Pinto can be the shut down option, but when you have Norris as well it's not a problem because he can do it too.
So the trade itself? I'm not a fan of Cozens and the money saved is something but not much really. On the surface my initial reaction was major disappointment and this could blow up in our faces.
However, Buffalo is a shit show so Cozens might be underperforming, Norris does have an extensive injury history, and we need a center that can be a playmaker. And from Buffalo's end, they've already got Tage as a goal scoring C, so why would they want another that's overpaid and injury prone? And Norris' key attribute that got him $8M is his shot. I have barely seen it since the DeBrincat trade. I don't know if his shoulder has affected it, he's lost confidence, or other teams caught on and have eliminated that as an option. But even with that last point, they don't even set the PP up for it to be an option anymore.
I don't know, we'll see. Maybe this revitalizes both players, maybe this is a better fit for us. We also get cap relief now with JBD gone as well. Well be interesting to watch how it plays out.
If they miss the playoffs though, I'm going to cite this as THE reason lol. I was confident with the remaining schedule that if those 3 C's stayed healthy, Ottawa was a lock to make it.
I can also be happy we received a pick back instead of dealing more...
