Kaliyev is a fourth line right wing this season. We all know it’s a bit of a waste but here we are. I hope a handful of guys get shots next season but who realistically leaves? I think about this a lot (I may need a new hobby…).
We technically have four UFAs: Brown, Athanasiou, Edler, and Maatta. Our only RFA of note cap-wise is Kempe, who will likely get a sizable raise.
If we assume none of the UFAs will be back (who knows at this point), we could see an opening night roster of:
Kempe - Kopitar - Kaliyev
Moore - Danault - Arvidsson
Iafallo - Byfield - Vilardi
Turcotte - Lizotte - Lemieux
I’m guessing one of our prospects gets the fourth line treatment next year and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Turcotte. I think Vilardi has gone down and done every single thing asked of him and hope to see him in our top nine next year. McLellan mentioned that Kaliyev needs to be in the top six next year. It’s hard to move a guy like Moore off the second line right now, but he very well could just be on a heck of a hot streak and start to cool. Worst case scenario I see him as a solid fourth-line guy. Moore, Lizotte, and Lemieux might be the best fourth line in the league. I dunno. Where do guys like Madden, Kupari, and Fagemo end up? So many pieces.
Defense gets even harder. Doughty isn’t going anywhere, Durzi is the best puckmover since pre-cup Drew, and guys like Spence, Clarke, and perhaps even Faber are going to make things reeeeally interesting for our coaching staff sooner than later. Faber is a standout every year at the biggest levels. Can’t wait for him to suit up for us. Can any of them play on the left side?
Faber - Doughty
Anderson - Clarke
Spence - Durzi
