Imagine if we gave Helle a massive deal only to squeak out a 7-6 victory in a playoff game. I doubt we would be feeling great about it. Goalies are such voodoo.

The game itself is a crapshoot these days. Hellebuyck is the likely Vezina winner this year, and will probably even garner MVP votes. He had a bad game, but they happen to everyone. If he were ever truly available (I don't believe he realistically was), I'd feel much better about our situation of course.

Georgiev, on the other hand, rocked an .897% over 63 friggin' games with a negative goals saved above average right around Vitek's range. Between that and Francouz being forced to retire, the Avs are certainly going to be in the market for goaltending I'd think.

*Disclaimer, I did forget about Annunen, who did play well in a small sample this year and is only 24. So they do have someone they might try to give a shot to at least.

Yeah I'm not saying he's bad or anything. It's just funny how goalies work. It will be interesting to see if/ how he bounces back. Winning the game helps tremendously.

Feels like that was a game the Avs are really gonna regret not winning.

On the road, generally outplayed them, and Helle looked pretty bad. Those are the ones you need to convert.

I would be very happy with Hellebuyck on the Devils with that contract. The guy is going to win the Vezina this year easily and goaltending age curves are unique, especially at the high end. I don't fully trust goals saved above expectation metrics, and Brossoit suddenly looking elite in Winnipeg makes me wonder if there's something structurally they do to make them both look better, but NJ could use Hellebuyck badly.

I don't know this for sure I do believe there's a good chance Fitz overplayed his hand last offseason with Schmid as 2nd goalie, thinking he could fix goaltending in season if necessary, possibly trade for Hellebuyck at the deadline from a desperate Winnipeg looking to recoup whatever they could before he went FA. If that's the case he was certainly humbled by last year's reality check re: goaltending and its trade market.

I don't think Hellebuck was reasonably available. I think he was available the way any player looking for a new contract might be available. If some team wants to make a dumb trade and overpay significantly just about any player is available. WPG managed to squeeze LA to overpay for PLD and I'm guessing they will likely try the same thing before they extend Ehlers at the end of next year. On some level the same was true of Markstrom in my view. Teams don't generally move productive players for less than what they see as an overpay until they absolutely know they are leaving as a UFA absent extenuating circumstances.

Well at least the Bruins are guinea pigging themselves lol, goalie rotations historically don't work in the playoffs.

I think it's STUPID they veered from the goalie who played really well the other night.

Ullmark is a lame duck here. I wouldn't hesitate to use him if Swayman struggled but he hasn't yet.

Marty would love this. Can't even play the same goalie two games in a row? Okay.

Montgomery deserves it if they lose this game tonight.

Don’t hate the move. They have been rotating all year. This gets both into the series. Going with a one guy until they lose approach puts the other behind the 8 ball when they get in.

The Isles are still going with Varlamov?

If they lose this one Sorokin may start game 3.

Unless Varlamov doesn't allow many goals. Another 2-1 (if he only allows 2, not including empty net) loss then he's probably safe for game 3.

I'm more surprised by Samsonov still starting game 2 for Toronto.

Islanders are taking this series unfortunately. Rags cakewalk to the conference finals. Gotta hope Florida comes out of the Atlantic again.
