I'd imagine the Attack would look for what Guindon cost the Fronts .

Considering the acquisition cost for Smith and McCue last year, I would imagine the price for Smith would be heavier than Guindon. But, that may depend a bit on where Smith is willing to go.

I don’t think it really matters though. IF Roobroek returns, that frees them up to trade a couple OA’s. The return they get for those players likely takes care of the cost of Smith….or close. Maybe one of those guys like D’Amato and picks woudl be better for Owen Sound.

I would bet that Owen Sound is not in the market for another OA

The idea of trading Luca D’Amato PLUS draft picks for Konnor Smith is ridiculously lopsided.
D’Amato is a top four defenseman and power play specialist. Smith is a bottom pair plugger.

If Oshawa doesn’t pay it, someone else will. They traded their ‘07 1st round pick to acquire him and McCue. McCue wasn’t the key player in that deal from my perspective. They will want more than they receive din the Guindon trade and I think they will get it from some other team. If Oshawa isn’t willing to go there, move on to other options.

This isn’t about me saying Oshawa will trade D’Amato and picks. It is me saying that is the value they would need to trade to get him if they want him.

Personally, I agree with you. I think Punnet is a better player last season and far more versatile than Smith this year. I was shocked when OS gave up what they did to acquire him and McCue. Shocked.

I like Wakely for Oshawa. You need a 2nd centre behind Ritchie. Line up Senneke and Roobroeck on separate lines with Ritchie and Wakely and it is game over in my opinion. I like Brampton but if Oshawa returns Roobroeck and adds Wakely, with that defence and goaltending plus the experience from a trip to the Finals last year? IMO, that puts Oshawa in the drivers seat. Then just add some depth pieces to fill some of the gaps. Game over.

Who would you prefer given the choice. Wakely or Barlow?

If Roobroeck were to return as an OA, I think Wakely would be the better fit for Oshawa.

I think Brad Gardiner would be a great fit in Oshawa as well. Not as dynamic as Wakely of course but he is strong two-way and goes gets pucks and is pretty decent behind the net. If he is feeding Roobroeck on the 2nd line? Wowzers.

I really like Oshawa’s back end. Oster is obviously a top 3 goalie. Then you have Marrelli and Danford as solid producers. Maybe you keep D’Amato but I think having a rearguard general like Punnet would be a better option.

So, assuming all of Ritchie, Senneke, and Roobroeck return, adding that 2nd centre is key in my mind. You have the core top two lines set. Jsut need to find the right passengers. Buckley would be one of them. Then you have the goaltending and the top 2 D-Men in Marrelli and Danford. Bedkowski plays as a solid 3rd pair guy. Just need to add some depth back there with a Punnet style replacement.

It is not often a team can simply add a good 2nd centre, a mobile and physical D-Man that can move the puck and some depth pieces and be considered the top team in pre-season prediction lists. Having an open OA spot helps.

Having more of a top heavy lineup may not be as good int he regular season when you are playing 3 in 4 every weekend but when the playoffs roll around, having that top heavy lineup really makes a difference. They can take over the close games and break deadlocks.

Some team might be dumb enough/desperate enough to overpay for Konnor Smith, but it most definitely won’t be Oshawa. Especially if Roobroeck returns.

Unless it’s an absolute superstar, the majority of OA players are relatively cheap to acquire. Last year Oshawa gave up a 3rd and a 6th to upgrade from Tommy Stewart to Connor Punnett. That’s a massive improvement.

Giving up D’Amato to acquire Konnor Smith would be a DOWNGRADE for Oshawa. Even if it was a straight up 1-for-1 deal. D’Amato can be trusted for 23min to 25min a game - - as we saw during the Grnerals deep playoff run last year - - and anchors the top power play unit. Konnor Smith can do neither of those.

As it stands now Oshawa has Oster and D’Amato locked into OA spots. If Roobroeck returns, he’ll be the third OA with Torrance being the odd man out.

Paying the price to acquire Wakely makes ZERO sense if Roobroeck returns because of the opportunity cost of losing D’Amato on the blue line. If Roobroeck doesn’t return, then it might be justifiable.

Even though 19yr olds will cost more in a trade than a comparative OA, that’s the direction Oshawa should focus. With Roobroeck returning, Oshawa has the best OA group in the league, bar none. So it would make sense to augment those three with a decent 19yr old.

A guy like Brad Gardiner would be a good option for that. He was a massive disappointment last year, but he could slot in as a serviceable middle six forward. Hard er would be cheaper than Wakely and a much better idea for Oshawa.

Some team will do it. There are few players like Smith. You may undervalue a big physical D-Man that can allow the remainder of the team to play a bit bigger but teams that don’t have a player with that attribute will pay more than they probably should. Sam McCue is a decent player but they didn’t give a 1st rounder last year for McCue as the primary player in that deal. Other teams were in on that trade which is why OS had to give up Addy to get those two players.

That suggests to Owen Sound that they can hold on to Smith for a while and see what happens or they can try to move him now if it makes sense. It is likley my trade value is accurate. OShawa wouldn’t NEED to give D’Amato but the possibility exists if they were to move him in that trade, they lessen the draft picks going the other way. Of course, they could simply do two trades. Player in - player out. They may even be able to get a similar deal for D’Amato elsewhere making it a relatively zero balance trade. I could see that maybe happening.

