Nuggets GM Tim Connelly also needs to be held accountable for the state of the roster. This is the history:
- Trades away Rudy Gobert at the draft (2013) for Erick Green? Gobert is a perennial DPOY candidate, while Erick Green only played 52 games in the NBA.
- Trades for Nurkić at the draft (2014) only to later trade him plus a 2017 1st round pick for Mason Plumlee. Plumlee played 4 seasons for Denver, not even coming close to the player Nurkić turned out to be. He eventually signed with the Pistons, so we basically lost Nurkić and Plumlee for nothing.
- Drafts Emmanuel Mudiay with the 7th overall pick in the 2015 draft. Mudiay plays 3 years in Denver and never amounts to anything. Had to go play in Europe, and is now trying to get 10 day contracts with NBA bottom dwellers such as Sacramento. This one really hurts because the Nuggets don't often get a top 10 pick, and some of the players drafted after Mudiay would've helped the roster a lot. Players such as: Devon Booker, Cam Payne, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Terry Rozier.
- 2016 could've been an absolute knockout draft as Denver had two picks in the top 15. Connelly got one part of it right when he drafted Jamal Murray with the 7th pick, but the next pick at 15 was pretty much wasted. Connelly drafted Juancho Hernangómez, who played 4 seasons in Denver and was a decent role player. However, the players picked after him would prove to be killers. Caris LaVert, Pascal Siakam, Dejounte Murray, and Malcolm Brogdon. Pascal Siakam added to our current roster would've been so beastly.
- 2017... Now this one is a kick in the balls. Denver selects Donovan Mitchell with the 13th overall pick, and proceeds to trade him to Utah for the 24th overall pick and Trey Lyles. Mitchell is now an all-star with Utah. Denver used the 24th overall pick to select Tyler Lydon, who played 26 games with Denver. Lyles played 2 seasons for the Nuggets and averaged 8-9 points per game. This is the darkest timeline...
2018 Denver selects Michael Porter Jr., a player with a history of injury problems. Despite that, MPJ plays well enough to earn the GM's trust. Connelly gives him a max deal, and what do you know, the injury problems return... It's always fun to see MPJ laughing and having a good time on the sidelines in street clothes...
That's just the draft stuff. The trades and free agents aren't much better:
- You trade a 1st for Jermei Grant and don't know that he isn't interested in re-signing with you? How??? It's a pretty simple conversation with OKC. "Hey, we're interested in trading for Grant. We understand you want a 1st for him, but in order to do that, we need to know if he will re-up with us. No, he won't? Ahh, that's a shame, we're gonna look elsewhere then. Peace." You just f***ing gave away a 1st for nothing! You gotta have those available at the trade deadline. You can't waste them and expect to be successful.
- Connelly trades for Barton in 2015. Connelly falls in love with Barton similar to how Bednar loves JTC. Won't trade him no matter how many turnovers he commits, or how many bad shots he takes. Dude never fights through a screen either.
- Connelly trades for AG last season. Some people really like him, but I think he is very hit and miss. Shows glimpses of being a big time player, but doesn't keep up with it.
There's some other minor stuff I could get into, but this post is already way too long. Connelly isn't all bad as he did find Jokic in the 2nd round, but he has made some very critical errors that may prevent us from ever winning a ring.
