We have a huge logjam on D and a huge logjam of third and fourth liners. I dont think we need Steckel and McClement. Just one would be fine. Play both at the expense of Kadri? not a good idea.

McClement is a good 3rd line center and Steckel is a 4th line center and face off specialist. Both can play big roles for the teams bottom 6.

If no trades are made:

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
JVR-Grabovski-Kadri
MacArthur-McClement-Kulemin
Komarov-Steckel-Brown
Connolly-Lombardi

Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Liles-Komisarek
Rielly-Holzer
Franson

Injured: Gardiner

Reimer
Scrivens

Rielly will be sent back after ~9 games.

I have a feeling Connolly will be in the lineup

I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar that Kulemin will NOT be played on the second line. Carlyle plans to play him to his strengths. He will be shutting down opposition.

Joffrey Lupul - Tyler Bozak - Phil Kessel
James Van Riemsdyk - Mikhail Grabovski - Clarke MacArthur (will be traded, Kadri takes spot)
Nikolai Kulemin - Tim Connolly (hopefully traded, McClement moves up) - Matt Frattin
Jay McClement (moves to 3rd, Komorav takes spot) - David Steckel - Mike Brown

Dion Phaneuf - Carl Gunnarsson
Paul Ranger - Morgan Rielly (9-day trial, Gardiner replaces him)
John-Michael Liles - Mike Komisarek (or Holzer)

James Reimer
Ben Scrivens

I have to say most posters i've read today are moving kulemin down the depth chart aswell , however i think he's having himself a solid rebound season in the khl and was a former 30 goal scorer. I do agree with him being very responsible two way guy though.

Reilly should be back in junior, no question about it.
I would replace Komo with Franson, and have the bottom D pairing consiting of Gardiner (when healthy) along with Kostka or Ranger.

Forward group looks good, with the intent of moving out Connolly, Lombardi and Steckel to make room for some youngsters. Would also like to see us add some toughness at forward.

Kostka can come and give us some mobility and he is better defensively than Reilly at this point. Obviously he doesnt have the speed of Gardiner or Reilly, but really dont want to rush Reilly. Leafs will probably call him in and give him a taste of the camp and maybe an exhibition game, but he should be dispatched back to junior. To be honest, maybe a good callup for the Marlies once Junior season is over as a long playoff run looks on the cards for them.

Kostka is a right handed shot. With Franson, Komisarek, Holzer and Phaneuf all playing the right side there's no room for him, unfortunately.

There will be moves made before the season, gauranteed.

What youngster do we have that could take the role of face off specialist? I think a lot of people forget how important he was to our team before he broke his hand.

Lupul-Stastny-Kessel
JVR-Grabovski-Kulemin
Frattin-Connolly-Kadri
Komarov-JayM-Brown/Steckle
**Rosehill

Phaneuf-Gunnar
Gardiner-Holzer
Liles-Franon/Komisarek/Ranger

Luongo

I ain't gonna post the trades as to how I got those guys, because I highly doubt Kadri would still be on the team and I don't wanna imagine that lol

Yeah, I think Burke will make a few trades. Too many NHL calibre dmen (Phaneuf, JML, Gunnarsson, Gardiner, Franson, Holzer, Komisarek, Paul Ranger when he's signed). Kadri and Frattin are knocking on the door as well, and that's with Connolly playing on the 3rd line..

Gunnar got that ice time because there were no better options.

Yep, because he was good enough to play 1st. pairing minutes with Phaneuf.

Not difficult to understand if there was someone better that player would have got the ice time.

Easiest way to get respect here is to be Canadian, play in the CHL, or be on the Canadian WJC.

According to Don Cherry. He knows how to build a team. Look at the great Mississauga Ice Dogs teams he had in the late 90's and early 2000's. A team built entirely of good ole Canadian grinders playing in the CHL with no Americans or Europeans mooching off their talent ;)

didnt carlyle move phaneuf to the left side last year? i feel like that improved his defensive game id like to see kostka get a chance hes earned it in the ahl cant be worse than komi

Only Dion is guarnteed spot in the starting six, of the players you mentioned.
Also...Kostka could likely play on the left without any issues, if needed.

My starting D, would be this.

Phaneuf-Gunarrsson
Franson-Liles
Kostka-Ranger (until Gardner comes back)
Komo as reserve/trade bait/amnesty fodder

I see something like this:
Lupal-Getz/Stas/Duschene-Kessel
JVR-Grabo-Fratt
Kule-McClem-Kadri
Komo/Lom-Steck-Brown

Phan-Gunn
Gard-Ranger
Liles-Fraser/Holzer/
Koska

Reimer-Scrivens and a Vet goalie

Option A: Burke will try and pry Getzlaf out of Ana throwing Bozak/Franson/MacA and a pick (2nd) as a package, option B is Stasny or Duschene out from Colo will not include Bozak in package he may be used in Luongo talks instead
Komiserak is gone either traded to someone to reach floor or bought out
Lombardi will be dangled to teams

A fourth line of:

Brown - Will Acton - Komarov would be quite the sight. They're all adequate defensively (Acton and Komarov are actually quite good in their own end) and have great speed as well.

It would also be great to have a dedicated penalty killer (Acton) on the fourth line as well so he's fresh for every PK.

Unfortunately, I don't think that Acton will crack the line-up, although I think that the line you have there would be interesting. The only reason is that the Leafs have contracts to pay.

Franson can't play the left side, he needs to play the right side or he is bad...you can not just flip guys onto different sides and expect it to work. As of right now Kostka is an offensive defenseman and we have a team full of them already with more NHL experience, if we have injuries he can come up.

Only we have Brown, Steckel, McClement, Lombardi etc to deal with.

I'd rather not add AHL guys like Acton...and unproven guys like Komarov to our already crowded forward ranks unless they look worthy. Given how short training camp is, Acton won't even be looked at.
