Post-Game Talk: Oilers play like an expansion team and lose.

Edmundson doesn't do shit for the team either. The team has prospects and draft picks as assets and needs to use them to get a real impact player such as Chychrun.
Or Gavrikov. If you can’t get either and you overpay for Edmunson or McCabe then good lord

Everybody wonders when he’ll actually make a f***ing move and trade for a dman to help this team. It’s like the highest paid GM in the league is just continuing to wait for the ship to sink further down instead of immediately fixing it.

I was at the game live, and the D looks as shittier than they do on TV. I try to give players like Broberg the benefit of the doubt, but he does nothing. Whiffing on a 3 on 2 and somehow dishing the puck right to a kraken player in the oilers own end made me wanna facepalm. How is he gonna be as good as Chychrun like what certain oiler organization workers think? There’s nothing about his game that speaks “Chychrun level” at all. Even my girlfriend isn’t quite knowledgeable about hockey yet, and yet she even said when Broberg was noticeable on ice tonight, it was when he looked terrible.

Fix the f***ing D already. Do your f***ing job, Holland.
At least you won’t be buying this gf an Oilers jersey like the last one that took it and ran off. :sarcasm:

But they don’t want Chychrun. They have members in the organization who think glass cannon Broberg will f***ing be as good as him one day. It’s astounding how out of touch with reality for any of the blowhards to think that. I’d take an old ass Duncan Keith over majority of this team’s defends right now. How Barrie who's more of a prime OFD has been better defensively than every other single Dman is just WTF

Old Duncan Keith would be a better defender than any of the D on this team they way they’ve been playing. Lol

Serious question ... is Broberg even as good as what Matt Benning was when he was here? lol. This is what we spent a top 10 pick on? Passed on Zegras and Caufield for this?

If you want the definition of matador defence (ie: covering air) Seattle's 3rd goal that put them up in the game is basically exactly that on textbook ghost defending by Broberg and Bouchard.

Yeah, yeah, yeah "in four years he might be good" ... whatever.

600k less expensive & has more games missed to injury = McCabe but Chychrun something something injury prone something something Broberg as good one day.

Yeah well, I unfortunately got her and her family into the oilers so I guess they’ll suffer with all of us too

Kane seems to be the difference between contending for the cup and contending to enter the playoffs.

He’s so f***ing bad. Bouchard was shit tonight too, but having a better partner who’s calm and defensively sound would help Bouchard. Broberg somehow whiffed from a 3 on 2, and passed directly to a kraken player in the oilers own end. I don’t see how this guy in any way is Chychrun-lite. Bust of a pick when players like Zegras or Boldy were available. Such a stupid holland pick. I’d rather see Nikita Nikitin out there

It would be so Ken Holland to continue to waste the season and a playoff spot waiting on Kane to return to the lineup. Kane won’t solve this horseshit D that looks like Dallas Eakins SWARM out there every night.

Those Cup winning Hawks teams had depth, though they did have holes, namely at centre, sometimes on D, and the first one with a mediocre goalie. But the team, top to bottom, showed up almost every game. The Gagner laugher was a nothing game and they actually didn’t give up multiple goal leads all the f***ing time like these country club losers

I was never embarrassed cheering for them (luckily I missed the Dollar Bill Wurtz era which would have made me embarrassed). I just don’t think this core has it, sadly.

Don’t take this as a defense of Woody, just an observation.

Woody was here when TMac got fired. He knows exactly how TMac lost the room, and it probably involved pushing and/or criticizing the players. He doesn’t want that to happen to himself, so he’s overcompensating in the other direction.

Unfortunately, these players don’t do well just freelancing without criticism.

What we have here is a giant clusterf***.
What I heard from a person with some informal association with the team was that Chiarelli and McLellan's relationship had become increasingly frayed during their time working together. There were differences over personnel which don't take a rocket scientist to figure out. And that the deteriorating relationship was worse than what it appeared. Not earth shattering stuff.

Chiarelli punted McLellan as Stage 1 of Operation Job Save; which sadly devolved into Stage 2 Panic Trades which ultimately hollowed out critical team depth.

I don't perceive Woodcroft to be over compensating. I actually think it is his nature to have a positive mindset and is not going to throw anyone under the bus publicly or be hyper critical or negative in a public forum with media. Any coach who does this in a hyper intense one horse town becomes dead man walking. He is weaned on modern process talk and his talking points are to fallback on banality that team breakdowns being bad decisions or getting away from their structure.

