Buffalo Bills Onto Week 3 at Miami

Seems like he'll be the 6th highest paid TE, which actually isnt that bad. I think he's a top-10 TE, so seems fair for both sides. His contract should age well as Im sure a few TEs will get paid more than him in the coming years.

So im wondering how Poyer is feeling. Id rather have him beyond this year than knox. Maybe not for 4 years but like 2.

Yeah i could see Poyer feeling a bit salty today. But maybe not! He does seem like a team player.

IMO this means Edmunds is gone, which honestly I think is Ok. Milano Just turned 28.

1st round pick next year take BPA at Linebacker or OL maybe? Oliver needs to come back

Re Poyer: according to the Bills guys I trust the Bills are absolutely enamored with what Johnson is showing this offseason and think he could be a long term starter. He’s a UFA as well, but if they make a move to lock him in for another year or two on the cheap that would be the real signal Poyer is a goner.

When they drafted Bernard my first instinct was definitely that he would replace Milano after 2022 due to the out. But since they reworked Milanos deal and have played Bernard at MLB, I’m looking differently.
Well - when we were discussing LBers/.potential Edmunds replacements leading up to the draft you were adamant that you wanted a Milano clone who excels in coverage & is speedy above everything else - to play MLB. I didn't think that was realistic in favour of a stronger all rounder. But if they end up with a Milano/Bernard tandem - you will have got your wish & i will have been proven wrong.

We're covering old ground again - but i don't believe that Hyde/Poyer are close to being so easily replaceable.

That is better than initially reported (6th is not 'top 5') but i don't think it's any type of bargain deal unless Knox takes another big step this season. Which is entirely possible but far from guaranteed.

I don’t really have a strong opinion on if Johnson could replace Poyer. What I do think is that the bills almost certainly can’t afford to bring Poyer back and if they’re looking for a cheap replacement, starting with the in-house backup is probably the route they go given the way they have behaved at CB. I do wish they would’ve drafted a day 2 Safety sometime in the last couple of seasons that they could’ve been slowly integrating, but alas we needed 3 DEs with 3 consecutive 1/2 round picks.

That would be a real awkward dance to do with Poyer before this season. Sign Johnson after the season if that is their preferred route. If Johnson chooses to walk, which I doubt in that scenario, there still would be other cheap options.

I generally agree that replacing from within might be the most economical way to do it (I'd personally be looking at MLB/S as well as OL as huge priority in the next couple of drafts as well). But I'd still expect a large downgrade in terms of play. Both guys are crucial pieces. If i had to choose one to keep - it would be Hyde - but ideally I'm finding any way possible to keep both.

This Knox extension is making it look more unlikely however.

Ultimately if the Bills believe Jaquan Johnson is ready to take over the spot, I'll defer to what they see every day in practice. Hard not to give this regime the benefit of the doubt, especially on the defensive side of the ball, and even more especially in the secondary.

Hyde and Poyer were relative unknowns when they first signed here too - Poyer had 6 career starts at safety over his 4 years in the NFL prior to coming to Buffalo, and Hyde played a ton of corner before coming here and wasn't even offered a deal by Green Bay when he became a free agent. Both were ranked in the 50's among safeties (by PFF) in the NFL before they got here.

One thing the Bills need to start demonstrating is an ability/comfort in letting guys go and replacing from within. Now that they're good and are paying a QB a ton of money it's going to become commonplace and their ability to do it successfully will dictate whether they're the Packers (good every year) or the Saints (wild ups and downs despite having a HOF QB). You can't pay every player you successfully develop, and thus far they've darn near tried to do just that.

We've seen this happen to a certain extent: Wallace, Hughes, Addison, Star, Sanders, and Beasley were all let go this offseason. Granted, they found some cheaper vets in FA to help fill some of those spots (Jones, Settle, Phillips, Crowder, Lawson) and the big fish in Miller, but we're seeing them really rely on guys like Rousseau, Gabe Davis, and Dane Jackson to fill some of those roles, not to mention a rookie in Elam. Now none of the guys they let go were quite at Jordan Poyer or Tremaine Edmunds level, so bigger tests are coming...

And Kelce's. TEs that operate as WR1s are going to start demanding being paid as such.
As i said above - the truly elite guys like Kelce/Waller will be worth whatever they get paid. It's the guys in the tiers below who probably won't.

OT - you guys agree with the sky-high expectations for the Bills? They seem to be the consensus SB favorite.
They're probably the deepest team in the league with one of the best QB's in the league and solid coaching. I can understand them being favorites, though it's crazy so many 'pundits' are on the band wagon.

That doesn't mean they'll win the Superbowl, obviously. There are a lot of good teams in the league. The AFC is especially stacked with really, really good QBs, and the Bills defense has struggled against good QBs. Hopefully the pass rush is greatly improved this year with the addition of Von, the beefing up of the middle of the line, and young players improving.

To the AFC being stacked point, someone I heard on the radio yesterday made a great point. The AFC is supposed to be crazy this year and all the “experts” are predicting Buffalo to come out of it and the NFC is supposed to have just a few teams that are expected to dominate and on one show alone there were five different teams picked to come out of the NFC but they all picked Buffalo from the AFC. Kind of crazy.

Good post, and it all comes down to drafting. If we are average at drafting over the next decade, we’ll be a good team every year. You have a crazy good draft or two? It sets you up for dominance once you already have a core in place

Yea I would give the bills the best chances of winning the Super Bowl…BUT the heavy odds are still they won’t.
