Couple of thoughts from someone who attended the game last night:

- Thought we started really well, but even after we went up 2-0 I was waiting for a collapse. I think I’m something like 1-6 this year at Rogers. Just a ridiculously terrible home record, and the players will continue their platitudes about “wanting to make this a tough place to play in”. Yeah right. It hasn’t been a tough place to play in for the better part of 2 decades. I guess there is just something in the water that gives these guys brain damage when they step onto the ice.

- Defense clearly is the bane of our team right now. Felt sorry to see Skinner get pulled when I didn’t think he had much of a chance on most of the goals against. A typical Bouchebag penalty to give the Kraken momentum, then an immediate collapse with FOUR goals against in a single period. Just abysmal. And for some reason the Kraken were always able to get behind the last defender. I’ve had high hopes for Bouchard but he has been absolute junk this year. Terrible defensively and a no-show on the offensive side has made him pretty useless overall. It’s telling that I actually thought Broberg has started to carry that pairing

- Speaking of Broberg, he is starting to look better by my eye but we don’t have the time to wait to see what he’ll become. He needs to be dangled for a real upgrade now. In fact, we definitely still need 2 more top 4 defensemen to round out this group. How Holland doesn’t see this is baffling. Or maybe he does and he’s just too incompetent to do anything about it

- Just a frustrating, frustrating team. JP, Foegele, Yamamoto all useless. Even McLeod and Holloway have been disappointing. Janmark and Kostin have showed flashes but lack consistency. Continues to irk me that we don’t try Kostin in the top 6. FFS he was dropped to the fourth line last night with Ryan and the ghost of JP.

It seems like our entire team is just 4 top 6 players and a bunch of fourth line / waiver wire plugs, along with a coach who is badly wearing away his shine and an atrocious defense that makes our goaltending look even worse than it is.

Most teams have players that can step up when a top 6er goes down but our scouting is so ridiculously horrible that we still have 0 ability to identify players that can even be temporarily inserted into those roles. Just the softest group of losers that also somehow completely lack skill or finishing ability. Holland you’ve really achieved the impossible here. Imagine being able to inherit a player who puts up points that we haven’t seen since the turn of the century and you’re still struggling to make the playoffs as a f***ing wildcard team.

glad I slept thru this mess. Seen highlites, or should I say lowlites. Bouchard is a complete mess

Can you even risk trading the first at this point? It'd be so Oilers to just miss out on the playoffs somehow win the lottery and Columbus or Montreal walk away with him for the likes of f***ing Gavrikov/Edmundson.
new rules now for winning 1st OA

It’s on coaching to give players opportunities. Woodcroft plays each line exactly the same. Where’s the zone start push, soft parade, playing different lines with different styles, and of course the defensive system where nobody clears the crease, nobody rotates and nobody supports.

well I'll be an optimistic fella. I'm a Green Bay Packers fan and up till last week, they were written off. Now this Sunday beat Detroit and they are in

Man we miss Larsson

He was on or off year to year for us, but he is definitely having one of his "on" season for Seattle
He plays the right way 99% of the time. Unlike most of our guys including our leadership group.

Now hes got confidence and plays big minutes. 24 mins a night, +17, and 16 points to boot. Huge loss obviously.

Cant believe we could miss the playoffs this year on a historic season from McDavid, Let this be Hollands legacy.

Losing Klefbom and Larsson has resulted in the Oilers desperately trying to slap together a D core that is going to cost them a playoff spot this year.

Holland gambled and has lost, horrendously.

Ceci/Kulak cannot handle the minutes given. Nurse has arguably the worst contract in the NHL right now. Bouchard is..... bad. Barrie the only bright spot on the back end this year.

It's been about six seasons since Klefbom looked like an NHL player. Losing him shouldn't be a reason why they suck now.

Hiring a deadbeat GM is what's going to cost them a playoff spot.

This season is deja vu of the Oilers 2017-18

Went into the season as cup contenders, and hobbled out of the gate with shakey goaltending and non-existent defense, with several key depth players (needing to take a step forward) massively regressing.

McDavid won the Art Ross that year, but lost the Hart because we didn't make the playoffs.

Looking more and more likely that will happen again.

Geez, I just watched this game. Good Lord, it was a s***show.

Absolutely pathetic. Honestly, I've been behind the team up to now, not panicking and not overly worried about the lack of winning streaks and lack of home wins. But this game....???!!! Holy crap. This was embarrassing.

We're at the point where Bouchard, Kulak much of the time, and Broberg just cannot be trusted to play. With Tyson Barrie playing well and playing very well on the PP, Bouchard is actually expendable this season. He needs to be sent down and spend the rest of the season focusing on defensive smarts and intensity (forget the shot).

Anyway, the whole make-up of the club clearly isn't working well. We all knew going into the season that the Oilers had issues on defense, but it's getting to the point where they can't even beat Anaheim on home ice, they can't hold a 2-0 lead on home ice (in three of the past five games!), and players like Kulak and Bouchard are being asked to play minutes they clearly cannot handle.

Some personnel change is required.

Kane seems to be the difference between contending for the cup and contending to enter the playoffs.
Mike Smith, Duncan Keith, and a fresh coach were also factors.

So many juicy rebounds this game with bad positioning and bad sticks from our D core and centers.
iirc MTL just started 5 rookie D in a game, and arguably they played better!

tbh I was never a fan of the Keith signing, nor his footspeed on occasion... but he was a proper veteran, tough in the corners, demanding of his team-mates, and had a good stick.

Looking at the SEA 1st goal with 2 attackers "inside" of our D.
> Glaring issue is Nurse NOT in box formation. imo he should be completing the box somewhere between the 2 SEA forwards near to his corner of the crease
> He never regains proper position, and then shoves the attacking forward from behind into his own goalie (after the puck is already in) 🤦‍♂️
> Ceci abandons the net-front for a upright shot block, then lazily drifs off alone into the corner before realizing the goal went in 🤷‍♂️

There has been so much poo flung around on what is wrong with this club that I am actually expecting the

Full Tear Down vs Tweaking a Few Players Thread

to get rolling in the next 12-24 hours.

A shit show on so many levels.

Honestly I don't know how a team like ours can only put up two goals against arguably one of the worst starting goalies in the league.

It's no surprise to me that we allow 4 or 5 goals a game anymore, but to only put up 2 against Jones is embarrassing.

Expect a panic move and Holland to get absolutely hosed on the deal

Well on the bright side Campbell pitched a shutout in his 23 minutes.
He also faced like 3 shots in those 23 minutes.

Skinner was horrible. People continue to blame the D but are goaltending has been worse. Skinner has had some fantastic games but he is either lights out or the light stays on there is no inbetween. And we'll Campbell Campbell has been straight garbage since day 1.

That is still quite the feat lol

Although very sad that we don't allow any shots pretty much for a period and we can't get anything going offensively