I think Oshawa needs to wait on Roobroeck and Ritchie before they expend draft pick capital. There is no sense upgrading OA’s if neither return.

They really fell into Punnett. That was the best deadline trade IMO.

Huh? You’ve got it backwards, my friend.

If Roobroeck doesn’t return it opens up an OA spot that he would have occupied, so if that’s the case then Oshawa would DEFINITELY be looking to add an OA forward who would be an upgrade over Torrance.

Yeah Gardiner or Cooper foster would be guys I’d be interested in at the deadline or before. Ottawa should be competitive but not good enough to compete, plus not enough draft capital to make significant moves. Maybe even Pinelli. I expect Oshawa to add at Least one big name player and then 2-3 depth pieces to fill out the lineup. Hopefully Sinivuori can be a positive addition, sounds like an ideal winger for a line featuring Buckley and Griffin. Gets it on the forecheck and plays a physical game, can make some plays as well. I think the D is going to be so good, and doesn’t need Smith imo. I predict Svozil is going to be very good and steady nearly right away. I like a D core of Svozil-Danford, D’Amati-Marrelli, Sandhu-Bedkowski, Mcdonell/Bouchard/Blaseg. Best D in the league, and could make an upgrade at some

I agree that Ritchie will be back but wouldn’t you want to ensure that before you trade a bunch of picks for players?

IMO, if Ritchie and Roobroeck are back, all you really need is a 2nd line centre and a few depth pieces. If Ritchie isn’t back, you’ll need TWO Centres. That means you are likely trading your 1st rounder.

I'm pretty sure the only question mark on returning is Roobroeck. I'd say it's 50/50 at this point.

Ritchie NOT returning would be a big shock to Oshawa I believe.

That is my sense as well. This was the same argument I had about what Kingston is doing right now, or at least the rumours that keep circling about what their intentions are.

I think it would be best for Oshawa to hold off a bit. It is not like they need any major acquisitions to be competitive. May as well give it until end of October and then once they are more certain what their roster looks like, make the required adjustments, one way or the other.

It would be a bit reckless to expend assets on a one year player now only to end up in a situation where neither Ritchie, nor Roobroeck return. I am not sure what the Gens would do in that case. Would they cheaply fill a couple holes and then stay status quo through the deadline? I think that is what they would do. They have a pretty smart management team. I think they’d know to wait to see how things unfold before making any major decisions.

Oshawa may not care too much about playoff seeding, and may not have many changes to the roster; so the gens could wait to know if players return or stick with pros, and wait until late November or the trade deadline to make significant additions.

There is benefit to adding early though. Adding identified players as soon as available is important for Kingston imo; it could be the difference between finishing 2 or 4-5. The roster will be different enough that more time together would be better. And early moves could mean savings of player cards and education commitments.

Kingston is waiting on several things right now.
There are a couple players they want badly that could make AHL teams so they are waiting.
I also think they would be smart to pause a bit until they see what happens with Oshawa as right now Oshawa is clearly a better team then they would be.
Brantford also now has got Jiricek which will make their back end stronger and a crapload of picks if they want to give Brampton a run.
The east could be fun to watch this season.

I'm not sure NYR has a lot to gain by sending Roobroeck back to Oshawa he is already big enough and strong enough for the AHL.
Aside him from average skating abilities he's pretty much AHL ready.

One thing to note is he is NOT eligible for contract slide so NYR would be burning a year of his deal to play JR. -makes even less sense now,

Ritchie on the other hand is slide eligible and should be back.

You could make the same argument for any team that is not selling. Adding players early is usually cheaper. It will likely add points to your standings and help your playoff seeding. But, it comes at an opportunity cost as do most things. First, if you don’t know you are a true contender, you may be wasting assets on players you wouldn’t otherwise need in an effort to climb the standings. Second, you pull time away from the rookie type players that rely a lot on those first half minutes they get when other teams are still finding their legs. Sometimes you uncover gems by giving them those early season extra minutes. Third, you allow your leadership group to grasp control of the room so when new players come in, they have to fit into the rom. Unless you are specifically trying to acquire leadership, that dichotomy works much better.

Kingston is not proven capable as a contender; therefore, anything they spend on that goes beyond icing a responsible lineup is wasted assets. Ice a responsible roster. LEt them play and prove capable. IF capable, add the components required to be top of the Conference. I believe that is the approach of the Generals. I think it is the correct approach.

I am fine with the Fronts adding OA’s if they fill obvious gaps and the prices are relatively low. The Guindon addition is an example of a decent acquisition. Maybe a slight but too steep of a price for this early in the season but that is more a matter of opinion. If they want to add another OA at a similar price, so be it. No issues with that. But, if they go out and acquire a high priced 19 year old before they prove capable of winning the Conference, I think ti is premature and irresponsible.

You know Kingston has ten 19-20 year olds, of those are added OAs, 3-1sts and two imports; until proven not a contending team, Kingston is according to the plan going for this season.
