Oilers have 85% of the regular season remaining. Eighty f***ing five! No reason to panic yet but the coaching staff and management have to get McDrai energized to carry the team. That's the real risk - not the record but that McDrai can't or won't do it anymore.

Well yea, but each loss just means they have to play that much hotter the rest of the way in order to qualify for the playoffs. Time is ticking.

People tagging on McDavid aren't watching the games. They should be tagging on Draisaitl.

McDavid is trying to carry the team but Draisaitl is out there sulking every game. Drai has immense talent but he'd almost be better without McDavid in the lineup so it forces him to step up because he's just going through the motions. Absolutely zero leadership from Drai this year.

Didn't they change to a new defensive structure this year? Maybe its not working....... time to switch back?

Unfortunately the NHL isn't like the NBA you can't get two of the best and have a top team. You need depth and skill throughout your lineup. In the playoffs you need to roll 4 lines if you want to go deep. The Oilers have assembled a poor team despite have two great players.

It's not even just that though.

Holland has been a complete disaster for them. Signing Nurse to 9M/6yrs was a boat anchor before the ink even dried. Campbell was well known to have a lot of confidence issues. Granted, nobody predicted this big a fall from grace so quickly but 5x5 didn't make any sense.

They also had a huge opportunity to sell high on RNH. Or rather, they would have if Holland didn't giving him a NMC.

That right there could help their depth or open up the possibility of getting an elite goaltending they could actually afford. There's just so many bad decisions all around that now they're forced to trade Draisaitl.

Problem is, if they do, will McDavid want to wait around and see if this time something actually works?

There's some ridiculous percentage of teams that sit in a playoff spot by American Thanksgiving will be the playoff teams when the season ends.

Oilers have the worst D in the league. When Nurse-Cici are your top pairing and getting paid a combined 13M you are doomed.

Bouchard is also a terrible dman defensively who will command a high salary when his bridge is up due to offensive production on PP. he is poised to overtake Nurse as worst contract.

With the style of play, Oilers need a superstar goalie to hold the fort. They have completely destroyed Campbell’s NHl future. No GM will trade for him.

If we use last season has a benchmark, it took 95 points to qualify for the West. Which means Edmonton now needs to win 45 of the remaining 68 games or 66% just to barely squeak in. Yes, they can get some OT loser points but you get the idea.

Is it possible? Sure. The likelihood is pretty damn slim considering how horrendous they've been.

Its 12 games. They can still turn their season around.

12 games is 15% of the season, that’s not insignificant. I’ve watched the Canucks miss the post season for so many years because they couldn’t figure out how to play hockey in October and November.

The teams above them aren’t going to stop winning either, they will need to go on a massive heater to catch up and in all honesty I don’t think they’re built or playing well enough to expect that.

It's one of the greater disparities between expectations and reality on the ice, sure. Yet the floundering years after their first rebuild attempt were far worse.

Then, there were only vague expectations and hope for improvement each year. Now, many foolishly called them one of the two/three Cup favorites in camp. So the expectations/reality gap is greater today, even if that floundering team was objectively worse than this one.

They were never a complete enough team, with enough personnel or commitment to solid team defense, or goaltending, to warrant Cup-or-bust expectations. Yet they certainly should have been a 100-point team. To be in the cellar is surprising.

I feel like a poorly managed NBA team with two superstars would also not win championships.

They're one of the streakiest teams in the league and could still make the playoffs if they go on one of their insane runs mid-season. But the clock is most certainly ticking and management will have to get creative to clear some cap space. A coach also needs to get Drai to commit to even a 100 foot game, as it stands now he has no interest in anything in his own half of the ice
