What about a sign and trade with New York...Taj+Dunleavy for Carmelo

Then sign and trade with the Lakers...Boozer+pick for Gasol?

Rose
Butler
Carmelo
Gasol
Noah

Any possibility? Going from Gibson to Gasol should clear up space to give Carmelo more money...because our current offer to Melo with our cap space is pathetic compared to the Knicks. Is this at all realistic?

Then when Gasol retires in a season or two we go with

Rose
XXX
Carmelo
Mirotic
Noah

Pau Gasol could find his way to Chicago, but it's unlikely to be in a sign-and-trade for Carlos Boozer, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

@chicagobullsbot: Chicago Bulls got enough information through back channels to believe Carmelo Anthony is picking the New York Knicks. (Source: Joe Cowley)

Ridiculous.

We were better off just keeping Boozer. Pau is good and all but he's soft and is lazy at defense. It was never about winning for Anthony. It's not like he's ever going to be poor. Yeah, it's an extra what? 34 million but that's meaningless if the chances to win a ring are basically slim to none.

I don't get it. The Bulls have all these pieces to give these UFAs the chance to win now and we keep losing out or getting these "fringe big names". It happened in 2010 with Boozer and now it's gonna happen with Pau.

Kinda livid actually.

Gasol is a big upgrade over Boozer. He's 7 feet tall, can play center, has a post up game, and is a great passer, none of which Boozer possesses.

They went after one player who hasn't even signed yet.

Exactly, I know I'm bias but I think he'd be making a huge mistake to go back to the knicks. I have no idea what signing for that kind of money feels like, but I don't really see a difference between 15 mil and 20 mil per year...you could buy whatever the heck you want with either

For some reason people always forget how good Pau is.

Even if you argue/compare their offensive/defensive skillsets, there's no debating that Pau is 7 feet tall and can play center. That's important. Looks like they'll have a front court of Taj/Noah with Gasol/Mirotic off the bench.

The Bulls limped out of the playoffs this year in embarrassing fashion. They can't score. Pau was once great, but is no longer a difference maker that will have a big effect on this team.

I'm not against the move, but it's just not a big deal.

There is no doubt that Pau can shoot, if this team can get both Gasol and Melo, they'll be better. I just am not convinced that adding Pau Gasol alone makes this team better. Maybe if we lose out on Melo we should look at Danny Granger? Maybe re-sign Deng to a better contract?

Granger already signed with Miami and isn't good anymore anyway.

Which is why you sign a put up 17.4 PPG even though he was banged up, draft one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA history, and bring over one of the best offensive players in Europe. It's frustrating to lose out on Melo (potentially) but as far as Plan B's go, I don't mind it.

Isn't Pau over the hill, or at least trending in that direction? His signing would be equivalent to the Clowe, Weiss, or Clarkson signings in the NHL. Where a GM is in desperation mode to do something and in that desperation hands out a big contract to a player that they're under the illusion will fill a need for the team.

I know basketball isn't hockey, but I think it's still true that building a team through free agency and handing out big contracts to over the hill players isn't the way to go. A free agent has to be a complimentary piece.

Just a matter of hours until Carmelo Anthony informs the Knicks of his return on a five-year deal, as @FisolaNYDN reported this week.
There it is.

Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 23m
Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf has long resisted idea of sending Boozer away via amnesty. So Chicago continues to chase sign-&-trade for Pau

JR really sucks

Methinks I will be quite happy with my decision to stop listening to local sports radio a few months ago for this upcoming week.
