Yep sadly the Avs and hockey in general will always be fourth. Maybe during the playoffs the Avs will appear to be more popular, but in October around these parts its the same "hockey already started?" atmosphere among all but the fanbase. Really true in almost all US cities, just the way it is. I mean DU won its ninth national title yesterday and how many people around Denver even knew such a thing as the Frozen Four was going on? Its just the way it is and that's fine, the NHL has a great business with the fans it has and youth hockey continues to grow here and throughout the West. The NBA can be #2 in some markets with a strong franchise, but MLB will usually beat it. NBA is a bit like the NFL in that its a TV sport, a large percentage of people who watch it on TV have never or only a few times been to a game but they'll watch the league regularly. NHL and MLB are much more experience sports where the fans are those who want to go to the games and get hooked on the games by the live experience.

thx for all the responses. I must say, i am totally shocked. I always thought Denver was a big huge hockey town. They have the best and most exciting team in hockey by far, and are so fun to watch. Also, Denver is a cold state where i am sure hockey must be played alot. And they just won the Frozen Four. Also with past legends like sakic, forsberg, ray bourque and roy, you'd think there'd be a history in that city with those 2 cups..

I am shocked. I totally expected Avs were easily #2 in that city.. And i thought Mack would be as big in DEN as Sid is in PIT. I guess i was way off.

It ain't that cold here often and it's not like there are a bunch of frozen lakes or backyard rinks around. Look at the DU roster, three kids from So Cal played important roles for the team and zero Colorado kids. In good years you get 1-2 kids from CO. That's why Troy Terry was such a big deal here.

Sad news about Wayne Cooper. Apparently dealt with a very serious kidney issue, not sure if that was what caused his death, but 65 is way too young.

My favorite time watching the NBA was as a kid. I kinda just picked Kiki VanDeWeghe as my favorite athlete just because he had a crazy-ass name (I was like, four at the time). Didn't realize just how huge the trade that sent him away back in 1984 was, and in return snagged Fat Level, Cooper, and Calvin Natt. The Doug Moe era was still fun as hell to watch, even though you knew they had no shot whatsoever at a title with the Lakers and Celtics ruling the entire league back then (and it wasn't remotely close). I believe their big run to the Western Conference Finals (which ended when they met up with the Lakers) was Cooper/Level/Natt's first full season with the team. They wouldn't be back until 2009, and then again in 2020. All three times it was the goddamned Lakers.

even though Jokic is just freaking incredible I think Fat Lever will always be #1 in my heart as fav Nugget of all time

He was awesome. I still think he's the best point guard the Nuggets have ever had. Maybe Blue Arrow surpasses him, but he's got a long ways to go...and he can't do that until he gets back on the court.

Joker is the best Nugget of All Time now, that can't be argued, but I'd probably rank Alex English as my all-time favorite.

I'd still rank Alex English above Carmelo Anthony as the best forward the team's ever had. He's still a close second to Joker on the GOAT list. And it's a f***ing joke and a travesty that English was left off the NBA 75 list. Come the f*** on...dude outscored everyone in the decade when it seemed like every scoring record was being broken. He outscored Magic, he outscored Bird, he outscored Dr. J, Wilkins, you name it. No one put up more points in the 80s than English. How do you NOT put that guy in???

Anyway, Wayne Cooper wasn't elite IMO, but he was a staple in the Nuggets frontcourt during their best run as a team prior to this current era.

That’s an interesting debate (Jokic vs English). I think we have talked about that a lot in the past. If Joker wins his second straight MVP is he now the best Nugget of all time? When this came up before I think a lot of us thought Joker needed a little bit more longevity to pass up English. i think you’re right Poke - he might be right there or passed up English now.

It's not even close though. English had some good teammates and they did relatively well as a team but the peak Lakers were around. English was a smooth player with nice scoring touch, but he didn't make his teammates as good as Jokic does. I mean it really isn't even close as to who is the best. Jokic still getting better and being in better shape makes a huge difference. Now he just needs to get a playoffs with everyone healthy and no reason to think he can't win a title or at least finally get the team to the Finals

Raiders didn't really have a choice, especially now that every other AFCW team has a legit QB. And I think Carr and his agent knew that too.

Carr isn't a top 5-7 QB, but he is a top half of the league QB. Not worth that money, but a decent QB.

In general, NFL games with one team having a bad QB are pretty unwatchable events. AFC West games are going to be pretty awesome for awhile.

It's hard for me to not actively root for the Rockies to fail, what a garbage organization -

"Jon Gray wasn’t offered a longer deal until well into the 2021 season, which became his final season in Colorado. Gray found a bigger deal with the Rangers, who were eager to outspend what the Rockies offered.

“The contract was so good,” Gray told reporters in Texas earlier this week. “It felt great to have someone say, ‘We think you are this good and this is why.'”

Freeland, too, has not been offered a long-term deal in Colorado. He said the club hasn’t yet tried.

“As of right now, there’s been no movement,” Freeland said."

I’ll never understand why people follow the Rockies more than the Avs or Nuggets. I feel bad for every player that’s ever sucked into playing under a contract for the Monforts.
I don't believe Rockies are more popular than the Avs (in value yes though). I think some of that stigma is from the fact that it's the only summer sport in the entire state. I see so much more Avs hats, shirts, and license plates around CO than I see with Rockies. Way more people play baseball/softball in the state though due to the sunny weather, I think more people play baseball here than the likes of throwball. My suggestion is that it's filled with casual fans who go for a beer and talk, while Avs and Nuggies have a more hardcore fanbase.

Well think about it. The Rockies play twice as many games and each home game generally has at least as many attendees as a sold out Ball Arena. Some games attract double or even nearly triple a sold out arena. So you do the math. There are a lot more bodies watching the games live. And thanks to Altitude nonsense there are like 10x watching games locally.

Golden State is really really really good. Think they might be the best team in the league right now. Going to be tough to see anyone beating them.

They're good, but other teams will be able to give them a game. Nuggets, aside from Jokic, just aren't that good. No defense, bad turnovers, and Barton and Gordon put up enough bricks to build a house.

Baseball has all that momentum that the Rockies ride the coat tails. Nostalgia, massive press coverage, only summer sport, stat whacking, The Experience. Meanwhile hockey competes with two other sports, doesn’t get national attention and has a staid gate keeping fan base

Loved Wayne Cooper. And those Doug Moe teams. Awesome to watch. Fat Lever.. was there anyone better? And watching Bill Hanzlik manhandle Kareem. No seriously... gave him fits at 6'7". Jabbar said that Hanzlik was one of the toughest defenders he ever played against. And Alex English. Dan Issel. Man those were great teams to watch and pull for.

Playing two games against these Nuggets will make you believe a lot of things that probably aren't true. Jamal saying sorry I'm out was the death sentence for them, might as well rest up and see if these guys finally are ready to play next year.

WTF the NBA playoffs started? Have they been good because even though I might be living under a rock, I have heard absolutely zero hype about them...
