Or maybe they just have incompetent management?

Nah, it's the league's fault once again.
They do have dumb GMs. It didn't take Canucks GM 20 years to fix that defense and they had bad contracts in OEL Pearson, Myers etc. It only took 2 years to buyout and trade some of the deadweights and bad contracts while adding Hronek, Soucy, Cole and Friedman to that D which previously had Schenn, OEL, Boroughs, Dermott etc. on it. The Oilers just as easily could have got rid of some of their bad players on D and bought out Nurse as painful as it would be or maybe just kept him like Myers until a favourable buyout later down the road.

They’re built to play exciting hockey. Unfortunately exciting hockey doesn’t always work.

Sometimes you need to win 1-0 and that requires structure and a full team effort.

Theyre the Harlem Globetrotters

This take is a year old.

They aren’t even exciting or high scoring any more. McDavid isn’t himself, Draisatl looks even lazier defensively, RNH is an absolute ghost, Kane is diminished and guys like Foegele, Brown, Janmark etc are playing major roles on “scoring lines”.

They are a lot closer to the Washington Generals than the Harlem Globetrotters at the moment. Yes they are 31 out of 32 in goal allowed but they are also 26th in scoring. When your basically at or near bottom five in offense and defense - this is what you get.

The defense needs remedial training, a goalie change won’t do anything, there isn’t a goalie in the world capable of playing reasonably behind the chaos that is Oiler decision making.

Two Oiler defensemen last night made egregious level plays that wouldn’t fly at the peewee level. Each blindly turned and threw a puck up the middle of the ice from their defensive end. They managed to hit their own players in the shin and midsection respectively, Bouchard nearly had an own shot against because of this. Use your eyes, use the boards! Going up the gut blind is pure lunacy.

That and after the kick in wave off goal, they gave up a 3 on 1 into a lone breakaway tip from the slot within 10 seconds of the neutral zone face off. This is absurd, how can you possibly have multiple people out of position immediately after a draw, this is all solved time, these are professionals, if you can’t plan out and mitigate mistakes 10 seconds from the draw you are going to get destroyed.

Yea I've been beating that drum, with two high end guys every year is go for it time. You can't flip a coin on guys like Holloway and Broberg who may or may not pan out years down the road. Most of the time first round picks are at its highest value before they're made. Should have been parlaying those into talent that can help now - and if they work out sign them for longer. They just completely botched it.
Finally someone that gets it. Tired of hearing from most HFboard members how 1st round picks are the gold tickets that should not be traded for anything. Especially last year when Canucks traded a 1st and 2nd for Hronek and everyone on this board was crying about it, calling it a bad trade lol. Same thing with the Miller trade. Sometimes it's best to trade a 1st to get that star player versus waiting for it to turn into a Jake Virtanen, or a Juolevi. Again if the 1st round pick is used to get a good young player, then it should be done in a heartbeat unless that 1st round pick is in the top 10. Don't know what the Oilers are doing

You know something is seriously wrong with any team that makes Quinn Hughes look like the second coming of Bobby Orr.

And McDavid now needs to average 2 points a game the rest of the way in order to match last seasons totals.

McDavid crushed his previous best season by 30 points (20g / 10a). Anyone thinking he's going to consistently put up 150 points is probably going to be disappointed.

A lot of oilers had career highs in point totals last season, but their goaltending and defense isn't going to win them a lot of games. Take away the career years that some of those guys had, and if McDavid and drai are slumping, they aren't going to win a lot of games.

what did they do in the off season?

did they really only add connor brown?? sheesh

lol salt
No they also lost Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Kostin, Bjugstad in their forward core, then added Connor Brown, then claimed this is the best depth they’ve ever had. None of those 4 were world beaters, but they currently have 5 goals on the season from forwards not named McDavid, Drai, RNH, Hyman, and Kane. Two of those were scored by Gagner in the same game, and the other 3 came from Foegele playing with those aforementioned 5 players. After their top 6 scorers, the Oilers have gotten a combined 5 points from the other 8 forwards that have skated on their roster this year.

Granted I don’t know how well you can expect them to do when Woodcroft has mind boggling player usage. Against Vancouver, Oiler’s had a whopping 6 forwards play under 12 minutes of ice time last night.

Why do people keep forgetting that this is a trash team with 2 PP merchants that can't play defence?

Serious question. Chiarelli did a few good things like locking up Draisaitl and drafting Bouchard. The Lucic and Koskinen contracts were brutal but Holland has probably outdone that with the Campbell and Nurse deals. He also doesn't have any impactful NHLers to show for his drafting, although it's possible some of them pan out. I liked the Ekholm trade and the Kane/Hyman contracts. This isn't just do to their poor start, I felt this way last season.

I don't know if he's "hurt" them more, but his performance relative to expectations and the roster he was gifted is significantly worse. He's truly one of the league's worst GMs.

No question. Look at their roster and the next several years. They will have in their mid 30's

Campbell
Kane
Ekholm
Hyman
Nurse

So much cap tied up in players who won't be worth their cap hits. Drai will get a 7-8M raise, McDavid at least 4M.

Their window is firmly shut. Oilers wasted McDavid's prime with Chia and Holland as their GM.

They will fire the coach and go on a run like the St. Louis Blues

Except one major difference, the oilers don't have a Jordan Binington on the farm. Or any goalie close to him from his rookie year.

Ken's got to work the phones to try to get a goalie for under 2.5M, they are out there. Dan vladar is only a 3 hour drive away. Varlamov I'm sure can be had for the right price. Ken just needs to pay their asking price and get it done.
