I'd have a tough time parting with 2 of Walker, Winn, and Hence. That 2020 draft looks like it could be a really strong one for us with Burleson also crushing AAA.

Soto without an extension is still 3 potential post seasons with him, Goldy and Arenado as your (most likely) 2, 3, 4 hitters. It really comes down to whether the FO believes whatever package they give up for Soto turns this ball club into a contender to win the whole thing for those 3 post seasons or not.

Personally, I don't think that even with Soto, this club will win it all with how stacked the NL teams are. The Braves and Dodgers are both simply better built across the board. However, if we do end up making the move for Soto, I can't help but be super excited just to be able to see him play on a daily basis for my favorite team. Like Badgers said above, he is essentially a left-handed Albert and we all know how much fun that 10 years of prime Albert was.

Even with Soto I don't believe in our pitching to get it done. If we trade away a lot of good pieces for Soto it means we won't have anything to trade for pitching. Plus I doubt we are going to sign Soto to a big Contract and sign the good pitchers in FA

I do find it funny that Nolan Arenado, one of the most intense competitors ever, the guy who said he wanted to win a division for a change after having lost a division by one game is choosing to miss two games with the Cardinals down 1.5 games in the standings.

who cares, its his choice. he has a bad back right now anyways, 4 days off will do him good.

He’s not really choosing to miss two games/games in Canada. He’s choosing to do what he believes is best for his health.

I get highly annoyed when reporters try and make a stir out of not getting vaccinated equating to not caring about the team. I find it comical anyone can even consciously make an argument that Goldy or Arenado don’t care enough about winning because they are unvaccinated.

On a wildly different topic. I really hope we can find a way to keep Jordan Walker and still acquire Soto. Regardless with Soto it’d feel like the first time since the early 2010s the Cardinals had a lineup that didn’t include 4 guys best suited for the 7/8 holes in the lineup.

I dunno. Imagine making the World Series against the Blue Jays and having to go potentially four games without your best two hitters because they "did their own research" by googling sketchy links and ignoring the broad consensus of the scientific community.

Their body, their choice, but you can still call out idiocy when and where you see it.

I certainly don't want to speak for everyone, and especially not for the reporters dragging them about their competitiveness, I just find it mind boggling (and, yes, a little off-putting) that these two people who have access to world class health care and health information are so poorly informed (or, more likely, have made such poor decisions regarding their health) that they have misjudged the health risks from being vaccinated versus the health risks (immediate and long-term) from actually getting COVID.

On the Walker issue, while I acknowledge that Walker is the superior prospect, I would much rather give him up than Wynn given the current state of our organization and the incredibly long time we have been waiting for a shortstop prospect to actually pan out. I would absolutely be opposed to giving up both of them in any deal or deals, even if it meant missing out on Soto.

The Soto stuff is kind of parallel to the Tkachuk to Blues talk for me. I think you could make the argument Soto is a better player relative to his peers than MT, and of course would be a great add to any team. But I think given the fact the Cardinals almost certainly will never give any player the type of deal Soto is looking for, combined with the asset cost, AND that the Nationals apparently want to tack on the horrible Corbin contract that it just doesn’t make any sense - particularly when you consider the Cardinals are about to have to start pulling fans out of the stands to start games on the mound.

Great, great player. Not sure it makes any sense, nor do I think the Cards FO would make this type of move even if everything else was equal.

I think depending on what we have to give up and what type of contract Soto would want from a consistent playoff contender, I'd be interested. We do have a ton of options for different packages to put together.

Pitching is obviously something that is needed, but that can probably be addressed relatively cheaply.

Pitching I feel like if we go cheap it's going to end up a Happ and Lester direction, and I really don't think we are better long term going that direction

Yeah, it's kicking the can down the road type option, but it's also difficult finding long-term pitching solutions at the trade deadline. If we can find a solid 3ish type guy and maybe an innings eater type, I think it'll be good enough for the stretch run.

I agree, outside of Montas and Castillo there’s really nothing out there that’s worth ponying up the trade chips for.

Even then I’d much rather dump more into acquiring Soto long term vs Montaa/Castillo who likely aren’t aces but are going to cost quite a bit.

I think it’s hard to debate that Soto is an elite elite talent. If we can get ownership to shell out the money long term for him I think you push the chips on the table.
