Problem is getting rid of Trouba is all but impossible. Even if the Rangers wanted to pay the hefty price to off load him to rebuilding teams, he has a 15 team NTC. That's just a contract New York is eating until it runs out.
I don't think this is true. Teams do stupid things for big physical RDs. The problem for the Rangers that Trouba made it very difficult for them to work around his NMC becoming a M-NTC and by the time he gave his list UFA was underway and teams were rapidly using up their cap space. At that point you're dealing with trying to maneuver a trade for a guy making 8 mil this year and next year.

However, after this season, you only have next year's money to think about. Cap is rising. Rangers can retain a little if needed and they have his list. I don't think it should be assumed that they can't trade him.

They've been a shit analytical team that has been bailed out by goaltending for years now. This isn't anything new for them.
It is though. They've never been nearly this bad.

In the past they were below average 5 on 5. Then the deadline would happen, they'd pick up whatever scraps Drury could fit under the cap and the would prop them up at even strength. Right now the don't look like they belong in the NHL. This is not an exaggeration; there were large stretches against the Sharks where they couldn't get the puck off them.

The unraveling of this team was when Trouba was named captain over Kreider who was coming off a 50+ goal campaign. He and his boyfriend Zibanejad have not looked the same since. They were driving forces 5 on 5. They both obviously exert 70% effort out there.

For Zibanejad that continues into the playoffs. Kreider at least turns it up

You want Buffalo to get five years older, two million dollars more expensive, and far less productive….by trading away one of the few top six players in the league they know wants to be a Sabre?

Can they add anything to make sure this happens? First rounders? Pints of their blood?
Yeah maybe Krieder and 1st then? Add in Othmann or a 2026 1st if that’s not enough

Why do they need to shake things up? They're 5 points out of 1st with 4 games in hand and this team was 2 games away from the cup finals

Uh they're 12-6-1 on the year and 6-4 in their last 10.

Really weird timing for this.

Why do they need to shake things up? They're 5 points out of 1st with 4 games in hand and this team was 2 games away from the cup finals

Most Rangers fans will tell you that the record isn't indicative of the play. Our defense would be eaten alive in the playoffs, never mind the Kreider-Zibanejad-Smith line.

How would NYR fans feel about a trade of Killorn for Trouba + a pick/asset?
I don't really think that makes them better. If the plan is getting rid of Trouba plus an asset, they may as well just wait until the offseason. The panic right now is that this team looks awful and needs to improve immediately. I don't see Killorn getting 18 minutes a night on this team or helping that much to include an asset and then go pickup a defensemen

In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, I feel like this is one of those instances of a GM asking an insider to float something to the media so that the players don't get complacent. IMO we are far, far away from any significant changes to their core

Well, there's a lot of Sharks fans would take him if we were compensated to, me included. He'd be our second best RHD and fills an obvious need for size and physicality while being a passable skater. But obviously no one is paying for him.
i think you're mistaken.

Like other people are saying my initial thought was "12-6-1 and you're looking to shake things up?" I'd kill for my favorite 13 year playoff drought stricken team to be 12-6-1

We're pretty spoiled as a fanbase. Even moreso after the rebuild quickly became a retool.

(I'd assume) the concern is that this core has consistently come up short, and the effort isn't there like it was. A shakeup, or even the threat of one, is Drury trying to get the vets to stop being complacent and maintain a consistent effort, which is all the more important when you have young players coming up. No point in rolling it back with a team that's half-assing it.

Recalling Berard, a guy notable for his motor, is reflective of Drury wanting to see some more effort.
