IMO that’s exactly what this trade is about. Fast has been just-ok for a while now, playing responsibly but not really doing anything to put a positive mark on the Canes side of the ledger. He will be due for a raise next year

Puljujarvi is a very similar player, likely to end up paid about the same, but 7 years younger. This is, IMO, very much about replacing Fast.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about forwards at ES, so Nurse, Barrie and Chiasson (PP) aren't applicable. I think Kane has done well with McDavid though.

Yeah mostly thinking linemates. So you've got Kane at 19pts in 24 games this year. Then from what I can find you've got Yamamoto, Maroon and Kassian topping out at around .5 ppg going back through the years. And Hyman this year at 69pts (nice) in 60 games.

Obviously the other guys still need skill and finishing ability unless McDavid is intentionally banking the puck in off them (which he may very well do I wouldn't doubt it). But I'm not going to freak out too much over folks not putting up points next to him.

Tampa was overpaying for the league-minimum contract. Carolina is underpaying for a $3M cap dump. That's the key difference, and a big reason why the market is very much inflated only for specific varieties of contracts.

While his production has been very disappointing during all of Woodcroft's time he's had some promising stretches in his NHL career so I hope he could get it going in that side as well. His most solid season was two years ago when his ES goals/60 was the 2nd best of the team with just McDavid ahead and goals/60 the 3rd best. Too bad it didn't work in the Oilers but I think your team was pretty much the best choice for him.
