Are these normal in the US? Because they’re way better than they have any right to be.

Since we're talking snacks: As a seven year old I bought a peach clearly canadian from a small store on an island in the baltic sea. Sometimes I thought it was a dream it but it turns out the drink is very real. Are they easy to buy in north america? Will I have to cross the border when visting Buffalo to get one?
The taste I remember is like something elven out of lord of the rings.

They no longer sell those here. I mean they might at a larger grocery store, but I haven’t seen that since I was in high school.

So it’s been interesting on this job. We were averaging 4 windows and frames replaced a day, and kinda just left it alone. The hospital maintenance guy had no idea how to trim out the windows, so I picked up that job. And because it’s an extra job I picked up, I’m get to charge the company I work for extra and they have no choice in the matter.

As well, I have a chance to pick up doing renovations on their homes for people who are working at the hospital. I mean I want to take them, but seeing I’m currently 700km from home, I also don’t. Because I don’t want to move here. Especially with the jobs I still have to do back in my hometown (two kitchen renos, two bathroom renos, an apartment lobby reno, and an apartment building attic re-line).

But one of my friends moved here for work years ago, and we went out to the bar last Friday night. It was a pretty quiet night, so we just played pool with a couple of girls that he knows that was there. One of them was the bartender, and she ended up buying me a bunch of shots and came home with me. Yesterday I ran into her running to a hardware store and she asked me when I’m taking her back home again.

And I was exploring the hospital, seeing I was given full security clearance to see what window frame from the outside is where. Tomorrow we get to be changing the window and frames in the oxygen therapy room (and can’t use power tools because of the risk of explosion) and change windows in the biohazard and infectious diseases room.

I expect to be the front runner for Employee of the Day after letting my team lead know that we have a three day weekend. He didn't realize that we have Veterans Day off as a company holiday.

Must be nice, this sonofagun right here gets to work today, tomorrow, and Monday! But let’s be real- I’m gonna walk around and listen to audiobooks. No extra pay for Monday is bullshit, but whatever- good job if you don’t have much else going on. Just finished a Murakami, goddamn I love me some Murakami.

I’ve worked every day since Oct. 28. I’m not getting a day off until some point this (upcoming) weekend.

Will fix everything
So, on the job side of things, my current job is good. Paid well, good company, etc. Got very lucky that this essentially fell into my lap after my last contract gig fell apart.

Unfortunately, we were acquired a few weeks ago. The former boss that I followed here is semi retiring, which makes things even more murky. Any protection afforded me by my relationship with him is gone. He's likely cashing out.

I brought up to him that I was worried about potential redundancy and he said if anything I'd likely get a bigger role....and after doing my research that isn't going to happen. Alot of red flags going in here:

1. While our company is distributed and 100% remote, the acquiring company is 100% in office. There are no offices near me.
2. They have acquired similar companies in the past and done not nice things. There is a story where they announced on a company wide zoom Return to Office and someone boo'd. They fired that person for merely a boo during a company meeting.
3. The company is known industry wide as shady and terrible support. They are infamous auto renew contracts and hiding 3 year terms after trials etc. They cycle through CSO's and play fast and loose with best practices.

This isn't a company I would have applied to when looking for jobs in the past. I think I have SOME time (we are essentially 10x-ing our infra bringing on a lot of the parent companies customers) so for now, I should be safe. My big issue is:

My last job was 8 months (contract role that went south), and I am currently in month 3 here. It's not a good look in a competitive market for remote tech jobs to jump THAT often.

I'm getting real sick of the tech job circus. In the last 10 years, I've worked at 3 good tech companies that were by all metrics a good decision.

1. Company one was a public company that got taken private by a PE firm and slashed and burned it to the ground.
2. Company two was a good small company that went public and then had to lay people off because it didn't grow as fast as wall street liked.
3. Company 3 (my current company) is likely going to be absorbed into this bad company and things are going to go south, it's likely a matter of when.

I don't even know what to do at this point. All the big tech companies are just laying people off to push up their stock. So even if I caught on there, chances I'm in the same boat in a few years (months?) is likely.

It's sort of nice.

A few years ago, my employer decided to try and appease all sides of the political spectrum and added Juneteenth and Veterans Day as dedicated holidays. They did not give us 2 more dedicated holiday days for this, however. So, in previous years, we would have gotten Friday December 26th as a dedicated holiday. But, we need to use PTO to get it this year because they have opted for three holidays that people tend to not like off because of where they fall on the calendar and their proximity to other holidays (MLK Day being close to New Years Day, Juneteenth being close to the 4th of July, and Veterans Day being close to Thanksgiving).

First world problems for sure. But, it does cause some people to get salty.

sorry to hear that Matt. I think you're smart to start looking, as that acquiring company sounds like trouble.
I've said it numerous times since I retired from IT (42 years in). IT is not the place to be looking for a job anymore. Between AI, machine learning and the generally lousy IT work environment, I would stay away from anything to do with coding, analysis, or anything that can be taught to a "robot". Data science/analytics or info security/auidt would be where I'd look in these times.
