Both Marcus Semien and Corey Seager signed in Texas after the team hit over 100 losses. Now they're both WS champs only two years later.

The only thing that would prevent a player from signing is the Cardinals not paying the money needed, not the player looking at loss records.

Mo won’t out bid teams

Then that should be the complaint.

Not that the team had one losing season for the first time in 15 years.

but I think it plays a part. If the Cards had the same offer on the table for Snell and Nola as the Braves, Phillies and the Dodgers, do you think they’d pick the last place team over the those teams?

Denton didn't do the best job of conveying his tweet here. Having a similar payroll to the team pre-deadline gives them around 40-50m to spend. Keep in mind this was before a handful of players were traded, and Waino and Verhagen are off the books as well.
still not enough, in fact not even close to having enough $ to fill the holes in the team, especially pitching.

So you're saying that, hypothetically, if the cardinals sign Nola and Gray + trade for a 3rd starter, that would be an unsuccessful offseason? I understand that there would hopefully be other (smaller) moves like relievers, and depth. But I'd consider that a winning winter IMO.

I am prepared to be disappointed this offseason for the Cardinals. I think they will get outbid for Yamamoto, Nola, Snell, Montgomery. I can see them in the Gray (only because he is 34 and will command a 3-4 year contract), Rodgriguez, Stroman market.

Yea if they're not in hard on Yamamoto then what are we even doing here. The dude is a 25 year old stud. Fits in super well with all our current younger core and looks every bit like the top end starter we need.

I'm honestly over the Goldy/Arenado core at this point, we tried for them and it didn't work out. Sucks, sorry, oh well. I'm much more intrigued by Gorman/Walker/Donovan/Noot as the group to build around. Yamamoto slots right in with them.

I think the biggest problem with the Cardinals in FA is that they are so scared of overpaying the Top end FA that they end up overpaying the mediocre middle tier FA.

They absolutely are and have been for a while now. Cardinals probably rightfully so are still in their model from 2000-2010 which was great then. But we aren’t turning out the young arms like we were to be able to avoid taking the leap. Unfortunately now taking the leap means making a Padres/Rangers/Dodgers massive off-season and being ok with recovering the money later if it doesn’t work out by shedding it all out. Don’t think this franchise is alright with that.

Nola goes back to the Phillies. Well that’s one name that the Cardinals were connected to

Apparently the Cards never even met with him according to Goold. I just can’t envision a realistic way this team turns things around next year. We need basically an entire pitching staff.

Nola’s agent told Mo they were keen on staying in Philadelphia hence why he took a discount contract. More than likely if they get an “ace” it will probably be via trade but we’ll see

Good. I'm glad the Cards didn't pursue Nola. If they were going to enter into that long of a contract, I'd rather it be for a younger pitcher like Yamamoto.

why would they meet him? hes not a 40yr old LHP on the verge of retirement.

looking forward to another Matz type signing. I love a full rotation full of fringe starters!
