Also... the Villalta rhetoric on here is... more than a little out of control.

I get that I'm an employee and that I have stated publicly my personal affinity for Matt is great but jesus you guys talk about him like the team missed the playoffs and he's the reason why.

You can be a terrific human being and a relatively sucky hockey player.

I'm not rooting against Villalta or anything but I've seen nothing in his progression that screams he has a future with the organization and his volatility is a problem, for every screaming highlight reel he saves he lets in two bloopers. That's not going to cut it at any pro level.

Yes, I stand by my assessment that if the Reign lose in the playoffs, he'll be why.

I think we all are rooting for Villalta and are hoping he does well. We just have no confidence that he will. I think most of us know if the Reign are going to advance it's not going to be on the back of 3-2 wins.

Yeah. I want Villalta to succeed, just like I want every Kings prospect to succeed. But the Kings do not feel set in goal, especially long term. Otherwise they wouldn't have scrambled to try and draft Wallstedt, they wouldn't have changed their minds and decided to sign Hrenak, etc.

Ok but there's an ocean of hockey analysis between the shores of "The Kings don't have a particularly deep goalie prospect pipeline" and "Matt Villalta is the reason the Reign will lose in the first round how can nobody see how terrible he is *frothing at the mouth*"

Oh come on, I've never had to say the boldfaced because that's clear as day to most.

We'll find out how wrong I am in a few short days I hope. I'll definitely be frothing at the mouth either way though.

Do you really do not want to acknowledge problem with Kings goalies?

Quick is great, but old and Peterson does not look like goalie of the future for Kings.

LA badly needs elite level prospects, because all current prospects are B level and not elite level for sure.

Villalta was given so many chances to succeed for Reign, but proved so many times that he is not capable to do it.

P.S. May be Lucas Parik is B+ level prospect

In fairness on the season review Jesse was clear in that Petersen had not yet achieved what we’d hoped in terms of claiming the no1 job. There was some reasonable assessment of the situation which was fair even if you don’t agree with it.

My personal take is that it’s perhaps gotten into Petersens head that he needs to be the guy, pressure from the new contract and the extra demands of a longer season. Perhaps his COVID bought affected him. I say that because he was better and more consistent last season and is not yet at the goaltender peak. He’s shown it at time this season but not consistently. He’s always been sound technically but at times he’s been a bit shaky there also. That all means I think there is much better to come from him.

As for Villalta, no I’m not a fan unfortunately. He is very inconsistent and let’s in back breaking goals at times however he wasn’t the one that failed to put the puck in the net during games one. It therefore very wasn’t all on him.

Look stats can only tell you so much but if you're on a favorite contender, 2nd in the division/3rd in the conference, and you can't even crack the top 31 goalies in any individual stat while being 3rd in the entire league with 28 wins...

I'll just say that matches what you can see when you watch him.

He's the opposite of Quick, Quick pulls out the big saves on Grade A chances when your team really needs them, Villalta leaks that goal to let the other team back into the game on a unscreened shot from the point.

To be fair, they are similar. They both make the games exciting, just in opposite ways.

Hey, I’m not saying that Villalta will have a Quick-like career, but let’s not forget all the Mr. Softie goals that Quickie let in early in his career.

Sure. All goalies let in softies.

At age 22-23, Quick was already an NHL starter.

Villalta turns 23 in June. And there's a chance he might not be the AHL starter next year.

The Kings could have used those seven goals tonight. Reign put on a show. More Fagemo and Thomas please.

How is Turcotte looking upon his return ? It would be a bitch missing that much time and having to step right into playoff mode.
