Try to make sense of this all.
First I read these and think ok, that's fair value to the player and the team for backups
- Jameis Winston (Signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Browns)
- Mitch Trubisky (Signed a two-year, $5.25 million contract with the Bills)
Then I see
- Gardner Minshew (Signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Raiders)
- Sam Darnold (Signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Vikings)
And think WTF??? Then these hit and I really have to wonder what in the heck considering what they did with the Broncos, plus I'd really love to see what Rypien got from the Bears.
- Joe Flacco (Signed a one-year, $8.7 million contract with the Colts)
- Drew Lock (Signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Giants)
To me, the QB market is so inefficient and can be downright stupid. Plus the system you run matters but you can always get a relatively good deal if you stay away from the madness of the first few days. I can totally see the Broncos having called Darnold's agent and hearing we are looking for 8 figures and hanging up the phone. I mean really $5m for Lock and $25 million (15m guaranteed) for Minshew??? I bet someone signs Tannehill or Jimmy G for something under $4m. Are either of those guys worse than any of these others?
I'm hoping the two P's are smart and playing Moneyball here. Only thing that concerns me is the nonsense Hill got paid by the Saints. You can get respectable QB play for a reasonable price while you wait for a drafted QB to become a difference maker. And with how many busts or just mediocre efforts teams have gotten from many top 5 selections this seems like an easy way to maximize cap management.
