I realize yet another first-time head coach has people concerned and rightfully so, but I also don't want them to go and get a veteran guy just because he's a veteran. So long as he does what Hackett failed miserably in doing right off the bat (assemble a capable staff of assistants who can help a first-time HC) then that's an encouraging first step.

Would be nice if they could somehow entice Munchak back, but that bridge may already be burned.

Of course none of this has even been announced yet so who knows.

Hilarious watching all those Cowboys fans lose their shit and wreck TVs and burn jerseys for no good reason.

Newsflash: Jerry Jones is a terrible owner and executive who, despite his inexhaustible wealth, can't manage to put together anything better than a mediocre roster. The sooner Dallas fans come to realize that, the better.
Yeah I can’t stand Jerry Jones either, he’s a dick. I think he’s a case of one of those owners who doesn’t know enough to be effective (most don’t) but has such a big ego he can’t hand off the responsibilities to someone who does.

Jerry has problems getting good coaches, but the Cowboys roster has consistently been pretty good over the years. Cowboys are consistently one of the best drafting teams in the league. People criticize Dak/Romo, but those guys were actually great finds in the fourth round/UDFA. If anything the issue is that the Cowboys keep finding talent and haven't needed to find an elite qb high in the draft. No QB's taken in the first round since 1989, only one taken in the top 100 picks since then.

Cowboys have some flaws on their roster, but they also have a top five-ish offensive line and an elite pass rush. Those two traits will win you games at the NFL level.

"Pretty good" is mediocre in the NFL.

That's the problem with Jones. If he was Matt Millen, he would've either had high draft picks and/or at least felt enough outside pressure to remove himself from day-to-day operations. He's merely been okay at the job, so the Cowboys year in, year out are one of those teams that seemingly disappoints. The reality is, that's a team built precisely to do just that--make the playoffs and not much else.

I agree Rolen > Helton. I thought Rolen was one of the best defensive guys at 3B in a while, and the hall finally seems to be giving defense some appreciation (especially now that there’s actual worthwhile defensive statistics available). Along those lines, Andrew Jones definitely needs to get in. Todd was awesome defensively too but 3B is way tougher to play.

I thought the Rockies should have done the deal sending Helton to the Sox back in like 2009 (or whenever that was). Ironically if that deal had gone through Todd would probably be ordering his jacket size today.

A lot to hate about this.

1) first time head coach
2) yet another defensive guy
3) a defensive guy that runs a different scheme (4-3) which means we will likely convert which means the defense goes through a transition and possibly a step back
4) Evero (3-4) definitely gone under this scenario. Probably was gone anyways but this hire is nail in the coffin.
5) I guess Shaw as OC? Meh. His west coast style will fit but his offenses really tailed off in the end at Stanford.
I don't know if Ryans will insist on the 4-3 and then wholesale change the D. The talent is not there for 4-3 anytime soon, all the pass rush disappears if that's insisted upon. Sounds like Evero might get an HC anyways, not worried about that but I could definitely see him sticking around if its Ryans. I sense Ryans is more of a leader than the guys who made their way off specialized skill sets. He might really be more in the mold of Mike Tomlin where its all about responsibility and putting guys into position to succeed instead of trying to dictate a system as we have seen too much of on the offense. I just cringe thinking how much better we could have been if Fangio wouldn't have kept Shurmur around when it was obvious his system wasn't working.

And unlike most I'm definitely pro-Shaw. As an alum of another Pac-12 school I have always respected his teams and what he brought to a team that had no business being as good as they were. Stanford gets little elite talent in the skill positions outside of QB, rarely do you see the elite speed or burst from them outside of McCaff. Getting an NFL team is so different than recruiting with an arm tied behind your back because of academics and lack of NIL as he faced. They never got gimmicky and always ran an offense that will serve RW well with lots of motion and QB rollouts away from pressure. Without elite WR talent most of the time they never could be that explosive. That changes if he gets the job in Denver.

