Yeah, this is why I don't believe any of the talk Mo has about being happy with what we have. He made the same comments right before trades for Goldy and Arenado. That doesn't mean we are ultra aggressive about SS or a bat, but we are just looking at many options to upgrade the team, the problem is just that we aren't as willing to push the budget or prospect cost compared to other clubs, so that's why sometimes we come away empty handed. We are at least in a position to be comfortable with our infield, Edman and Donovan/Gorman is still a pretty good SS/2B combo.

Nightengale has said that executives have predicted that Swanson could end up with us if he doesn't sign with Atlanta.

Swanson would be a real shame. Would cost a lot and he's a prime candidate to disappoint. Had a great year last season carried by an unstainable BABIP which was evident the last two month where he was a very average hitter. He had 3 incredible months in the middle of a lousy April, August, and September.

Majority of what they keep saying about the Cards is that it's the Cards vs Cubs for Swanson and Cards are linked to Murphy, the Toronto 3, and Contreras.

My questions are.

How much better is Arenado-Swanson-Edman-Goldy compared to Arenado-Edman-Donovan-Goldy.

And do we go for a catcher who is weaker on the defensive side with a better at bat. Or a defensive catcher who's weaker on the offensive side.

Depends on the cost. I'm not too worried about last season, his 2021 season was pretty similar, where he absolutely crushed the ball in 3 different months, and meh in the others. That's probably the type of hitter he is, and as the 3rd or 4th best hitter in the lineup, that's fine.

Option 1 is significantly better than option 2. Even as someone not entirely thrilled with signing Swanson, he is a significantly more impactful bat than Donovan will likely ever be. If we can move Donovan to more of a utility role ala Zobrist instead of having to rely on him to man a specific position, that would be a much better squad.

I'd be completely fine adding Swanson, yeah he's not as good as Turner or Bogaerts, but, I think his defensive abilities combined with moving Edman back to 2B would be amazing. Then having Donovan there to be able to give players days off at all 4 infield positions would be key.

Swanson+Murphy/Contreras this off-season would definitely be a step in the right direction. Still need a 4OF LH bat with Pop tho. Nimmo or Bellinger would be ideal. Especially with me not trusting Nootbaar over a full season. I also can't bring myself to trust any of our current outfielders to be everyday CF.

I'd rather Bogaerts. They were just talking more about Swanson so I was trying to lower my hopes and expectations. Lol
If we can legitimately get one, that would be great, Bogaerts is way more consistent, so he's the clear choice between the 2. Bogaerts would make me confident in the lineup again, he'd be the 3rd best bat, and he's a strong one. And then hopefully someone like O'Neill bounces back, Carlson figures out to hit RHP, or some of the young guys prove they are ready.

Nimmo would suit this lineup absolutely perfect but for the prices quoted, I just don't see it happening and not sure I blame the FO for not spending that type of money on a guy like him.

I wouldn't even bother with Bellinger either, he's going to get a decent amount of money on a 1-2 year deal. If we are genuinely in on the SS market, just get one of those guys, and use the rest of the money on C and pitching. Maybe add a cheaper OF if we need to depending on what the roster looks like.

I'd rather have Nimmo than Swanson. Only thing that worries me about Nimmo is injury history but he's a much better hitter than Swanson and he's decent in CF

Nimmo has the same problem as O’Neil, always hurt, if we are going to add in the OF we need someone with a healthy history
