Does he look big on the ice in person? I saw him once off ice and he towered over people.

Yeah, he’s a big kid. Height can be exaggerated, but he looks like a legit 6’4” or 6’5”. What’s frightening to me is that he’s not even remotely close to being done filling out, he looks like he has room to add on 15-20 pounds of muscle, in which case…

Friend of mine watched the game last night and said Byfield was flying out there and didn't look like he'd missed a few months. Hopefully he's back on the big club in a week or so.

Your friend would be correct from my viewing. It took him and his line about half a period to settle in, but after that, he completely controlled the play vs. the Tracey-O’Regan-Perreault line for San Diego. He was particularly impressive on the PK, where he was essentially a one-man band of disruption up high. Heck, I’d venture to guess that he generated more quality chances by himself shorthanded than all six Gulls power plays last night

Could someone provide some insight on Tkachev? How's he doing, where he sits on the depth chart, odds of getting called up etc...

Thanks :)

He's never seeing NHL ice in this org again.

Basically doing the same thing in the minors he was doing in the NHL--creativity, PP weapon, nails passes no one else even thinks to make, and is scoring at a PPG clip.

HOwever, the Kings don't know how to deploy anyone to their strengths, so he's probably like 10th in line between a bunch of prospects and, as we've seen, AHL Lifers, even though our PP needs an exorcism--'specialists' aren't allowed unless he suddenly becomes an all-hustle 200 ft checker.

Tf? Seriously? So he's good, but won't get a chance again cause GM is dumb

We wish we were joking, but all the evidence points to that being the way things are being run around here. Everybody on the roster must be a 200 foot two way board battling robot that has had all the offensive creativity beat out of them.

Damn. Ok thanks for the input guys. I'll keep my eye on him ;)

I think Tkachev gets a look again before long. To be fair, Kupari is up and he doesn't board battle at all. Arty is terrible at it, as is AA. Durzi is the opposite of that type of player as well.

Tkachev wasn't sent down because he wouldn't battle on the boards, he was sent down because he was playing terribly.

I wouldn't say he was doing those things in the NHL. His CF% at even strength was 30.6%, that's pretty terrible. His Relative CF% was -26.8, which is hard to describe. in 45 even-strength minutes he was on the ice for 19 shot attempts - one shot on goal on ice for every 3 shifts he took. 4 games or not, he was just plain bad. He had one shot on goal in 56 overall minutes.

In the AHL he looks similar to how he did in the preseason, but that's against AHL level competition and veterans just going through the motions and getting in shape. He was a complete liability and wasn't prepared once the real season started, if he overcomes that I think he warrants another shot.

Here comes the chicken-and-egg thing where we hold the first stretch of awful games against the guys who haven't been in a game since and use that to keep them out...

Me, I'm more inclined to believe that him, like Vilardi and Andersson, are more like the guys we've seen before and we've seen since then we saw in that stretch where literally the whole team was godawful.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not going hard to bat for Tkachev or anything, agree he's mostly a PP specialist that won't be doing a ton of 5v5 damage, but I do think him being a 'liability' is completely exaggerated, especially on a roster completely stocked with possession/defensive guys (if you can cover up for AA, you can cover up for anyone). He's just completely emblematic of this org's pisspoor asset management and dissonance of vision--go out and get an offensive dude, then act surprised pikachu when he's not a 200 foot checker, banish him to the 4th line, get surprised when he's not scoring OR checking, then banish him forever...rinse, repeat, go find another Russian.

I don't think the team is the best with player management, but I don't think Tkachev is a good example of that. In his 4 games, he played three with Vilardi and Kaliyev, and one with Vilardi and Moore. Those aren't 4th line minutes or assignments and he certainly wasn't asked to check anyone. His job is to generate offense and he simply couldn't do it. He looked overwhelmed to me.

I'm just going to say that Tkachev is 7th among Kings forwards in PPG, and he barely got a chance to get his feet wet. He looked dangerous on the PP, and the Kings DESPERATELY need help there

Yeah I think he could fill a niche, he just has to round out his game a bit. Coming over into NA and hopping into the western conference isn't easy, especially if you are undersized and not used to the smaller surface. He was definitely gun-shy out there, he's not used to that kind of physical pressure where you can't get away easily.

I think the biggest reason a lot of us are disappointed is that line was killing it in the pre-season then completely fell apart. If they could have stayed healthy and held it together, this team would be in a much different place. Vilardi and Tkachev looked absolutely terrible a week and a half after they were tearing it up, and Lias looks like a 7th OA bust. Vilardi and Tkachev do look to be getting things back, although I'm concerned a bit with how many goals are scored against while Gabe is on the ice. If he can get wing locked down I think he's going to be quite effective.
