I don't like this at all, but I was literally looking at data showing how integral it is for Ottawa to have the Stützle/Norris/Pinto combo together when I saw the news. Might as well share what I found since it's relevant here

Record this year with all 3 in the lineup:
Home: 14-6-2
Away: 12-8-3
Overall: 26-14-5

There was 1 game in there where Norris was injured early, Jan 21st at MSG. We got smoked 5-0.

Records with one or more not in the lineup:
Home: 3-3-0
Away: 2-8-0
Overall: 5-11-0

Pinto hurt his shoulder in the first Tampa game before the break, only playing 3 mins. Norris was already out, so they were down both guys for that game, and of course the next 4 which were against Tampa again, Florida, Montreal, and Winnipeg. That was the worst streak of the season, going 0-5 and getting outscored 23-8.

Of course this can be explained by lack of depth and it might not matter specifically who is out - when you have top players missing, it hurts. But man, it made such a huge difference having a pair of centers in the 2/3 slots that were very good 2 way players, especially on the road. You struggle to get the right players out so that someone like Pinto can be the shut down option, but when you have Norris as well it's not a problem because he can do it too.

So the trade itself? I'm not a fan of Cozens and the money saved is something but not much really. On the surface my initial reaction was major disappointment and this could blow up in our faces.

However, Buffalo is a shit show so Cozens might be underperforming, Norris does have an extensive injury history, and we need a center that can be a playmaker. And from Buffalo's end, they've already got Tage as a goal scoring C, so why would they want another that's overpaid and injury prone? And Norris' key attribute that got him $8M is his shot. I have barely seen it since the DeBrincat trade. I don't know if his shoulder has affected it, he's lost confidence, or other teams caught on and have eliminated that as an option. But even with that last point, they don't even set the PP up for it to be an option anymore.

I don't know, we'll see. Maybe this revitalizes both players, maybe this is a better fit for us. We also get cap relief now with JBD gone as well. Well be interesting to watch how it plays out.

If they miss the playoffs though, I'm going to cite this as THE reason lol. I was confident with the remaining schedule that if those 3 C's stayed healthy, Ottawa was a lock to make it.

I can also be happy we received a pick back instead of dealing more...

I really like this trade for Ottawa. I've wanted Norris gone for awhile because of the injury risk that would be hanging over the team for the next 5 years.

Well...I'm sad. I've been a Norris fan since we got him. Felt he was always undervalued, coming over in the EK trade and then steutzle being the flashy new toy. Love his 200ft game. Although we as fans cringe when he gets hit, I think the shoulder issue is behind him.
Buffalo got themselves a legit 1C. Not an easy thing to trade for. Natural goal scorers like him are hard to find. He's clutch.
The hope is cozens gels with Timmy and Timmy's defensive strides can cover up for cozens. We get reliability in terms of games played.

Rantannen to Dallas with Stankoven and 2 first round picks to Carolina.
Stankoven has almost the exact same stats as Dylan Cozens. Those two 1st round picks will most likely be outside of the lottery.

This is a huge move for Dallas. I bet Carolina is kicking themselves for trading Necas.

I liked Norris. Defended him on here many times.

Do we become too attached to our players?

The whistles go away in the playoffs. Less PPs. We're 30th in 5 on 5 goals. Does a C that is a better play maker get more out of his wingers than Norris?

Staios showed with this deal that he's capable of long-term thinking and planning, in stark contrast to our previous GM.

I don't think Cozens is as good as Norris is right now, but he's younger, cheaper and doesn't carry the same kind of significant injury risk.

Another shoulder surgery and I don't know if Norris will be capable of hitting 30G again. At a 8.6M average salary for the remainder of his deal, it's a major risk to an organization that will likely be running on an internal budget in coming seasons, at least until there's a new downtown arena up and running.

Getting the Sabres to throw in a 2nd is a bonus.

100% This. Every time Norris got hit or went down, I was scared he would be hurt again. The biggest ability for a player is availability.
he miss a lot of games this year? The fact is we got worse so the owner could save cash, not cap cash.
it is what it is

Very surprised they did this trade while we are fighting for a playoff spot. Saying this, Cozen is younger and a little cheaper than Norris (we needed cap space), has potential to keep improving and is signed for years to come and he doesn't have the injury history Norris has. As mentioned by others, Brady best buddy gone might piss him off. He was already clearly not happy with the US anthem booing, did he already asked to be traded or not, only Staios knows, but this might just be the start of a bigger shake up of the core ... not saying this is what I want, but it could be. Let's see if more moves get done today.
Brady's overall reaction will speak greatly of his future with this team. It is fine, perfectly ok to be temporarily upset, to react emotionally at the loss of a close teammate. I get and respect that. That said, if he gets pissy or bitter about it, as the players love to say, "Hey, this is just business!". From my perspective he is already on thin ice :-) after chastising fans for booing pissy play, his whole USA number 1 thingy, not at all appreciating why Canadian fans (his!) might be a wee bit pissed off with the USA right now. If you can't effing grasp that then it says more about you than it does fans. I have suspected for a long time that with Keith's undue influence (interference) and what already happened with Matthew, it is only a matter of time before he bails anyway. I would be fine if the Sens traded him at his peak for buckets of assets now rather than allowing him to get anywhere near control with an NMC. He does that and Sens lose big time! For the sake of the team I want them to retain some modicum of control. Just my 2 cent personal opinion... Hey, you get what you pay for!

Cozens needs to work out on Centre. We need that 1-2-3 punch in the middle of the ice.
He will. There are some trade offs in the details but I like what we managed to get for Norris after apparently trying to move him for a while.

I have been a Cozens fan since the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky... He was a two way machine. I think Green will bring that out of him. I also wanted him over Dach in the 2019 draft. We got a good player.. Nothing wrong with liking Norris ... people shitting on Cozens should give it a couple beats and see how he fits in here.
We are not replacing a star with shite.

Don't start with this shit. It's about cap space. There's no proof that ownership prioritizes cash over winning.
ya getting a second is the fact that both sides know who got the better player. Don't swear about it, its a done deal
1 million in cap and a guy that is worth less..... big help

Just for the record IE. Cozens not being the same after the Hathaway fight. Not really true, he was bad all year up to that point and threw a bit of a fit at the end of a particular game. Chose the wrong guy in Hathaway and was in a full visor for a month.

The more I read posts from this thread the more I tend to agree with you.

If Staios has been trying to move Norris for a while then I am glad that he waited to get a comparable player who can fill that 2nd line centre role.

I am being optimistic but if he can become that 2-way player you saw in 2018 then I will be happy with this trade. I am betting on him being boosted by playing on a better team with better line-mates, as well as not being bogged down by the losing culture in Buffalo.