It was a huge leap of faith to lockdown a rookie coach tied to a Final Four playoff run after a Lazarus rise from the dead stretch drive to get into the playoff. Harsh reality is there were significant variables that all contributed to the team resetting from its prolonged slump. But there was no way Woodcroft could be bypassed for the HC job. He got it and now is riding the demon of every other Oilers coach that has endured systemic issues we see reoccur reoccur reoccur.

There are significant roster issues for this team. Defense is nowhere near NHL Cup contender level. Support scoring depth is suspect with RW an absolute graveyard and overpayment on ineffective support players. This is largely a GM issue but Woodcroft really hasn't done enough to win games. Tough assignment for a rookie coach...

Puljujarvi-Yamamoto-Broberg-Bouchard (defensively)-Holloway are so f***ing brutal and mentally fragile it's just almost comedy at this point.

These guys have done f*** all for the entire year outside of like 4 games total and this org bet heavily on all of them having solid seasons.

A complete master class in how to fail at the draft by the Oilers, betting the farm on these players thinking they are difference makers, yikes.

You could sign Gagner, Chiasson, Benning, Caggiula for peanuts and they likely would be better than this shit group of "up and coming Oilers top picks!".

Vrana who’s on waivers would outplay Pul/yam any single day, but we won’t get him. The dumb ass GM who’s paid 5M a year will be asleep while another team will luckily get Vrana

2 first pairing dman on contracts that are illegal

3 of those names are f***ing rookies.

With the quality of drafting and player development in this organization 1st round picks should be trade fodder. Would be damn nice if JP, Yamamoto, Broberg, Bouchard could actually contribute at this point. Or Benson. Bunch of f***ing failure after failure.

Would they be able to claim him? I thought you need the cap space first. Idk

3 of those names are f***ing rookies.

They were legal at the time, who gives a shit lol. Seabrook had many Nurse moments as well. He wasn’t exactly a godly top pairing D. Even with the forever contracts they had holes on the second pair on down and almost never had 4 decent centremen.

The difference is they had depth elsewhere, sure, but their top guys carried mediocre players and played a 200 ft game. This is a f***ing country club and it has been outside of the 2016-2017 run.

I bet Drake Caggiula would outperform Yams and Puljujarvi and Holloway at this point and might even play better defence than Bouchard, lol. Is that dude even in the league any more?

We're getting killed by garbage performance from this large chunk of our roster and massive commitment in draft capital that could have been spent on getting actual NHL players that would actually help McDavid and Draisaitl.

The point is having 2 stud dman signed years before you draft two stud forwards......

Of course we’d need the cap space first, but that requires having a GM to be creative. You’d think Holland would considering he’s the highest paid GM in the f***ing league. Send him back to Detroit.

Yeah ... and ... they suck for rookies.

I'd take a rookie Caggiula over Holloway right now. No offence to him, he seems like a nice kid, but this ain't f***ing pre-school. This is the NHL, you better be ready to play at this level if your name is called.

Matt Benning was a rookie for the Oilers in 16-17 ... he's a better player than what Philip Broberg is right now several years post-draft.

This is just getting sad, we seriously passed on Zegras and Caufield and Boldy for this shit.

It’s Year 8 of McDavid and Draisaitl. The team had ~$24M in cap-space in 2021. They're currently two points behind last season's expansion team with 3 GP in hand.
McDavid is nearly producing at a 70G and 155P point pace, and the team ranks 21st in the league in 5v5 goals/60.

And then a defence that still won’t be fixed to this day.

f*** you, Ken Holland

The only reason they’re looking to trade Chychrun is because he asked for a trade - i.e. he won’t re-sign there at the end of his current contract.

Bouchard shouldn’t have that issue.

Parayko actually plays pretty soft for a big defender. He’s Nurse on a better contract.
It's the chicken or the egg at this point, it's dragged on so long. My recollection is the team initially indicated it would like to move Chychrun way way back. Regardless, the player is obviously onboard to be moved with the way in which it is being operated. But the plan under a GM who made his bones as an amateur scout in a solid organization is to stockpile volumes of high picks and build a quality pipeline timed for a new building.

Parayko doesn't have to put players through the boards. Just bring a solid, goal suppression game that can stabilize the wild pony in Nurse. Ideally help Nurse to get back more to the harder, physical game that first defined him as a solid NHL defender.
