I use the Apple health app to record my basic activity metrics - steps, distance, etc. Noticed on Wednesday that I had about 18k steps that day, which is more than usual, as I average around 12k per day. Couldn’t think of what I had done extra, but figured a bunch of running around had got me the extra steps. Today my wife was cutting the grass with the ride on mower, hasn’t done any walking yet, and announced that she had done 7k steps according to the app. I also cut the grass Wednesday. ;). Didn’t think it would pick up riding on a mower as steps. Never had my phone with me before when cutting grass so this was a first.

Good points. I don't think people realize how seemingly menial jobs such as yardwork and house work can count as decent physical activity. Yardwork especially is such a great way to clear your mind and connect with some nature.

If my body wasn’t falling apart I could play beach volleyball all day everyday. My favorite participation sport. Great sequence there.

In my childhood we had a Norwegian couple live next door to us. They were seniors. The wife who tended their large garden every year lived a long life. She was still out there pulling weeds and doing all the gardening at age 85. By her accounts she'd been doing it all her life and had done it on their lot there since the 40's. She was healthy, able, and got constant exercise. Her husband that was more sedentary passed away decades before her.

Back then there was no power equipment either. you dug the garden by hand with a fork or spade, and you had the old lawn cutters. Not power mowers. No snow blowers either. Myself I refuse to get a rototiller or snow blower or any of that.

Are we really better off now with all the power equipment?

Video has been disabled but I loved beach volleyball because you could just dive for balls and not hurt yourself. Sport is enjoyable on sand, not so much on hard court.

Hopefully this one works:

What was up with the site not responding earlier? Wanted to see what was going on and had to give up.

I think it's a "it depends." A lot of it is great for people with varying degrees of disability.

On a personal level, my wife and I moved to a place that has two grocery stores within walking distance. We try to go for walks as much as possible now (also saves on gasoline!). I recognize I'm way less active now and even when I worked in an office would opt to take the stairs the five floors when possible just to make sure I was doing something.

I wasn't actually allowed to even try when we moved offices and was on the 17th-19th floor. That said I probably wouldn't have for that many flights... although it'd be fantastic exercise to do daily!

Not really sure where to put this...

so Hockey Canada has been using hockey registration fees to settle sexual assault cases.

the man to establish this fund/practice was.... Bobby Nicks.

It was a fund set up for all liabilities from what I gather where insurance might not be enough. Given the amount of members that hockey canada is responsible for I don't know that this is really a story.

How they deal with these liability claims is a different story.

Yeah, it's an uninsured liability fund. It's for any claims that aren't covered by their insurance plan. Basically every big company has one. I bet even the Globe and Mail has one haha.

This is just shit "journalism".
