YWG -> YXY -> YEG
McDavid lacks leadership. He’s a point machine but does NOTHING to improve those around him. In fact, present day evidence points towards him actually having a negative effect on the team. The best thing Oilers could do is trade McD, but their fans and leadership are of course too short sighted to see this.

I'm not in the room so obviously I have no idea how good a leader he is off the ice, but the idea that on the ice that McDavid does nothing to make those around him better is a really bad take, and you should feel bad for making it.

He was good with Kings and Leafs.Solid save percentages

And I think most teams know Edmonton is a place where goalies just don't get much support. So he could get back to.a good place.

It terms of Bakersfield, culture permeates throughout the organization
How is it both goalies in Bakersfield have well over. 900 save percentages and Campbell a so called 5 million dollar NHL starting goalie gets lit up his first game is said league?

I can't get the image of Seattle right now...

Tipp, Ebs, Larsson, Yam, Schultz all just laughing their asses off.

JP on his Xbox also laughing his ass off.

Koskinen in the NLA (who put up considerably better numbers) is probably pissed!

Smith and Duncan cracking a cold one also laughing their asses off.

It’s only 3-0 who cares
It’s wild how good the Canucks amateur and pro scouting has been under new management and that department is managed by Cammi Granato. Maybe it’s time for the era of the New Girls Club instead.

Yeah I’m happy for the Canucks. I lived in Seattle for a while and kinda root for them somewhat but don’t mind the Canucks. I use to love going up to Vancouver all the time.

Countless players have had career years playing with McDavid but he does nothing to improve his teammates. Make it make sense.
When they aren’t on the ice with him picking up neutral zone assists they immediately regress to their norm. Unlike true leaders like Crosby who have lasting positive impacts on those he spends time on ice with.

It's math those teams all play each other always 2 points award sometimes 3 among that bunch.

A couple of those teams will get in the 90's in terms of points

To make the playoffs Oilers have to go 18-20 games over .500.

But the overriding reason why the Oilers won't make playoffs is I don't think they they can replicate their powerplay percentage from last year. It was lethal and hid all kinds of warts.

Now if they get back to that 30 percent level I will believe they will finish the year 20 games over .500 and get in.

100% agree with the arguments in your post, but not really the conclusion.

I agree absolutely no way Edm gets back to their historically good PP last season. That PP was unsustainably good, probably every coach in the NHL spent dozens of hours or more in the offseason trying to figure out how to shut it down. I expect the PP% to decrease from historical numbers to maybe 25% -- so still league best but not historical.

The actual problem though is the warts -- from what little I've seen on TV, their d-coverage is bad in their own zone. Like, really bad. A new coach (and time with a new system) should fix that. And based on how they're going, seems likely they'll get a new coach sometime this year and any reasonable person would hire a new coach who'd be good defensively, meaning he should be able to fix those warts.

So to me it's like... can they fix their D-zone coverage? Probably. Can they do it in time? Not sure.

Personally I think the odds of their making playoffs is still above 50%, at some point I think it'll click, when it does I expect this team to go on average about 6-3-1 for every ten games, which may or may not be enough. We'll all be seeing this in real time

Couldn't happen to a more deserving fan base. With all the countless threads about other teams and players derailed by trolling Oilers fans makes this place borderline unreadable at times.

They officially have ZERO ground to stand on in terms of slagging other teams.

I’m honestly not sure Oilers fans actually care about how their team does. They just like to have massive HFBoards circle jerks about how they have “the two best players in the world” and make ridiculous threads/posts about how McDavid is supposedly worth the core of a championship team all by himself. And when McDrai walk they won’t even have that - it’s almost enough to make me feel sorry for them…almost.

Ah yes the 1 game sample size after just getting sent down

Why is it he was so much better in Toronto and LA where he played multiple games?

Meh. Every fanbase has their share of those type of fans. Especially the Canadian ones.

Didn't Edmonton hire McDavid's agent in some sort of capacity? I can't wait for that conversation to happen.

I don't get the feeling he's going to care about market size, he wants the damn Cup. He's going to go to a team with a strong defensive foundation where him coming up vaults them all the way over the top. And I don't mean a team with a strong offensive punch from the blue line, I'm talking a team that knows how to keep the puck out of their own net.

Carolina
Buffalo
Boston
Tampa

Those are a few I can think of right off the bat where him coming in would immediately push them over the top

The Lightning expect their forwards to care about both nets, not just one.

MacKenzie Blackwood was just arrested in San Jose for theft.

This is all happening because I got McDavid (who?) on my fantasy team.

Lemieux played through cancer and couldn’t even tie his skates yet was still a better player. Gretzky took a cross check from Sutter that injured him good for life. What’s McDavid’s excuse? If he’s so injured, he shouldn’t be playing - not like he’s doing anything out there anyways .
Yea he shouldn’t be playing, but Edmonton is desperate and we’ve all seen how pathetic they are without him.

Are we really going to say someone isn’t actually amazing 12 games after putting up the greates non Gretzky/Lemieux season ever seen? Lol.

So in other words, they play better when they're on the ice with him. Yup, that's definitely not improving your teammates.
