I could see them moving on from Milano to sign Edmunds. That wasn’t a nothing pick they threw away on Bernard
You could be right. It would then becone a question of weather that would be the correct move....

But tough decisions will need to be made. That's my point. We all knew this was coming as soon as Allen showed real promise & the 2017 draftees got their extensions.

Agree with this. I like that they are staying the course for the most part & rewarding their guys.

I won't like the contract when i see the numbers though.

I have no idea how Edmunds & Oliver fit without crippling the team somewhere else... Never mind Poyer as well.
I fully expect Oliver to get a massive contract.

Edmunds is just really hard to see fitting in cap wise

I expected that was the plan until they re-did Milanos contract to make it so they can’t get out of it and save money next year. And then they played Bernard exclusively at MLB all offseason…

1. The cap will go up exponentially because TV rights deals are insane and half that money goes to the players.

2. Edmunds hasn’t been extended because Edmunds hasn’t earned an extension yet and doesn’t play as premium a position anyway,

3. His tough decision won’t be made at the expense of his best defensive lineman. I promise you that.

4. Most of their roster is already under contract for next year already. Between what Oliver’s cap hit already is and restructures they’re going to do on Allen’s contract anyway…they could sign two Olivers next year. Mahomes restructured the first year his deal kicked in and they found a magical 17 something million in cap space that year alone.

5. This is a Super Bowl window. If you’re worrying about the can you’re kicking down the road you are doing it wrong. We will keep our best young players and people will say “on they’re going to be in so much trouble one day” and until that day they’re going to win a ton of games and have a legit chance of being the champions.

If anyone is worried about future cap right now they’re doing it wrong.
1. It doesn't go up exponentially. It increases - more so than the NHL for sure - but not to the level where teams can just sign whoever they want.

2. That's very debatable. MLB is an important position in this scheme - to the extent Beane felt the need to trade R1+R3 picks for Edmunds. I think Edmunds has failed to deliver on ALL of his promise - but he's an extremely useful player who is playing an important role on the team. I can guarantee you that he'd be extended by now if there were no cap constraints in place.

3. I never said that they would definately move on from Oliver. Try reading... I also think it's a stretch to call Oliver 'by far' their best DL given the huge investment in recent drafts/free agency.

4. Yes. But I'm looking further ahead than next year.

5. Allen is 26 - not 36. The window is open for as long as he's quarterbacking the team. It would be irresponsible to throw all your eggs in one basket to try to win in year 1-2 of a potential 10 year window at the expense of the other 8 years.

I guess Beane is also doing it wrong in your mind - since he brings up the importance of astute cap management in damn near every presser he holds...

I don't think they drafted Bernard as a replacement. I think his size, speed and coverage ability made him a luxury pick that they can trot out against teams with great tight ends. 3 of the top 5 tight ends play in the AFC and Gesicki/Henry twice a year.

Meh, I think knox is approaching that top 5 TE status and I disagree about his talent. I think his playmaking ability out of the TE position is very impressive.

See above.

You can’t even compare the two sports contracts as dollars. Tage will have every penny of his on the cap for every year of that deal unless they take a punishing buyout number.

in the NFL they’ll convert bonus money for Allen next year and poor theres over ten million dollars. the biggest difference between the two is the NHL has an unmoving cap where every dollar is real. The NFL has a consistently rising cap where most dollars are Not.
You really should try to be less patronising. Especially towards people who have been posting here 10+ years longer than you have.

I remind you again - it was YOU who bought up the TT / cross sport comparison.

I'm going to give you (virtual) kudos for this. I didn't believe having 'two Milanos' playing in a base nickel defence was something that was likely to happen, never mind be successful.

But this does look like it's a route they could go down - even though there is a long way to go.

He gets a free pass antagonizing and talking down to everyone here—no idea why, but that’s his style.

I’ll also point out this contract probably won’t be in the top 10 in 12 months for TEs when it comes to AAV

I think he’s pretty good. An above average starter. But he’s not in a tier with the truly elite TE talents - kelce, andrews, and Pitts - through whom you can funnel an offense as your #1 WR.

Totally, but i don’t think he is getting paid like one. I think his AAV is 6th (I’m probably wrong, I saw a tweet), and I think a handful of guys will pass this contract over the next year. Seems about right to me?

But I get it!

I’ll also add, when your QB is Allen…I’m 10000 percent on board on prioritizing contracts on offense at the risk of losing defensive players.

Though is there any doubt this front office is going to sign edmunds. Seems like a sure thing

I *assume* Ill like this deal. It's going to age well just like the Allen, Dawkins, and White deals. Beane likes to pay quickly before other teams sign similar players that set the market.

It seems like a good strategy in any sport = sign good young players early to long term contracts with the understanding contracts are always getting more expensive.

With the caveat you can’t get that “good” part wrong haha. Which, this team is due to get wrong soon

I'd need to see the numbers first.

I think there is some buyer's remorse out there on some of the recent bigger TE contracts. So while the do it all guys (Kittle, maybe Hockenson) or the truly elite receivers (Kelce, maybe Pitts) will earn the huge money - I'm not sure the guys in a tier below will.

That’s fair, it also seems pretty dependent on what the cap looks like in a few years…something I’m completely out of touch with

Seems like he'll be the 6th highest paid TE, which actually isnt that bad. I think he's a top-10 TE, so seems fair for both sides. His contract should age well as Im sure a few TEs will get paid more than him in the coming years.

I feel like if they had any concrete plans to extend Edmunds, they would have done so already. Beane obviously understands the value of getting extensions done early. But who am I to say? That's just my hope.

Unless he takes a massive step this year, I hope they move on. He is probably my least favorite player on the whole roster. Seems like a good guy, but absolutely frustrating to watch. He's fine in coverage, but does not have a nose for the football, cannot work through blocks, and provides almost no splash plays. Rare traits, but I'd rather have an average athlete with great instincts than a great athlete with terrible instincts.

I don't have a good feel of TE contracts, but I am glad Knox is signed. Beane has had some really odd and poor evaluations at that position. I will take some certainly.

I want Oliver back. I think the Bills would be wise to let Edmunds and Poyer go. Edmunds just is not good and I would prefer to get cheaper at the safety position.

For as much as everyone raves about Edmunds' athleticism, he gets bowled over by average size RBs on an absurdly regular basis and almost never reaches the QB on blitzes

When they drafted Bernard my first instinct was definitely that he would replace Milano after 2022 due to the out. But since they reworked Milanos deal and have played Bernard at MLB, I’m looking differently.

Agree. I don’t see other NFL teams game-planning for Knox the way they did/do Kelce, Kittle etc.
and I don’t see Knox as a threat in open field with the ball to run over and through defenders like the other 2, Gronk in his prime, etc.

I think he could do more of that, they just don't seem to run many plays where he gets the opportunity. Since Daboll arrived, TEs have been underutilized in that regard.

But who could forget this gem?