Man the Broncos are just gonna be f***ed for a long time. Seems like as long as Wilson is here, this team will be a giant black hole. We're never gonna find a offensive coach that gonna be willing to put up with his bullshit.

This is so true. NBA players don't give a damn about the fans and are by far the most selfish group of athletes around. Add to this how many engineer trades to certain teams to play with their "friends" and you just have to wonder when the fans are finally going to tell them to shove it.

Didn't even need to click on it and I absolutely KNEW who wrote that trash article. Dude is a Jay Mariotti/Woody Paige wannabe. At least Dater, for all his flaws, knows how to write.

Load management is a huge issue in the NBA right now and it needs to be addressed by the league. If that means fewer games, then so be it. I understand why they do it but fans are right to be pissed when the players they paid to see aren't there. But I also understand why teams do it. Do we really want to see Blue Arrow's knee explode again in what amounts to a meaningless contest?

There's a better and more nuanced way to approach this very real problem but Clickbait Merilatt, the idiot who rose to "prominence" trashing the Avs every chance he got has now set his sights on the Nuggets. Instead of doing any research or interviews, he just pukes out a shrill screed from his iPad that I could've written in ten minutes.

Should be insanely easy for the NBA to eliminate back-to-backs. That would help with some, but not all of this. It's at the very least easier for the NBA to do it than the NHL.

That scheduling was total BS, like Milwaukee is just down the road from New Orleans. But no matter, the regular season has become an utter joke. Most teams are treating it like preseason.

Yeah we know the writer sucks but it's still a relevant point. And worst thing is you know the NHL is going to do this more as we go along. MLB already does it. Athletes are saying to the fans we don't care what you spend or how much you care, it's all about us and our selfish egos. We will play on broken bones for a title but a hangnail is enough to keep us out of a regular season game.

Oh it's definitely coming to the NHL, and given what the Avs are going through right now I'm not entirely against it.

I don't think it's just about ego though, it's about championships. In a sports culture where everyone, including us fans, roll out the mantra that the regular season doesn't matter, it's Stanley Cup or bust, blah blah blah, we can't entirely blame teams for doing this. The regular season is more of a grind than ever, and the playoffs in the NHL are a grind unlike any other sport. The Avs even did this last season when they had Landy undergo surgery so he was able to tough it through the playoffs. As it turns out, his knee issue was far, far more serious than we all originally thought.

This is also why Bettman has rightfully held his ground and said NO to postseason expansion.

I stopped watching basketball years ago, after Michael retired.

People are throwing cold water on Payton to the Broncos.

Reich, who could have been a good offensive HC, is gone to the Panthers.

Quinn, who Wilson reportedly likes, is staying in Dallas.

Ryans is being linked to the Texans pretty significantly. He's a defensive guy with no HC experience but his approval rating is off the charts right now. All of the leadership qualities and intangibles along with the great defensive background. Their ownership is terrible and they have no QB (probably will draft one high) so who knows how it goes but Ryans seems like a guy who could lead an organization for a decade.

All of that to say......Broncos? Who wants to coach this team? Jim Caldwell?

geez Ben Allbright dropped Mike Shanahan's name in as a "bridge coach" for the Broncos today

I just saw Mike at his restaurant about a month ago.......there's no way he should coach.....He's aged quite a bit and should be enjoying his retirement vs dealing with this mess.......I love Mike but damn he looked like he was 80 years old when I saw him.

Yep it looks like the realistic outcome is no one thinks they can “fix” Russ. It’s a doomed job so it will go to a middling coach that will be here for the next 3-4 years where each year the ceiling is .500. They won’t be terrible either though, that was this year and they blew it by trading for Russ. So basically it will be like every year since the Super Bowl win. Then the search will begin again for a QB

Yeah, it's tough. All the best coaches in the league know what they're doing. Any of them watching his film this year will see the guy that showed little to no flash through an entire season and multiple playcallers. Nobody wants to coach a coach-killer.
