Russia's last olympic hockey medal was Bronze in 2002, that could continue if they fail here.

The Finns remind me of the better days of Torts' hockey here in NY. Less skilled than the opposition, incredible hard forecheck, very opportunistic, very disciplined, playing low in their own end only allowing shots from the perimeter.

Finland simplifying the game at this point, getting pucks deep and clogging up the middle.

Kovalchuk continuing to act like a baby

As a whole, the Russians don't seem to be a resilient bunch. They have so much freakin' talent. It makes no sense that they would be struggling, unless the problem is between the ears.

I wonder of McD continues to play as he has if it gets him into the Norris talk discussion.

He should have already been in it, but he didn't have the notoriety

Just an awful showing from Ovie thus far.

I just got into work and only saw the last 10 min. Did Varlamov deserve to get yanked?

Loose defending by Russia more than poor goaltending, but I think they felt it would spark the team.

Unless your defensive game is on a whole different level from the other candidates, you need to finish around top 5 among defenseman in scoring.

His defensive game is on another level. You could make the argument he is the best defensive player in the league.

It's not clear he's the best defender in the league. If he was, then he'd be on "another level." And he's 21st among defenseman in points. The combination of the two holds him back from serious consideration.

The Norwegian commentators are saying Kovalchuck should have gotten a 2 min for hitting someone in the face with his stick. Are international rules different with regards to hitting someone on the followthrough of a pass/shot?

Yes they are.
